i know we played well last world cup and made it past the group stage but i think its just a bonus if we ever do that again making the world cup will always be an achievement for australia. thats one of the reasons i think we wont get the world cup bid. cause we not promised to make it every time.

Being in Asia now and being able to qualify for World Cup through 'easier' groups over 10 games rather than one-off playoffs, Australia should be able to qualify for most World Cups from now on. 2014 might be difficult though given the so-called golden generation will be gone (this 2010 WC is their last hoorah) and we don't appear to have the obvious talent to replace them. Get a tough Asian qualification group with Korea, Japan and Iran and it's no certainty.

Let's hope he gets the monkey off the back either tonight against the Kiwis or at least against Denmark or USA before the WC. For us to pull off a miracle and get through our group we need others to score so we aren't just relying on the brilliance of Timmy Cahill.

Shocking first half and deservedly so 1-0 down.

McDonald hardly troubling anybody but to be fair the service is deplorable. Kiwis making some good chances.

Cahill replaced at half time and it looks like more of the same crap so far in the second.

On this effort we will not trouble the scorers in South Africa.

NZ has more motivation tonight. They're trying to justify their place in the WC and not be seen as easybeats. There's nothing for most of the Socceroos to play for.

And we've just equalised through Vidosic. One-all  :thumbsup

16 Socceroo games and no goals still for McDonald  :-\

Edit: 55k were there tonight. A great crowd for a Monday night against NZ.

Just found here's where you can watch it if you don't have foxtel

Very disjointed effort by the Socceroos . Sure they have some ins to come back but the positivity that was being felt four years ago is virtually non existant right now. I think with Verbeek, the players knowing he won't be there after the WC is really creating an atmosphere where both players and coach are just going through the motions and unmotivated atm.

Agree about us being disjointed Tucky. I know we had big names out but we'll be lucky to get a point in the WC based on tonight. Only confirms to me we have a major problem in the centre of our defence.

Our so-called A-team seemed disinterested. NZ aren't a big deal for us to play anymore unlike the 80s. We did better in the second half with our B-team who were fighting for spots in the final squad of 23. Lucky it was friendly and the ref went soft on some of our tackles.

im not a great fan of Verbeek anyways but hopefully tonight is the lowest level we'll be playing at we need to lift alot more before we play germany other wise they could be putting on a clinic against us.

Don't worry about Germany Serbia will win the group. Aussies will struggle even if they lift their game.
Germany and Serbia will qualify easily for the second round, forget about the comparisons from 2006. I'll be very surprised if the Aussies get through.
