1973 version: Commentator: 'Yeah, I think it's a free kick' .

2023 version: Straight to tribunal and 4 weeks suspension; media outraged demanding 6 weeks because it's a Richmond player; Sam McClure sooks that Royce Hart shouldn't be at Richmond and will play for the Swans the following year.

The Southby one, in colour and from that angle, looks even more brutal than the old B&W Ch7 footage. You would be rightly rubbed out for a whole season if you did what Balmey did now. That was thuggery. As much as I hate Carlton, Southby was a ball player. I've always wondered if Balmey glimpsed the "0" on the back of the jumper and mistook Southby (#20) for Waite (#30) who was also behind him in the initial contest just before the incident. Waite would dish it out and targeted our smaller players like Sheedy earlier in that game. Balmey's second incident was part of getting back at Waite. Waite wasn't concussed so Balmey would probably only get a couple even under the current system (i.e. Kosi Pickett).

The sadist in me can't help but chuckle a bit, probably at the absurdity of it.

And the commentary 'oh that should be a free kick' when Southby is on the ground like a fish out of water and Waite is trying to pull him to his feet, no concussion protocol etc it's laughable

When you watch the ’73 GF you’ve got to consider context.

In 1972 we were absolute favourites to beat the Cheats but because that’s the only way they win premierships and those arrogant bastards wouldn’t let us forget it all season. Our players were seething for revenge.

Hafey had our players primed and pumped and nothing was going to stop us getting vengeance for the debarcle of ‘72 and the humiliation of losing to that Cheating scum.

They deserved everything they got that game and it looks even better in colour.  :clapping :clapping

I watched the Balme video about 100 times already  :clapping :gotigers

From Rhett Bartlett on twitter ...

Unseen for 50 years, until tonight.

The siren sounds
Richmond win the 1973 flag in colour!
Hafey immediately signs an autograph
There's Allan Cooke, Jack Titus, Col Saddington, GR, Charlie Callander

And the players lift Hafey onto their shoulders.
It is glorious. I'm speechless

I love the victory lap celebration, particularly as it was tradition for some to swap jumpers, and not 1 Richmond player had done this with the cheats.

All Yellow & Black.
