Given the hot & humid conditions I don't think our game plan was all that disastrous.  Conserving energy for 3 quarters before flipping the game plan to a more one on style gave us a chance to win.  It was absolutely the right way to play the game under those conditions, conditions we would never ever see in Melbourne!  Going one on one earlier, especially for the whole game, would put us at risk of tiring badly & being blown away.  It was the best way to win a war of attrition.
Flipping the game plan in the last quarter certainly put Essendon on the back foot, suddenly they couldn't get out of their back half & looked shot.  Had things fallen our way we would have 4 points on the board right now (not to mention the two freak bounces that robbed us of 2 goals).

While I understand your point but the over use of handball in those conditions did cost us a win.

Even the coach in his presser said we allowed too many uncontested marks. He blamed the players and took no responsibility but he admitted that we gave them too much control. He went onto say that we over did the handball at times  ::)

I would suggest if we had shut down their uncontested marks earlier we would have broken their resistance earlier. They had come off a huge thrashing the week before and we should have taken advantage of that, we didn't. The longer the game went on and they were allowed to control things the more confident they become and it nearly cost us

Coach needs to come into question at the end of the season surely. He’s been in the job how many seasons now and we are just a pretender with no clear identity.

This is his 4th season in charge

Quote
I don’t follow the the AFLW other than Richmond games, but is Brennan considering one of the best key forwards in the comp? Greiser surely can’t be. Every time I watch neither seem capable of taking anything remotely close to a contested mark. Biggest weakness in the team imo and I’m not sold on our keys in defence either.

Yes Brennan is considered and is one of the comps best forwards but more of a high lead up forward. She's never been a great pack mark but her lead up marking is generally very good. I do wonder if the figner injury she had surgery on the preseason is impacong on her marking this year. Greiser's contested marking has improved considerably this season. IMV she is more valued to us playing further up the ground around CHF than being played from the goalsqaure. When she's plonked in the goalsquare she gets double teamed and it seems her role becomes just bring it to ground.

Quote
Not all their fault, the mids might wanna lower their eyes and try kicking to a lead rather than bombing it in at every opportunity. Then with sub 30 seconds on the clock when all we needed was a point instead of bombing it to the square where there would have been a good chance to even rush it through, that’s when one of them decided to dink it 40m away from goal.

Anyway as I said earlier in the thread, this team has the markings of one which will get bounced in an elimination final.

Yes the dink kick with 30 seconds to go was a really bad error.

Don’t think that I’m wrapped to have salvaged a draw, I think we let one slip here.  I was defending our game plan & still think it was the right way to play in those conditions.  We did overdo the handball, but Essendon over did the loose man & ran themselves into the ground doing it!  Was their plan any better than ours given the conditions?  Equally flawed at least I would say.
One more score would see us winning & we had the ball in our F50 when the clock beat us.  The long kick into the goal square just needed a finger nail on it to win the game.  KB being blatantly tackled high in the last minute should have sealed the game except the whistle got swallowed instead of blown.
So near, yet so far ….    ⏱️

Sheerin getting taken head high while attempting to pick up the ball in the last 90 seconds or so was even worse than the Brennan one

The sub-standard umpires were brilliant all evening , clearly BOG

Dreamtime draw! Late Tigers point keeps finals race alive

RICHMOND     2.2     4.2     5.4     6.4     (42)

GOALS
Essendon: Toogood 2, Alexander, Bannister, Wales, Gee
Richmond: Brennan 2, Sheerin, Yassir, Conti, McKenzie

BEST
Essendon: Nanscawen, Toogood, Prespakis, Keaney, Clarke
Richmond: Sheerin, Conti, McKenzie, Kelly, Graham

INJURIES
Essendon: Wales (knee)
Richmond: Hosking (hamstring)

Crowd: 4,407 at TIO Stadium

-----------------------------------

A SOCCERED behind in the dying moments from Richmond skipper Katie Brennan – who spent most of the week overcoming an injured ankle – has secured the Tigers a draw against Essendon that has locked up their spot in the finals for 2024.

It was a frantic final few minutes of the first AFLW Dreamtime match in Darwin, which saw both sides score 6.6 (42), with Brennan's behind coming with about 75 seconds left on the clock.

The ball was camped in the Richmond's forward 50 in the dramatic dying seconds, but the Tigers weren't able to scramble another point to secure the win.

It means the Bombers, who led for the majority of the second half, are still vulnerable to slipping out of the top eight with Melbourne and Geelong close behind, although they will be favourites to see off Carlton next week and secure their spot in the finals.

The game has come at a cost to both sides with the result overshadowed by what appears to be serious injuries to Steph Wales (knee) and Sarah Hosking (high hamstring), with both incidents happening in the final five minutes of the game.

Essendon coach Natalie Wood said Wales would require scans in Melbourne to ascertain if the integral ruck had torn her ACL, while Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson said Hosking's hamstring injury "doesn't look good".

It's understood Hosking's injury is to the same muscle she had major surgery on over the off-season.

The Tigers were more willing early to move the ball by hand than the Bombers, often staying just half a second ahead of Essendon as they carved their way through the middle of the ground in the first half.

By contrast, Essendon produced a kick-heavy game – a tough ask given the slippery conditions – as they changed lanes and moved the Richmond defence around the park. It worked for most of the night as the Tigers struggled to lock down their opponents and Essendon controlled vast portions of the match.

Richmond had a small buffer for most of the first half despite Essendon's dominance in most statistical measurements, with the Tigers proving deadly inside 50 from limited opportunities.

But the Bombers worked their way through their connection issues going into attack, with Bonnie Toogood standing tall in the final minutes of the second term to goal and tie the score up.

The much-vaunted midfield of Mon Conti, Ellie McKenzie and Eilish Sheerin were getting well and truly beaten by the Essendon combo of Maddy Prespakis, Georgia Nanscawen (wearing her long sleeves despite the heat) and Brooke Walker.

Essendon hit the lead after the break when Bec Miller handed the ball to teammate Poppy Kelly at a stoppage, instead of an umpire, leading to a free kick in front of goal and Toogood's second.

Sheerin may come under scrutiny for a dumping tackle on Alex Morcom, for which the Bomber was paid a free kick.

Young Bomber Mia Busch underwent a concussion test during the game but returned to play.

KB watch

It's been a long week for Richmond skipper Brennan, who was in a race to prove her fitness after tweaking her ankle in last week's loss to Melbourne. She played as the deepest or second-deepest forward, and shook off any concerns when she snapped truly to kick Richmond's first of the game, then followed it up with a converted set shot later in the term. She eventually secured two points for the Tigers with the last score of the game.

W returns to the Top End

Saturday night marked the first AFLW game played in Darwin since 2019, when Adelaide had an alliance with the Northern Territory, and the first women's Dreamtime game. Both teams have been in Darwin since Thursday, completing a number of community and cultural activities and adjusting to the conditions. Despite the game kicking off at 6.45pm local time, the weather sat at a 'feels like' temperature of 36 degrees thanks to the 71 per cent humidity. It's safe to say the cool rooms behind the benches got a work out.

Up next

Richmond will host Hawthorn next Sunday at the Swinburne Centre and still remain in the running for the top four, while Essendon will face Carlton at Ikon Park as it looks to keep its season alive.

In their draw with Essendon on Saturday night, a key aspect that Richmond fell behind in was uncontested marks. However, Ferguson was pleased with his side’s response in the final term to limit the Bombers’ ball movement.

“I thought we were poor in that area, in the first half Essendon had 60 (uncontested marks), Ferguson said.

“We started quite well, but then for the middle part of the game were convincingly beaten. I think we gave them uncontested marks with our offence.

“We were just way too cute at times, we were out running forward and we created an extra handball that would invite their pressure and allow them to find those uncontested marks.

“I thought our midfield really propelled us forward in the last quarter. We showed with a mindset what we can do with taking those (uncontested marks) out…it did change the game.

“There were some amazing efforts individually and as a group to rebound in that last quarter to come from behind and get a result.

“There was a little bit of our offence hurting our defence. There’s one of our growth areas from this game. We’ve got to be sharper with that side of things.”

Tigers gun sent to Tribunal for umpire contact (aflw)

MATCH REVIEW: Tigers gun sent to Tribunal for umpire contact

RICHMOND star Eilish Sheerin has been sent straight to the Tribunal after making intentional contact with an umpire, while veteran Sydney defender Maddy Collier has been slapped with a one-game suspension.

Sheerin has been cited for intentional contact with an umpire, as opposed to careless conduct which would have drawn only a fine.

The match review officer has elected to refer Sheerin directly to the Tribunal for the incident, which occurred in the fourth quarter of the Dreamtime in Darwin game on Saturday night.

Ellie McKenzie was fined $600 with an early plea for forceful front-on contact.

Not quite sure how one can intentionally make contact with an umpire when you don't actually make contact with an umpire  :huh3

It was explained that because she shoved her opponent into the umpire, the charge is as though she made contact herself

She should get rubbed out for stupidity

I've watched the vision, I think it's an over reaction but having said that I'm sure she cop a suspension because the JRO and tribunal in the AFLW is on par with the AFL a lottery

Interesting that there was no free kick given for the "push "

Probably didn’t pay a free kick because she was on her arse from a push from behind and the other umpires weren’t concentrating

It obviously should have been paid a free kick .. blatant

I was referring to the non officiating umps. Agree no excise they didn't pay the free

But it is just anther example of the sub-standard umpiring in this competition
