Can Pettifer become our O'Keefe?
« on: September 23, 2006, 04:52:08 PM »
O'Keefe would be now the best midsized HF in the League. Not only is he a damaging forward as 4 goals last night showed but he works up and down the ground as well. Last night there were a few times he would mark the ball in defence and then would be on the end of a pass inside the forward line of the same play.

This year O'Keefe is averaging 19 disposals for 31 goals. Last year he had 15 for 31. Coincidently his stats for 2004-5 were very similar to our very own Petts in 2005-6 who started AFL a year after O'Keefe. Petts this year has also improved his fitness to be able to move and play up and down the ground more.

Do you guys think Petts have the talent to move into the O'Keefe class?

Not in the same class unfortunately but thats just my opinion. Kayne is missing the necessary killer instinct and the class of O'Keefe hes blood doesnt boil enough...doesnt seem to want bad enough for mine...but having said all that hes improvement has been really impressive and theres plenty at Punt Rd who should try and get a similar improvement. Maybe they could save there own asses if they did.

Sadly a trait of the the whole team not just Petts  :-\. We're too nice as a side and need to get nastier at the footy and opposition (legally). At least Kayne cracks it lol and doesn't just accept things. Agree he needs to put that wasted energy of frustration to better use like Richo has done under Wallace.

how old  is okeefe?

he has only become a real star over the past 2-3 yrs, b4 that he was also hot and cold.
petss this yr showed much more work rate in getting back and moving fwd and is improving by the yr. petts has the agression, can take the mark, can kick the ball. wait til petts is 27, he wil be better than okeefe

O'Keffe is 25: From the AFL Web-site

Guernsey Number: 5

Height 190cm

Weight: 88kg

Recruited From: Strathmore/Calder U18

Debut: 2000

Date of Birth: 24 January 1981

Have to say this is one guy I'd trade for without hesitation - IMHO he's a gun :thumbsup

I reckon Petts has come on leaps and bounds since Tezza been coach but I don't think he is in O'Keffe's class at the moment.

IMO, Petts just isnt tall enough to become O'Keefe.  O'Keefe is 190cm tall and has greater consistency in his overhead marking than Petts.  Petts more of the mid-sized forward than taller 3rd marking forward.

Hughes, Schultz, Limbach & McGuane are more comparable body types.  Wouldn't mind seeing one of these guys emulate O'Keefe's AA form !

No.
Little doubt Petiffer has improved but the biggest difference between the two players isn't skill but desire and mental application.

Petiffer's biggest weakness is what he lacks when he doesn't have the ball in his hands.

His statistics for tackling and 1%s is up there with the worst in the league. At times he is a blatant passenger and doesn't work hard enough for his team mates. It frustrates the life out of me.

Everyone is aware of his skill but O'Keefe like most Swans players, has got grunt in spades. His work rate is phenominal as are his footy smarts. Also O'Keefe is a genuine third tall where as Petts is a half forward flanker.
I agree O'Keefe is a gun and a big reason the Swans are such a great side. I'd trade Petiffer for him in a heartbeat.

Either that or his constant moaning at umpiring decisions. He constantly thinks life is unfair to him.
If he improves in those two areas he will get into the O'Keefe class, no problem.
It's up to him.

Has the potential, but is going to need to push himself even harder like O'Keefe does

Petts has to realise umps aren't going to pay frees to him if he dives or overplays a free.

If he improves in those two areas he will get into the O'Keefe class, no problem.
It's up to him.

I'm with you DC. He's obviously not in that class now but I reckon too he can reach that level with more hard work and a better focus.

I wonder from where Greenberg got the idea for his latest article LOL  :whistle

Kayne capable of reaching great heights

Tony Greenberg

If ‘Petts’ is looking for someone to model his further game development on, he’ll find him out in the middle of the MCG this Saturday, wearing No. 5 in the red and white of the Sydney Swans.

I refer to Ryan O’Keefe, who has taken his game to such a level over the past three seasons, that he’s now widely acclaimed as one of the main keys to the Sydney side.

O’Keefe, like Pettifer, was a late bloomer in league ranks. He managed just 43 games for the Swans in his first four seasons of AFL football, but has played every match during the past three years.
