He is having an operation right now, getting a rod inserted in his leg just Browny has.

Bad luck for Newy, he will be sorely missed.

Welcome to OER britt_luvs_brett!  :)

Poor Newy :'(  :'(  :'(

They showed it on the scoreboard about 10 times  :-\ and you knew immediately from the bend in the leg he'd broken both bones right through like Browny did. Unlike Browny's steely face though Newy didn't hide the amount of pain his was in  :'(.

All the best to Newy in his recovery. Hopefully Browny coming back and playing like he did today can provide a bit of hope for Newy.

And to the Collingwood moron who yelled out "get up you c-head" - you freaking piece of slime  >:(

Another nasty break for Tigers
7:01:45 PM Sun 2 July, 2006
Jason Phelan
Sportal for afl.com.au

Richmond's gutsy win over Collingwood came at a high cost with the Tigers once again forced to deal with the loss of player to a sickening leg fracture - this time the unfortunate victim is Chris Newman.

The Tiger defender took a swing at a loose ball six minutes into the second term, but connected with Leon Davis' leg and was left lying on the ground in agony in scenes horribly reminiscent of Nathan Brown's injury last season.

"It's shattering - we're not the only side in the competition that's had some massive losses - but I reckon we've had our fair share," Terry Wallace said after the match.

"I haven't had a look at it - there's no difference between Newman and Brown - to me they're your kids and they go out and work hard for you every time and when they go down it leaves a (terrible) gut feeling.

"The boys in the box were talking about it and I told them to shut up and that we just had to get on with what we could deal with and what we could concentrate on - unfortunately we couldn't do anything about that. I still haven't seen Brownie's and I'm not in a hurry to see Newie's either."

After blitzing the Magpies in the first half, Wallace said he made sure that his players understood the magnitude of Newman's sacrifice.

"When I went back out onto the ground I mentioned to the guys that I thought they'd played a magnificent hour and to let their guards down when one of our players had sacrificed what Chris had sacrificed for the cause would be just a real shame," he said.

"We just had to keep our noses to the grindstone and keep working at it - I think they were going to do that anyway, but I just wanted to make sure that they had an understanding that we'd lost one of our best foot soldiers."

Wallace was asked if he or any of his players would be visiting their fallen comrade after the match.

"Normally to a man we would, but apparently he's having his operation almost as we speak," he said.

"Therefore we'll leave him and go up there as a group tomorrow and visit him - otherwise we would've been jumping straight in the car this evening."

Whose the orthopaedic surgeon? I heard just before that the orthapaedic surgeon regarded as top notch (one of the best in Australia)  is a Richmond supporter- is that true and is it the same guy who did Browny as well?

Newman's sickening break shatters the Tigers
Michael Gleeson
The Age

Wallace and the Richmond players planned to visit Newman in hospital tomorrow.

Newman's leg was fractured when he and Davis attacked a loose ball at right angles and kicked to soccer the ball off the ground.

Newman's shin struck Davis's thigh, fracturing his tibia and fibula. He was in excruciating pain on the ground and was given morphine in the rooms by the club doctor.

He was operated on last night, and Richmond players will visit him as a group today.

Brown said he would help his close mate through his next 12 months of rehabilitation, and encouraged him not to try to hurry back.

"When I was out there it made me feel a bit sick. I know what sort of pain it causes and what rehab and mental demons Chris has to go through.

"He is such a hard-at-it player and people are complaining that AFL players are asking too much at the moment. When you go through something like that we earn every cent that we get.

"I watched it the first time and they replayed it a few times, and I decided not to watch it after that. Newy is one of my great mates … it's devastating. It's hard to describe the feeling or what he is going to be going through, but I am there to support him and help him every step of the way."

Browny says he will help and advise Newy

Brown said he would work closely with his close friend through his rehabilitation.

``I can just tell him what I've been through and give him a timeline of what happened to me ... I can tell him what worked for me and what didnt' work for me,'' Brown said. ``At the end of the day, it's an individual thing. He's mentally strong enough to come back and he's a young man so I'm sure he'll be back.''

Asked if he had any advice for Newman, Brown said he would simply tell him to remain patient.

``Everyone told me to take my time and I didn't. It probably cost me six weeks,'' Brown said.

Round 13 medical room
03 July 2006   Herald-Sun
Dr Peter Larkins

Check out what the Doc says about the latest injuries to come out of Round 13.

CHRIS NEWMAN

DIAGNOSIS

LEG:
Newman was injured in a sickening collision with Magpie Leon Davis early in the second quarter of yesterday's match at the MCG. Both players had heavy contact to their leg region but Newman came off second best and was taken from the ground on the medicart. Examination and subsequent X-rays revealed a double fracture of the lower left leg and he was admitted to the Mercy Private Hospital.

DOC SAYS...
Newman underwent surgery last night to insert a rod into his main shin bone (tibia) and will be sidelined for the remainder of 2006. This is an eerily similar injury to teammate Nathan Brown and Newman's recovery would be expected to take in the vicinity of 10-12 months.

Poor guy - I really felt for him, seeing him with his hands over his face.  He will be sorely missed on the footy field.

If there is a positive in this (and I appreciate it is probably a weird thing to suggest a positive), it is the fact that the Club has been through it already with Browny. So they should know what to do rehab wise and getting him back. I am not saying they made mistakes with Brown just that 2nd time round they'll certainly know what to expect e.g the soreness around the muscle etc
