Richmond and Essendon will meet on Friday, February 20, in a Match Simulation as both teams continue to prepare for the 2026 season.

The clash will begin at 10:30am (AEDT) at the NEC Hangar in Tullamarine, and due to capacity limits, fans who wish to attend must register here. Live stream details of the match will be provided closer to the game.

A VFL Match Simulation between the two teams will follow the AFL game.

Great scheduling! The majority of us who work won't be able to watch it :huh3.

Same happened last year in the game against Melbourne. The one that had 7 or was it 8 periods. IIRC it was on at 11.30 or midday

And last year these match simulation games were streamed on Kayo :huh

18-club state of play for AFL match sims

Jack Jovanovski and Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
February 15th, 2026

Here’s your guide to every club heading into the match sims.

RICHMOND

AFL Origin squad members: Nathan Broad (WA)

Match simulation details (live on Fox Footy ch. 505): Play Essendon on Friday February 20 at 10.30am (AEDT), NEC Hangar — Tullamarine (4 x 30-minute quarters, no time-on)

In doubt/won’t play: Dion Prestia (hamstring), Sam Lalor (loading), Nick Vlastuin (ankle), Sam Banks (foot stress), Tom Sims (foot), Judson Clarke (knee), Josh Smillie (quad)

What to look out for:
The Tigers faithful will have their eyes firmly fixed on the youngsters, including the heralded 2024 crop and last year’s two top-10 picks. Sam Grlj and Sam Cumming are each pushing for early-season debuts, and an injury setback for Dion Prestia might open the door for one or both to make an instant impact.

Grlj will settle across half-back as an exciting line-breaker, while Cumming has impressed as a midfielder in match simulation.

The likes of Jonty Faull, Taj Hotton, Harry Armstrong and Luke Trainor will be key names to watch.

Meanwhile, trade recruit Pat Retschko is thought to have made a solid impact on a wing, and how he fares against AFL bodies will be crucial for a chance at a Round 1 debut.

There are also names on the fringe who could earn a Round 1 nod with strong outings in pre-season play - such as small forward Maurice Rioli, big-bodied midfielder Kane McAuliffe and key defender Campbell Gray, among others.

Eyes will also be on former top-10 pick Josh Gibcus, who’s had an uninterrupted pre-season and is setting himself up for a breakout campaign after persistent injuries.

Originally advice was to register for attending this.  I did this and all I got was a subscription to the EFC website?  Did everyone else get the same?
Can you just turn up, has anyone been there, is there much seating?

Just park along Melrose Drive. That's what most people do.

I am also thinking of going but don’t know where are the details to get in?
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Tigers keen for Bombers' 'physicality'

Richmond Assistant Coach, Sam Lonergan, expects Friday's practice match against Essendon to be high energy.

Richmond Assistant Coach, Midfield/Stoppages, Sam Lonergan, has lifted the lid on how the Tigers will attack Friday's match simulation against Essendon at the NEC Hangar.

The match will give Richmond its first crack at football against opposition this season, after a strong summer on the training track.

From Lonergan's perspective, it's the perfect chance to show off the hard work that has been applied throughout the pre-season at the Swinburne Centre.

"The boys are really looking forward to facing some opposition, not their own teammates, feeling the physicality of another team and putting their work from the pre-season to the test," Lonergan said.

In regards to what Friday's match will entail, Lonergan expects the contest to be fierce, with the playing group itching to face off against some real opponents.

"We will give all our guys some minutes and try make it evenly spread across the course of the match simulation," Lonergan said.

"As players and coaches, we often feel like we've done a heap of work already in pre-season, but when we feel the heat of another team, it's a good reminder to make sure we can get back to basics and perfect them.

"The intensity and physicality will increase during match simulation and after that. As much as we try and replicate that in training, it's hard to do until you play."

For those who will be in attendance on Friday, or watching via Fox Footy or Kayo Sports, Lonergan has high expectations the first and second-year Tigers will step up to their first challenge of the year.

"The fans can expect excitement. Our young players will get plenty of minutes in roles they've played over the last few years and in their junior careers," he said.

"We've already seen excitement through our internal games with Harry Armstrong, Taj Hotton, Sam Cumming and Sam Lalor.

"We will see opportunity for all of our guys to play in areas of their strengths and bring some excitement, giving our fans their first taste of a new crew this season."

On a bigger scale, the test against the Bombers is an early chance to prepare for a long season, that kicks off against Carlton on Thursday March 12 at the MCG.

"It's still early on in the pre-season, we've still got a four-week block before Round 1, so we want to make sure we are fit and healthy," Lonergan said.

"We will be there to put our best foot forward and test what we've done over the pre-season. But we've still got a four-week training block to get better and launch into Round 1 and the whole season."

Match simulation is scheduled at the NEC Hangar against Essendon this Friday from 10.30am (AEDT).
