Like this pick, throw a key defender in with our mids and key forward.

:-\ = I don't know who'll we go for.

The question mark over Trainor is the concussion issue. He can play otherwise.

I like the pick. Anyone who thinks we don’t need key backs is dreaming. Anyone that’s not named Balta can’t be relied on and even he has his many faults

Luke Trainor

height: 194cm

D.O.B: 10-04-2006

Leagues: AFL U18 Championships, Coates Talent League Boys

SNAPSHOT: “A spring-heeled tall defender capable of remarkable aerial feats, who also uses the ball well and can swing forward when required.” – Michael Alvaro

Luke Trainor is one of the premier talls in this year’s draft, and at one point, was considered the consensus best. He’s a highly credentialed prospect; boasting Under 16 and 18 All Australian honours, a best on ground medal from the first AFL Academy game, and Coates Talent League Team of the Year selection. He comes from good pedigree too, as the grandson of 1057-goal North Melbourne and Geelong champion, Doug Wade.

On top of the individual accolades, there has also been team success for Trainor. Most notably, he kicked the winning goal after the siren to hand Vic Metro this year’s National Championships title, before going on to play an integral role in Brighton Grammar’s APS flag. Trainor unfortunately missed out on Sandringham’s third consecutive premiership this year, though, having been placed in concussion protocols 14 days out from the decider.

Trainor’s athletic profile at 194cm is built off a strong vertical leap, which he placed equal-third for at the Coates Talent League preseason testing day. The Kangaroos supporter models his game on the likes of Geelong’s Tom Stewart and Collingwood’s Darcy Moore, but has also drawn comparisons to Jordan Ridley and Luke Ryan for his ability to peel off and mark, or distribute the ball soundly by foot.

We don't need key backs who are only one or two slight head knocks away from early retirement before they've even played a game. Dumb pick. :thumbsdown

whats the status of these concussion issues? No wonder he slid so much.

Does he like to party as well?

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

They mentioned he had a concussion before the combine (I think). Has he had a history of them?

You’d hope in 2024 the club would have done its due diligence with medicals both for Trainor if he does have a history of head knocks and Hotton’s knee as well.

Tiger Trainor: Richmond selects Luke Trainor

Richmond has used its fourth selection, No. 21 overall at tonight’s Telstra AFL Draft to welcome 194cm defender Luke Trainor.

The youngster impressed in recent years with excellent performances for Sandringham Dragons, Brighton Grammar, Vic Metro and the AFL Academy.

An elite reader of the ball and strong contested mark, Trainor is also able to get involved on offence with his damaging foot skills.

Richmond Victorian Recruiting Manager, Rhy Gieschen said that Trainor was a player who consistently intercepted the ball.

“Luke is a strong mark, is courageous in the air and is a very smart decision maker, knowing when to drop off and to stay defensively diligent,” he said.

“He averaged 2.4 intercept marks per game in the Coates Talent League, and also six ground ball intercepts which is impressive.”

The athletic tall defender averaged 19.8 disposals at 77 per cent in the National Championships, earning All Australian honours.

“Luke also enjoys getting involved offensively as he can really open up the game with his ability to find targets by foot,” Gieschen added.

“He has a rare combination of aerial prowess and toughness but also class and skill. We are really pleased to be able to bring him to Richmond.”

Trainor is the grandson of VFL legend Doug Wade, who booted 1057 goals in an incredible career for Geelong and North Melbourne.

Ok just read (albeit on another forum so don’t know if it’s 100% true) that it’s 3 concussions in the last year. Fully understand the concern now, somewhat surprised he was cleared to nominate for the draft to be honest.

Hopefully for the kids sake he can have a long injury free career.
