McQualter's post-match presser

Mini post-game:

* Happy with our persistence. Our first 1.5 quarters was ordinary. However, we got our pressure and clearance game going by the second half.

* They're a proud group. They were disappointed with last week. Pleased with the response.

* Young has come a long way from when he started in the VFL. We've given him big roles this year and he's stood up. Went onto Buddy and Mini said he was really proud of Tylar.

* We spoke about the challenges we've had in recent years with close finishes. We've worked on it and pleased with our senior players particularly standing up and getting us across the line.

* Really pleased with Rossy. He was stiff to go out and be the sub. He's worked on the stuff we've spoken about and he got his reward tonight.

* A shame about Bauer. Not sure yet how long he will be out.

* Not sure about the significance of the list soft tissue injuries. Every club goes through them.

* Banks stood up in his moment (stopping Buddy kicking a goal). Moments like that give energy to the whole team.

* We wouldn't change Nank. Had a great game especially in the 2nd half. Lead the way as captain. Whatever happens (with regard to the MRO/Tribunal) happens.

* Vlastuin got lost :snidegrin. Nah seriously, Sydney has put Mills behind the ball before and hurt us, so we moved Floss forward onto him.

Richmond interim coach Andrew McQualter called the first quarter-and-a-half "pretty ordinary", but was thrilled with the turnaround after being thumped by Brisbane last week.

"Probably after the 15-minute mark of the second quarter, I thought we were really able to get the game on our terms and the second half, we were able to build our pressure game and own some territory," he said.

"They're a proud group, our players, and last week was disappointing. We started a little disappointing tonight, but to be able to fight through that shows great leadership from our playing group, and that was most pleasing tonight.

"We've obviously had some challenges late in games over the past couple of years, so we've put a fair bit of work into that space. Ultimately – and I've said this before – it's about leaders and people standing up in the final moments."

McQualter was non-committal about Nankervis' report and praised the influence of his co-captain, who had 32 hitouts, 18 disposals and a goal.

"That's been Toby's greatest strength for a long period of time, his ability to get after the ball and the opposition," McQualter said.

"Whatever comes of it comes, but we wouldn't change Toby for the world."
