Richmond VFL defeated by plucky Seagulls

Richmond VFL were unable to produce the type of footy it has for most of the season, falling to a hungry Williamstown outfit by 21 points at DSV Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcard Round now awaits the Tigers, who face GWS next weekend.

The Tigers got off to a wonderful start with combative midfielder Lachlan Wilson pushing forward and kicking a goal in the first minute of the game.

Liam George and Nicholas Girolami followed that moments later with classy set shots giving Richmond all of the early running.

But the Seagulls settled with crucial goals to Damon Hollow and Nick Ebinger, helping Williamstown claw its way into the contest, however the Tigers had done enough to take a 10-point lead into quarter-time.

The second quarter is where the Seagulls really began to turn the screws, getting on top in clearances and dominating time in forward half.

They managed to capitalise on their opportunities early in the term with three quick goals – two coming from key forward Brodie McLaughlin, as they took the lead for the first time in the game.

A 23-point turnaround gave Williamstown a 13-point lead at the main break, and it would’ve been even more if it had kicked more accurately late in the quarter.

Williamstown continued to own the ball in the air and on the ground after half-time, but poor goalkicking kept the door ajar for Richmond.

The Seagulls could manage just one goal from seven scoring shots for the term, to lead by 11 points with a quarter to play.

The Tigers came out of the final break with more dare and flow in their ball movement, able to gain repeat inside-50s and put plenty of heat on the Seagulls' backline.

But like they had done for most of the day, Williamstown took countless intercept marks and held strong, before kicking away late in the game to win by 21 points – booking a Wildcard Round spot in the process.

McLaughlin once again showed why he is one of the best forwards in the VFL, kicking four goals, while Jake Greiser patrolled the backline brilliantly (31 disposals and 11 marks).

Kaleb Smith was a big positive on a tough day for the Tigers, finishing the game with 30 disposals and five marks.

Harry Scott also had a great game (24 disposals and six tackles), as he continues to emerge as a star of the competition.

The Tigers will front up again next weekend in the Wildcard Round against GWS, with the date and venue still to be determined.

Richmond         4.0    5.0    7.2    8.4 (52)
Williamstown    2.2    6.7    7.13    9.19 (73)

Goals: Raso 2, Pollocks 2, Wilson, Girolami, George, Alger

The wildcard game will probably be played in Tasmania.
Nothing would surprise
The sooner the true afl reserves returns and the vfl goes back to the vfl the better for everyone

Player by player VFL Report: Round 21

VFL coach Jake Batchelor gives his player report for the Round 21 clash with Williamstown.

Kaleb Smith (30 disposals, 10 intercepts, 83% disposal efficiency)
“He had a really strong game, making smart decisions with the ball in hand, and he took some courageous marks going back with the flight as well, so I was really proud of his efforts in his second game back.”

Jacob Koschitzke (nine disposals, six tackles, two clearances)
"He didn’t have the same impact as previous weeks, but his ability to compete and his effort there showed some really good fight for us, which was really important."

Oliver Hayes-Brown (10 disposals, 22 hitouts)
“It was his first game back in a while, and he had a good battle against (Tom) Downie. He was a bit rusty with his ruck work and follow-up, but he will be better for the run.”

Josh Gibcus (11 disposals, four marks, six intercepts)
“I thought he had a really good game against Brodie McLaughlin. He is always going to have opportunities at goal, and I think he is a great player, but I thought Gibo quelled his influence quite well for the number of entries that they had.”

Jasper Alger (seven disposals, one goal)
“It was good to see him back out there. He played as a high half-forward and deep forward. He is just continually getting used to running different patterns based on what is required. For a first-year player, he is always important, and it was good to see him get a goal."

Liam Fawcett (five disposals)
“It was good to see him out there after a long layoff. He showed great aggression and drive, so looking forward to seeing him for a little bit longer on the park this week.”
