Joel to take on tribunal

Bowden to take on tribunal
foxsports.com.au
July 17, 2006

KEY Richmond defender Joel Bowden is set to challenge a one-match striking ban at the AFL Tribunal tomorrow night in a bid to play in Saturday night's crucial clash with Sydney.

Bowden was charged with a level three striking offence after making contact with the head of Melbourne's Daniel Ward late in last Friday's match at the MCG.

Because of a five-year good record, the two-time Tigers best and fairest winner can have the penalty for the level three striking offence reduced from 225 to 168.75 points, which equates to a one-match ban.

As an early guilty plea would still result in Bowden spending one week on the sidelines, he has little to lose in taking his chances at the tribunal.

Bowden has again been a key member of ninth-placed Richmond's defence this year.

Because of its poor percentage, Richmond (8-7 win-loss record) probably needs to win five of its last seven matches to qualify for the finals, making Saturday night's clash against the slumping Swans (seventh; 8-7) vital for both clubs.

If Bowden is cleared to play in the match at the SCG, he will likely get the job on either Michael O'Loughlin or Ryan O'Keefe.

The 28-year-old has not missed a match for the Tigers since round six, 2004

What are Joel's chances tonight at the tribunal?
« Reply #16 on: July 18, 2006, 04:41:36 PM »
The Club's going to get Joel to plead guilty to negligent contact rather than reckless which would push his points tally below 100 points if successful enabling him to play this week.

What do you guys think ours/Joel's chances are tonight at the tribunal? Will the tribunal get tough after the criticism they copped last week over the Kerr incident or will they treat Joel's case independently as they should?

Surely he has a good case to argue there.

I couldnt believe Mike Sheehan last night On the Couch claiming that the Bowden incident and the Mcphee on were worse than Kerr's punch at the "Plums"

I agree with McPhee but not Bowden's.

Mike said that Bowden should get atleast 2 wks. What a joke.

For the record Barry from Ballarat who is apparently the tribunal expert on SEN said Bowden will walk tonight.  :thumbsup

Bowden penalty stands

The AFL Tribunal has rejected Joel Bowden's argument that his contact with Melbourne's Daniel Ward was negligent rather than reckless and of low impact rather than medium and, as a result, the one match penalty offered by the match review panel will stand.

Negligent one week is reckless the next or is that what's reckless today is negligent tomorrow until it becomes low impact on Friday after which it is behind the play on Saturday   :banghead :banghead ::) :help

I think the AFL is reckless in its running of the tribunal system that is flawed because it was established by a fool. And the Tribunal is clearly negligent in its duties because it put simply hasn't got a clue.  :wallywink :wallywink

Tribunal outs Bowden for 1 game
Len Johnson
The Age
July 19, 2006

JOEL Bowden will miss Richmond's match against Sydney this week after the AFL Tribunal last night upheld the match review panel's assessment of a striking charge against Melbourne's Daniel Ward.

The Tigers were unsuccessful in arguing that the conduct and impact were of a lower category than the panel decided and also that Bowden's good character, unblemished record and desire to be a 300-game player for the Tigers with a clean record was not sufficient to constitute the exceptional and compelling circumstances required to impose a lesser penalty.

The panel — former players Emmett Dunne, Michael Sexton and David Pittman — deliberated for 10 minutes before finding that Bowden had been reckless, not negligent, in making contact with Ward and the impact, which left the Demon player with a cut that required five stitches, was medium, not low.

Asked what weight they gave the argument on character, Dunne told the chairman it was not "to the extent to sway us from the original findings".

Bowden was charged with striking Ward as the Melbourne player marked a kick-in late in the final quarter of the game.

His arm was straight, as if to spoil, but glancing contact between his thumb knuckle and Ward's left eyebrow inflicted a laceration that bled immediately.

Ward left the ground, but was told by the field umpire that he saw the contact as within the contest and not incurring a 50-metre penalty.

A fine for wrestling during a 1997 pre-season competition game is the only blemish on Bowden's career, which includes 206 games for Richmond and the past two best-and-fairest trophies. He was an All-Australian in 2005, is a vice-president of the AFL Players Association and has been nominated by the Tigers for an AFL Community Award for his voluntary work with homeless children and within the indigenous community.

Bowden was "a man of great character and integrity", former Richmond player Mervyn Keane told the tribunal, and a footballer who had "demonstrated a great sense of fair play".

Bowden's advocate, Michael Tovey, also submitted that the tribunal should regard his status as a positive community role model as "exceptional and compelling circumstances".

He said the Tigers were nominating Bowden for the AFL's community award, as he dedicated regular time to working with underprivileged children and, together with Collingwood's Paul Licuria, was establishing an AFL player group to help the drug-addicted and homeless.

But the panel accepted tribunal legal counsel Will Houghton's contention that there were "abundant reasons" to agree with the review panel's assessment and, despite the significant time it took considering Richmond's submissions, decided not to use its discretion to vary the penalty.

Tribunal penalties a farce
« Reply #26 on: July 25, 2006, 03:03:35 AM »
Headbutting or punching someone in the crown jewels is only a one week offence  ???. Zizou should've played AFL  ::).

Brad Green for headbutting gets his penalty reduced by 142.19 points for pleading gulity and taking an early plea while Joel for a late clip in a spoiling contest got his penalty reduced by only 56.25 if he pleaded guilty and took an early plea. What a farce! I know it's to do with percentages but where's the justice in that  ::). Joel might as well whacked Ward properly as the worse the crime the more the AFL tribunal rewards you with a discount  :banghead.

The commentators got him off by saying during the game they couldn't see contact. No one wants to cost Goodwin a Brownlow.

Will Staff, Simmo and Rainsey have to answer to the tribunal?
« Reply #29 on: July 29, 2006, 07:52:30 PM »
Well this has gone out the window in the past few weeks  :-\.

Staff will probably get rubbed out purely because his history even though it was a clean hip and shoulder. Graeme Bond kept putting up Rainesy for a high fend off  ??? on Harvey which David King reacted back to say steady on. They said the Simmo one near the end didn't look good either  :(.

Coburg vs Bulldogs next week :help.
