Rate a Tiger's year - Tylar Young?
« on: September 19, 2023, 09:45:39 PM »
Next up is Young.

Tylar in his first year of AFL played 19 out of a possible 23 games after being selected at pick 26 in last year's Rookie Draft held at the end of November. Due to what turned out to be season ending injuries to tall defenders Tarrant and Gibcus, Young debuted early on in the year in Round 2 against the Crows at Adelaide Oval. A leg injury in Round 7 saw Tylar miss three matches before he returned in Round 11 against Port Adelaide and played in all the remaining games of the season.

Gave him a 6 but with a belief that he can do better from here on.  He was thrown into the fire early in the year but came out of it pretty well.  His numbers aren't great but he made it hard for his opponent to score, like real defenders do.
He's no star, but his concentration & application are right up there & that's something you want your whole back 6 doing.
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!  Loud, proud & dangerous!

Gave him a 6.

His improvement in thec2nd half of the season was outstanding.

His start was poor, where he cost us when he gave the opposition some very soft goals

Will put my hand up and say I was one his harshest critics but kudos to the bloke by season end he was easy best 22 as a key back

Something to build on. He was a nice bonus in a crappy year.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Gave him a 7 because my expectations were low.

Started poor and ended very solid.

Not sure what else we can ask of a bloke taken so cheaply with such little experience.

Hopefully he improves and 2024 is as good as his last month or so

+1 on this as well. Greatly exceeded expectations and did a lot of things which makes you optimistic about 2024

atm i would call him a glass half full type. Not enough strings to his his kpd bow.
On him being asked to do a singular job this year he did well but i have to say there has to be just a bit more to a player than just being able to spoil in the modern game.

Who knows he may keep improving but im not going to hold my breath in expectation that he will significantly improve.
Hope the bloke proves me wrong.

I must admit the knocks on Young I find extraordinary.

He's a kid playing KP back. In a backline where Grimes has been poor, Broad missed a chunk through suspension, Balta isn't someone I'd rely upon for guidance. I think his first year was exceptional considering.

Has plenty of growth so I hold no concerns of his areas of improvement.

I see him as the new Astbury, who IMO was a B grade player with limited strings on his bow but a specific role to wrestle big KPFs.

Replacing top talent without good picks is hard.

Balta is our attempt at replacing Rance.
Brown our attempt at replacing Grimes.

Gibcus, I don't know. I see him as a Lever type so it's interesting to wonder how they will all fit in.
