Decade of trade: Pies, Cats, Dees and Power the kings of the silly season

In the last decade, one club has made more trades than anyone else, but have they been the best? Scott Gullan goes deep inside a decade of trades to work out the rulers of the AFL’s trade period.

Only three clubs have traded every year over the past decade with Carlton the most trigger happy when it comes to the AFL‘s exchange period.

The Blues have brought in 27 players since 2013 with Melbourne next on 22 while the least active has been Sydney with just eight trades.

While free agency has given clubs another avenue to bring in players, a look at the traditional trade period which now runs for 10 days in October throws up some interesting results.

Towner, Caddy, Meatball, Nank and Taranto all ticks.

The rest are largely fails or absolute disasters.

Carlton has fleeced us more than once. Thankfully we nailed them on the Grigg/Collins deal.

Too early on Hopper, far too early

As for Towner , I don’t know if it’s a tick or not ?
I understand he caught fire for 3 minutes in 2017 and it was fantastic, but he managed 20 games in 4 years

15 games and 28.9 between 2017-2018 for a 4th rounder you can't expect much else.

Also did well for our VFL side winning the JJ Liston.

I guess it's all about what you pay.

Hopper I agree we have time to play out but at face value from the sample we have in would say it's looking like a fail unless he turns it around next year.

I doubt we win the 17 cup without him TBH.  For a 4th round pick and a premiership medal, I would say a massive tick.

Fair enough
He was vital down the stretch in 17, no doubt

Was just very very limited , hence 20 games in 4 years
