Howat and King promoted off the rookie list

Elevation for Tiger rookies
The Age AFL round-up
March 27, 2007

The Tigers will today promote two rookies to the senior list but have resisted the urge to cover for their injured tall players by including a ruckman in those promoted. Marathon man Cam Howat and tough defender Jake King have both been added to the senior list to cover the long-term injuries of Mark Coughlan (knee) and draftee Carl Petersen (osteitis pubis). With Troy Simmonds, Ray Hall and Kent Kingsley all out injured for the early rounds of the season the Tigers toyed with promoting Angus Graham but opted for the two running players. Howat has impressed with his elite endurance running in the pre-season and King was the equal best and fairest at affiliate VFL side Coburg last year.

Tiger cubs step up
27 March 2007   Herald-Sun

RICHMOND has promoted rookies Jake King and Cameron Howat ahead of Sunday's clash with Carlton.

Given the Tigers' injury concerns, both are a strong chance to step straight into the senior line-up for the club's season-opener.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace last night confirmed Howat and King were likely to be in the final squad of 25.

"We haven't decided whether they will play yet," Wallace said.

"They have been excellent and deserve an opportunity."

The two spots on the main list opened up after Mark Coughlan and Carl Peterson were placed on the long-term injury list.

Coughlan (knee reconstruction) is out for the season and Peterson, drafted last year, is listed as an "indefinitely" out with a groin injury.

Howat, 22, played the final five games for the Tigers last season.

The hard-running midfielder appears capable of becoming a senior regular this year.

King, 23 yesterday, was a co-winner of Coburg's best-and-fairest in the VFL last year.

Despite measuring in at only 174cm and 74kg, he is a hard-at-it defender.

the fact that they both have been elaevated suggests both will play in rnd 1, no reason to elevate a player if he is not going to play, i am expecting big things from king cos he looks like he has the goods and grunt

Howat will play cos he's in very good form, but I think Kingy will struggle for selection just because there is no real injury concerns among our smalls

King did ok on Aaron Davey the other week. May be brought in to play on the pacey forwards...Eddie Betts??

Howat we know will be on the wing

King, back pocket ... i think all richmond supporters like toughness in players and from reports he has that ...

i hope King does well because at his height it is very rare to be drafted. this opportunity is massive for him ... i got a feeling its going to be Hartigan v King ... if Hartigan is gone after this year King will take his place ... so Hartigan is in trouble !

Finally.

Nows the time for them both.

However Cam will well and truly cement his spot in the 22.

Howat will become a Tiger favourite.

They both have a little more age and maturity than the draftees

With a list lacking in that regard good decision in my book! :thumbsup

Well done to Jake & Cam - both well deserved!  :clapping

I remember Jake's first game at Coburg last year and thought - "he's a beauty" simply because of the way he plays.

Congratulations to both Cam and Kingy :clapping.

As fwoy said King is a back pocket so he must be going to play on Betts. He's been playing that role all preseason. He will also free up Rainesy to play further up the ground and spend time in the midfield.

Kings promotion is interesting.  Is this aimed at freeing up Raines to run, carry and attack?  Raines was very good at keeping his man quiet in the back pocket.  Is terry looking to slowly move him into the midfield?

It's strange also because of the other back pocket candidates in White and Hartigan.  Has White fallen out of favour?  I think Hartigan's in the departure lounge just quietly.  Hopefully White and King can fight for the defensive tagging role.  It appears Newman has been freed from all manning responsibilities.

I kinda like it coz IMO we need all the help we can get in the midfield.  If Raines is slowly moved into the middle, aswell as the addition of Howat, it will surely help.  Hopefully it will keep Tivendale and Krakouer out of the team.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

I think we're trying to develop White into a midfielder also or at least play him further up the ground. He needs to improve his decision making though. Agree about Harts Harry. Like Jacko he can't find a position.
