The 50 metre penalty that was 70 metres, or was that my imagination ??

It’s especially wrong when they get this wrong in between the arcs, like you literally have a reference point to measure the distance right there. If your 1m inside the centre square the 50m penalty should take you 1m outside the other end of the square. It’s not rocket science  :banghead

RICHMOND

The Tigers were mighty brave in Thursday night’s narrow loss to Carlton. It was probably the story of the night if not for suffering a triple injury blow to Josh Gibcus (ACL), Dion Prestia (hamstring) and Tylar Young (concussion). You were always anticipating a response from Richmond after disappointing Opening Round loss to Gold Coast — particularly with Tom Lynch, Toby Nankervis and Dustin Martin back — but not many could’ve seen Adem Yze’s aside taking the Blues all the way. Plenty of positives despite coming up short on the night.

In the votes

Noah Balta was sensational — kicking three goals in attack before he was forced to switch back to defence after Gibcus went down. It creates a dilemma for Yze on how he best uses Balta moving forward given Richmond’s lack of firepower in attack. Nick Vlaustin was also enormous in defence, while Nankervis’ grunt work inside the contact was huge and makes the Tigers a much tougher proposition.

Room for improvement

Getting through this week without any injuries would be a great start! Otherwise Richmond lacked composure and polish at times despite leaving it all out on the field and general maximising its chances in front of goal (other than that costly Rhyan Mansell poster in the fourth term).

Grade

B

What they got right

Showed much more intent

Richmond showed much more intent on Thursday night against Carlton than they did the week prior against Gold Coast.

From the outset the Tigers had a fair dinkum dip which was in stark contrast to the first half in the Suns loss. To do that off a five-day break and then stay in the game until the end was a monumental achievement.

While some of their skills left a lot to be desired, you cannot question their intent - particularly through the midfield - which kept them in the game until the very end.

Clearance and contested possession game

The Tigers are usually beaten around the footy but managed to better the Blues in some key areas.

They won clearances (35-29), centre clearances (13-10) and contested possessions (142-131) against a Carlton side who has been dominant in those areas in recent times.

It was a good sign considering they lost one of their better clearance players in Dion Prestia early.

What they got wrong

Skill errors proved costly

The Tigers fumbled a bit in the clinches when the game was there to be won.

They also chose the wrong option a few times when entering 50 late in proceedings, which denied them the chance to conjure a potential match-winning goal.

As mentioned, the effort was there but it was just a lack of clinical skills and decisions which in the end denied them from pinching the points from the Blues.

Hope Ooze only gave Cripps 2 votes. He gets clearances but the number of times he throws it is incomprehensible

The one in the goal square that was the assist for the goal in the last was obvious just based on his motion even without seeing a proper replay.
