3/4 time

Richmond   2.3    4.6     5.6-36
GWS           0.1    1.1    3.2-20

Goals: Hosking 2, Greiser, Dempsey, Yassir

Pathetic last 10 mins. Pressure and intensity plus team structure completely vanished. GWS ran the ball and we just let them do it with no one defensive side of contests :facepalm.

Tigers hold off Giants to claim first win of season

The Tigers have overcome the Giants for their first win of the season

RICHMOND has responded from a shock opening-round defeat to West Coast, holding off a fast-finishing Greater Western Sydney by 11 points.

Nine days after suffering a stunning loss in Daisy Pearce's first game as Eagles coach, the Tigers controlled Sunday's match at Punt Rd in windy conditions from the outset.

But GWS launched a brave fightback from 29 points down, kicking three straight goals to give itself an outside chance of pinching victory.

Despite kicking just one goal in the second half, Richmond held on to win 5.8 (38) to 4.3 (27).

The Giants dominated after half-time, but their slow start cost them any chance of going 2-0 to back up last week's demolition of the hapless Western Bulldogs.

Captain Katie Brennan set the tone with an imposing first quarter, while Sarah Hosking capitalised up forward with two goals.

"GWS are a great team. They love to use the footy through the corridor," Brennan told the Seven Network.

"Really proud of our group to be able to stop that, stem the flow and also come out firing, which was a bit of a focus for us off the back of last week.

"We were all just ready to start our engines, make sure we started really fast.

"I thought it was a super effort from all our girls."

GWS had the four leading disposal winners on the ground, headlined by Alyce Parker's 26.

Tigers superstar Monique Conti had a quieter game than her usual lofty standards with 18 disposals, matched by teammates Ellie McKenzie and Grace Egan.

Brilliant Brennan sets early tone
The Tigers set up their win with a strong first half and much of it was thanks to a dominant first quarter from Katie Brennan. Brennan had six kicks, four marks and a tackle in the opening term. The Giants managed to slow her down, but Brennan played an important role in setting up the Tigers' win.

Up next
The Tigers have a tricky trip to take on Sydney in Coffs Harbour at 12.35pm AEST on Saturday. The Giants are playing in the final game of week three, hosting Gold Coast at Manuka Oval on Sunday.

RICHMOND                                   2.3     4.6     5.6     5.8 (38)
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY          0.1     1.1     3.2     4.3 (27)

I've got to say our first half is definitely how we want to play as a minimum standard. Clearly the girls have the same issues as our men's team with poor fitness.

Conti and McKenzie were solid as was Lavey and Shevlin. Hosking a live wire early. Our pressure up forward was elite in the first half.

Captain Brennan set the tone with her aggression and marking up forward too.
Miller was solid in defence.

Egan was very disappointing and the usual suspects like Kelly was absolutely awful again.

And why Seymour (one of my favourites) is wasting her life in defence is anybody's guess :banghead. Put her back in the ruck!!!

Greiser has been a useless dud since she's arrived. Drops more marks than Poppy Kelly so that should be a clear sign how terribly she is struggling.

Can't wait to see Sheerin back. We still need lots of improvement but a win is a win.
Our skills across the whole team still needs a lot of work as does our goal kicking.

P.S. Gabby is wasted in defence.
The club that keeps giving.

So I can assume if an AFL game that it’s a 4-5 goals breeze ?

That’s the only way the assessment of the breeze advantage makes sense (being proven by us doing fine against it btw)

Breeze was interesting, when there were gusts you'd say 2- 3 goals, when it died down nil advantage at all. Having said that for the 1st half it clearly favoured the Richmond station end.

Very little advantage in the 2nd half.

For the 1st qtr I would have a said 3 goal advantage men or women's game. It died down alot on the 2nd.

Anyways onto the actual game...

First half was excellent, first half of the 3rd qtr was excellent then it went down hill. Some very stupid moves from the coach's box. We had 2 quality small forwards applying fantastic pressure coming off the square and they spent a ridiculous amount of time on the bench in 2nd half of the 3rd qtr

GWS clearly targeted Mon Conti in the 2nd half and the umps did nothing... very fortunate that there was no serious injury ...

Serious question were you at the game?

I'm no Poppy King fan either but she was great today

Why is Gabby Seymour playing down back? To straighten us up. Also, Because the GWS forward line was very tall so we needed height. She was very good in her lock down role today. It is also clear the coaches have decided for reasons I can't understand they seem determined to use McCelland as the chop out on the ruck

Agree re Egan terrible game. Followed up her brain fade cost us the game moment last week with more of the same today  :banghead

I'm a huge Ellie McKenzie fan but her not taking the first option trying to take everyone on everytime was so costly at times it did my head in

How it can be the same for an AFL of AFLW game makes absolutely zero sense.

Shorter quarters
Lower scoring
Slower game
Lower standard

Just an absolute impossibility that the wind can have the same impact on an AFLW game

I’d suggest if you think a breeze is worth three for the men, it MIGHT be worth a goal in the woman’s game .. two an impossibility

Just my opinion
