Well who wouldve thought the Stkilda of world soccer Would win the world cup.
They deserved the win.

Holland played rough. They had no skill so had to resort to dirty tactics.

Now wake me up in another 4 years I care little for this sport.

German Holger Osieck is the new Socceroos coach.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/soccer/german-in-line-to-coach-socceroos/story-e6frfg8x-1225903938743

The 61-year-old arrived in Ljubljana just 24 hours before Australia’s friendly with Slovenia and will be unveiled just hours before kick off.

He will take charge of the Socceroos straight after tonight’s friendly against Slovenia, with the next match scheduled for September 3 away to Switzerland.

Osieck only senior international experience came while coaching Canada’s national team between 1999-2003, while he served as Franz Beckenbauer’s assistant when Germany won the 1990 World Cup.

Osieck, who served on FIFA’s Technical Study Group Committee at the 2010 World Cup, has hugely impressed FFA’s five-man selection panel during interviews.

Osieck most famously led Canada to the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, upsetting the likes of Colombia, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago on their way to the final.

He is familiar to Australian crowds from his stint with J-League side Urawa Red Diamonds.

Urawa, which was Osieck’s last coaching job, faced Sydney FC in the 2007 Asian Champions League group stage in the season that they won the prestigious trophy.

His Asian experience weighed hugely in his favour with FFA about to compete in the 2011 Asian Cup, while he had a long stint as youth coach of the German FA.

After a brief playing career in Germany and Canada, Osieck completed a degree in humanities and social science before acquiring his coaching licenses.

He obtained the highest available coaching qualification at the German Sport University Cologne in 1976 before joining Canada’s national team as assistant coach.

Thereafter he joined the German FA as a youth coach before joining French side Mbehindille as assistant, prior to taking charge of Bochum (Germany), Fenerbahce (Turkey), Urawa and then Kocaelispor (Turkey).

Osieck’s CV

1977-1979: Assistant coach of the Canadian national team

1979-1990: Youth coach at the German Football Federation and assistant coach of the German national team

1990-1991: Assistant coach of Olympique Marseille

1991-1992: VfL Bochum

1993-1994: Fenerbahçe Istanbul

1995-1996: Urawa Red Diamonds

1997-1998: Kocaelispor

1998-2003: National team Canada

2007-2008: Urawa Red Diamonds

Not a PR appointment to get Soccer in the news that's for sure. Hopefully with his background it's more like a modern AFL coach appointment where his background and abilities are suited to where the Socceroos are at with the need for us to rebuild the side after so many retirements over the past 4 years.

Errr... NO I don't think so

He was 2IC under Pim Verbeek but has now got a gig at one of the A-League teams - Newcastle or Central Coast or something

Personally care factor = 0

The World Cup was boring, the A-League is boring, this announcement is boring  :sleep :sleep

Heard on the radio yesterday that his appointment is as much to do with his experience in youth development as that will be a large part of his job.

Well done to Robbie Kruse :clapping

Looks like Ersan Gulum has chosen to play for Turkey given he's been left out of the squad.

Yep Timmy Cahill wouldn't even get a trial game for South Melbourne against the Springvale White Eagles. He's missing out big time on all the VPL middle table action :rollin.

Australia has got the official go ahead to host the Asian Cup in 2015.

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/australia-formally-awarded-the-2015-asian-cup-hosting-rights-20110105-19geg.html

No clash with the other football codes to worry about either as the tournament will be held in January and only 5 stadia at the most on the eastern seaboard will host games....

Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are the only three cities guaranteed to host, though Canberra's Bruce Stadium and Gold Coast's Skilled Park are also in the running. It is expected that five stadiums will be used to host the 16-team event, in which the nations are split into four groups, with the top two from each advancing to the knockout phase. As host, Australia will automatically qualify for what will be its third Asian Cup since joining the confederation in 2006.

Melbourne gets to host the 2015 opening ceremony and opening game while Sydney gets the final. No surprise there thanks to the FFA  ::).

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/melbourne-to-host-asian-cup-opener-20110106-19gpc.html

As for the Asian Cup coming up now hopefully the Socceroos blew away the cobwebs and acclimatised to the conditions against UAE overnight. Not acclimatising  really stuffed up our 2007 Asian Cup campaign in south-east asia.
