Coburg Recruits 2012 Signings & Re-Signings

Pat Contin:
Pat joins Coburg for the next two seasons after two years on the Richmond rookie list. Pat is familiar with his team mates at Coburg and will have a big impact this coming season. Last year Pat played 12 senior games. His last six rounds in particular were very good where he was named in the best on 3 occasions and averaged 24 disposals. Pat was originally recruited to Richmond from Glenelg in the SANFL.

Daniel Vendetti:
Daniel joins the club from the Perth Demons in the WAFL competition where he played 41 senior games. Daniel has good experience playing at senior level and at the age of 24 will be able to pass on his knowledge to our younger players. He is looking forward to playing in the VFL after his time in Western Australia.

Coburg has again been active in securing young players from the TAC cup competition.

Liam Brandt:
Liam joins Coburg after a successful period at the Northern Knights. He played 14 games with the Knights in 2011. He is the half-brother of former Coburg and now Richmond regular Jake King.

Nicholas Maric:
Nicholas joins Coburg after a very successful year with the Northern Knights. He is a skilful half forward who won the TAC Cup competition goal kicking in 2011. He played 29 games of TAC cup over the last two years for 56 goals.

Paul Sahlberg:
Paul had a successful year at the Calder Cannons in 2011 where he played 20 games. Paul is a highly skilled midfield/forward type who was a regular in the best players with the Cannons.

Ozgur Uysal:
Ozgur joins Coburg after playing the last two years with the Calder Cannons. He played 34 games in total and has also 4 senior VFL games as the 23rd player over the last two years. Ozgur was very unlucky not to be rookie listed after strong performances in the TAC and we are looking forward to him have a big year with Coburg in 2012.

Jordan Iudica:
Jordan also joins the club from the Calder Cannons. He only played 3 games in 2011 due to injury but has already shown he has the potential to play VFL senior footy. He is a very good left foot kick and has been a consistent performer over the pre-season.

Blair Cronin:
Blair joins Coburg after an interrupted 2011 due to injury. He has had a very good junior career winning All Australian honours in 2008. Blair is working to get himself fit for the upcoming season and has showed the potential to be a good player for the club in the future.

Ben Drummond:
Ben also joins the club from the Calder Cannons. He played 14 games in 2010 in his two years at the Cannons and is also putting together a solid pre-season.

Coach Adam Potter had the following to say about his new recruits:

We are very happy to have Patty on board. He had a good impact in 2011 and he is in great shape. Patty is driven and sets great standards with his training and approach to his footy. I am confident he will have a good impact this year. Daniel has shown he is very committed to his footy and has played some senior footy in Perth. We are looking for Daniel to play some senior footy over the coming year.

Of our new young players Liam Brandt and Paul Sahlberg have been impressing on the track. Liam is super competitive and makes good decisions under pressure. Paul is highly skilled and is a quick learner. He has fitted into the group really well. We are pleased with our new crop of young players and are hopeful they can initially play as the 23rd and then step in and play senior footy in their own right.

We will have news on other new recruits in the near future.

We have signed approximately 35 players for 2012. We have been able to keep key senior players in Carnell, Rayson, Clifton, McErlain, Tanner, Cartelli and Jordan. The likes of Wheeler, Masters, Grgic and Murphy have also re committed and will be better after their first year of senior footy.

Potter made the following comments on the pre-season thus far:

We have added Rob Inness as our new head of fitness this year and he has the players very fit and strong. We will again be a very young squad and will be looking to develop young players to step up and play senior footy. We would like to see improvement from our second year players who had an impact at senior level last year.

There is also improvement in our senior contingent of players. Ben Clifton had a very good year through the midfield last year and we want him to take another step, Rayson is looking fit and strong and now has 50 games of experience and a player like Michael Tanner will be better after his first full year of senior footy in 2011.

We have had stability in our coaching group and are looking forward to having a strong alignment with Richmond again in 2012.

Don't know Davey. We're not playing this weekend so maybe a few of the younger boys will be allowed a run around with Coburg.

Coburg won by 9 goals according to vflfooty site. No details posted yet.

Btw it's been confirmed that the VFL will be shown on ABC TV again this year.

In a change from previous years, ABC ‘match of the round’ broadcast games will be announced on a monthly basis. AFL Victoria hopes to announce the first month’s coverage in the next week, with the fixtured time for those games to change to 1:10pm.

ABC TV will start their coverage of the Peter Jackson VFL for season 2012 on Saturday March 24.

Spot on One-eyed.

In hot and windy conditions at Craigieburn, Coburg won 10 goals to 1. The qtrs were shortened due to the heat.

Coburg played quite well and were very strong defensively.

No Richmond listed players played in the game.

Cheers TFL  :cheers

Here's the match report from the Coburg website...

Coburg vs. Frankston - Match Report
Coburg website
27/02/2012

Coburg F.C met up with Frankston at Highgate Rec Reserve on Saturday in what could only be described as difficult conditions with an oppressive heat and a strong northerly wind.

The game started off slowly but as time went on Coburg ran out comfortable winners 10.5-65 to 1.4-10

With only 7 spots left to be filled on our 2012 list, it was important that the Coaches be able to see these players in match conditions and some players came to the fore.

Michael Tanner was solid in defence and Luke Cartelli and Perth recruit Daniel Venditti were important around the ground.

Captain Nick Carnell showed the benefit of having his best pre season in years and was instrumental in several goals and Calder Cannons recruit Ozgur Uysal showed that he is up to the level of VFL and could be an exciting senior player.

As there were regular rotations due to the heat there was no specific outstanding players.

Goal Kickers: Carnell 2, Hore 2, Jordon 2, Uysal 2, Maric, Clifton

Best: Tanner, Venditti, Rayson, Brandt, Cartelli

Coburg to take VFL footy on the road this year

COBURG Tigers will travel nearly 1000 kilometres for two home games this season as the club takes Victorian Football League action to the outer reaches of the state.

The Tigers will play home games in Shepparton and Warrnambool, expanding their home base to four different venues — the most in the VFL.

Coburg will trek 175 kilometres to Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve in Round 11 to battle Bendigo before backing it up three weeks later with a 275km trip to Warrnambool’s Reid Oval to face Geelong.

Tigers general manager Jake Mccauley said the club was excited at the prospect of growing its brand and could aid its recruiting drive.

‘‘ The Murray Bushrangers ( a TAC Cup club) aren’t aligned with any VFL clubs. So if and when players coming through that system relocate to Melbourne, by us having at least one match up there a year it’ll put us front of mind,’’ Mccauley told Leader.

‘‘We’d hope those players would come down to Coburg before going to another club.’’ Mccauley said AFL partner Richmond had embraced Coburg’s venture, while regional communities and clubs were excited at the prospect of seeing state-league football.

‘‘It’s a really good opportunity for us and for Richmond,’’ he said. ‘‘ We know from Richmond’s membership hotspot they’ve got about 1600 members or registered supporters up in Shepparton and a few at Warrnambool, so we know we’re going to be very wellsupported and it’s a good opportunity for the Coburg Football Club to build its brand.’’ But Mccauley stopped short of guaranteeing the regional matches would remain a permanent part of Coburg’s fixture.

‘‘We haven’t gone that far yet but it’s certainly not off the table. We’ll see how the local communities get around and support the events,’’ he said.

‘‘By the middle end of year we’ll make a decision if it’s going to be long-term, but at this stage with the support we’ve received it’s looking like a pretty happy marriage.’’

Coburg will also play two games at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve this year.

Mccauley said the club was happy with its fixture, which will see the Tigers face Northern Blues, Geelong, Frankston, North Ballarat, Box Hill and Werribee twice.

‘‘We pushed pretty hard to get Round 1 at home,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s a really important way for us to kick off our season, obviously against our cross-town rival the Northern Blues.

‘‘There’s no AFL footy on in Melbourne that weekend so it’s a great opportunity for fans to get out and come to the VFL and see some AFL footballers and hopefully we have a really nice win.’’

Tigers beat Frankston in the Heat

Coburg was given a glimpse of its future on Saturday – and it looks bright, an array of baby Tigers helping to kill off Frankston in the club’s first scratch match for the year.

Coburg fielded no AFL-listed talent with Richmond players given the week off, and was able to keep the Dolphins to one goal in the nine-goal rout at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve.

Damien Rayson and Mick Tanner impressed coach Adam Potter with their efforts from the back line, while the second-year master was pleased with several TAC Cup graduates.

Pint-sized Nick Maric, who led the TAC Cup goalkicking last season, booted two goals, as did Calder alumni Ozgur Uysal.

“It’s going to be competitive to see who gets that 23rd man position for Round 1, and it’s good to see so many putting their hands up,” Potter said.

“I was really happy with how it went. It was great to see our young guys given a chance at senior footy.”

Potter said he would turn to three midfield stars – vice-captian Ben Clifton, young gun Willie Wheeler and Richmond recruit Pat Contin – to fill the gaping hole left by Sam Power, while Nick Carnell is primed for another big year.

Contin sat out Saturday’s practice match with a niggle but Potter said he would return against Werribee this week.

“His last 6 – 8 games last year were really good, he’s very professional and wants to earn another chance (at AFL level),” Potter said.

The match was shifted forward two hours due to the sweltering heat.
