3/4 time. Pouring with rain now.

Coburg    5.3    9.5    15.7-97
Tassie     4.5    9.6     15.8-98

Kingsley 5, Mullins 3, Riewoldt 2, Hughes 2, White, Casserly, Gazzo

Much better quarter from Jack up forward. Kingsley can thank his 3 goals that quarter to Jack's work.
White still probably the best RFC player all day. Some nice tapwork by Gus. Not a lot to write home about today as far as RFC players go.

Well done Whitey. Decided to take the responsibility, back himself and kick the running goal  :clapping.

Then Tassie get a point :-\ as their FF knocked over the goalpost  :o :rollin.

McGuane has done his shoulder as the goalpost fell on him  :o :(

Players gone off the ground because of no goalpost

Rayson makes it 11 points. They kept the time going so there's still at least 10-15 mins to go. Gazzo makes it 18 points up.

Goal to Shelton. The break was good for Coburg. Took the momentum away from Tassie. Tassie get one back though.

Only Riewoldt and White will come in based on actually showing good signs. Hughes needs to do more and does Casserley. JON needs to go back to Coburg 2s to learn how to kick it properly. Another thing that poos me with JON at the moment is he knows where to go to get the footy but his first decision is to look upwards- but sideways. Most of the time today they were poor kicks, but really even if they hit targets there not kicks thatll hurt the opposition- which is the opposite to say Casserley or even Conners whose kicks will actually hurt the opposition when they hit the target.

Agree Ramps. A disappointing game from most of Coburg's RFC players. Even Jack's first half was poor but he did well after half-time and on the back of good form should get a call up. Richo's injury may save Schulz.

A lethal reminder of times past
Sean Cusick | May 20, 2007 | The Age

A QUARTER of a century after Leigh Matthews famously broke the point post at Windy Hill, a Tasmanian VFL player has gone one better by snapping off the goal post.

"Lethal Mathew" may not have the same ring to it as Lethal Leigh, but Tasmanian Mathew Westfield looked every bit the "he man" yesterday as he destroyed the goal post in the Devils' round-seven clash with Coburg.

Ten minutes into the final quarter, Tasmania took the centre break as Ken Hall kicked a long ball towards goal.

With eyes on the ball and running with the flight, Westfield cannoned into the goal post front on, snapping it off at the base.

Opponent Luke McGuane, who had flown with Westfield before veering to his right after crossing the goal line, was caught off guard as the post fell diagonally backwards towards him.

The post clipped the Richmond-listed player on the left shoulder before crashing onto the fence, thankfully not continuing into the crowd. The post came to rest on the fence and a net hung behind the goals that is in place to stop footballs from crashing into the stands. It held back something much larger and more dangerous than a football.

The ball registered as a behind, cutting Coburg's lead to five points.

McGuane came off the field, but resumed later in the quarter after being cleared of any shoulder damage.

In what was either an example of meticulous preparation or a stroke of pure luck, a replacement goal post was on hand at Bellerive Oval. The players were given a 10-minute break as ground staff replaced the goal post and the game continued.

Coburg kicked away to win by 35 points, completely unaware that a bizarre draw almost took place.

If Hall's kick had scraped in for a goal, the scores would have been locked.

And under the VFL's rules, if a replacement post is not installed within 30 minutes and the match has gone at least three quarters, the current score stands as the final score.

"In Tasmania, only two grounds have a replacement post, which was fortunate," AFL Tasmania's Scott Wade said. "I guess you could say we've had our fair share of unusual incidents in Tassie, after the problem with the siren last year."

Coburg coach Andy Collins, who first played for Hawthorn two years after Leigh Matthews had departed the club, was amazed by the incident.

"It made the Leigh Matthews incident look timid," Collins laughed.

"It was much bigger than that, they took the whole goal post out."

"Luke's took a big whack, and he's got a big bruise on his shoulder and chest.

"But he should be fine and he finished the game off well."

First chance Iv'e had to watch the burgers this year, started well then I was thinking they must have known I was watching and started playing like the seniors. LOLOLLLOL

In all seriousness they regrouped after the interuption and showed good finishing to polish of the maps.

Got some pretty useful VFL players also, which will put us in good sted come finals.
12/10 rule this year isn't it.

NB: Kent Kingsley - you have got to be effn kidding don't you, what a joke. :wallywink

Match Report Vs. Tasmania
http://coburgtigers.com.au/

Coburg traveled to Tasmania for the round 7 game against the Devils at Bellerive Oval. The Burgers went into the game as favourites but as Tasmania showed, they should not be taken lightly. The game was played at a fast pace, but also in a fierce manner with multiple fights breaking out in the third quarter. Both sides kicked well and a high scoring affair took place.

1st Quarter

Coburg got off to the fastest of starts against the Devils as Cleve Hughes and Jack Riewoldt both goaled within the opening minutes of Saturday’s match. After Matt White kicked the burgers third after only six minutes, the game looked like being a one-sided affair. However Tasmania pounced upon a couple of Burger mistakes and ended the quarter on pretty even terms.

Coburg’s field kicking for the quarter was very good, highlighted by the skillful Al Neville and Paul Shelton who both found massive amounts of space and had plenty of the ball. Jo Gazzo goaled late which saw Coburg take a three point lead into quarter time.

¼ Time: Coburg 5.3 (33) Tasmania 4.6 (30)

2nd Quarter

Jonathan Mullins started the 2nd quarter in style as he snapped an early goal, followed by an easy goal to Kent Kingsley that resulted from great tackling and pressure in Coburg’s forward line. However the Burgers and Devils traded goals all quarter, as eleven goals in a row were alternated between the two teams.

Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls provided great run off half-back while Matt White and Kelvin Moore were both courageous down back also, and provided great pressure on the Tasmanian forwards. However no-one could stop Adam Derbyshire for the Devils as he kicked his sixth for the half and almost single handedly gave Tasmania a one point half time lead.

½ Time: Coburg 9.5 (59) Tasmania 9.6 (60)

3rd Quarter

The goal feast continued into the second half as both sides kicked six goals for the quarter. Tasmania kicked the first three, only to see that lead disappear as the Burgers kicked the next four in six minutes. Travis Ronaldson was terrific in the ruck and at getting the clearances himself; and although Riewoldt didn’t slot a goal for the quarter he was involved in every one Coburg kicked. Twice he set up Kingsley, and then a hardball get provided Mullins with another; who kicked two opportunistic goals for the quarter. Midway through the quarter the heavens opened and the skills dropped a little, although Riewoldt was classy enough to give Kingsley his 5th and finish the quarter at the same margin it was at half time; one point down.

¾ Time: Coburg 15.7.97 Tasmania 15.8 (98)

4th Quarter

The greasy conditions halted additions to the scoreboard early in the quarter, until Matt White kicked his second for the match and put the Burgers six points up around the ten minute mark.

Then one of the more bizarre things throughout football history occurred. Matthew Westfield of Tasmania ran straight into the goalpost and decimated it at the base. Unfortunately for Luke McGuane the post hit him on the shoulder as it fell. It appeared McGuane was in distress; however he returned to the field late in the last quarter.

Everyone was left stunned and unsure of what to do, so the players left the field as a new goalpost was put in place.

Fourteen minutes later the players returned to the field; the scoreboard showing Coburg five points up. The Burgers made the most of the small break and through Rayson, Gazzo and Shelton quickly kicked three goals. After Neville topped off a fantastic personal game with a goal the result was clear, and Coburg had won their fifth on the trot.

Coburg ran over the top of the Devils in the last quarter kicking seven goals to one. Jarrod Silvester put in an excellent second half that kept Tasmania’s spearhead Adam Derbyshire (7 goals) to only one after the main break. Al Neville deservingly won the ABC’s player of the match award, finishing with 29 touches. Matt White was a ball winner down back and also fared well up forward kicking two goals. Shelton was also a dominant player and continued to find space around the ground, whilst Ronaldson was again great with many contested possessions.

Coburg Tigers: 22.11 (143)
Tasmania Devils: 16.12 (108)
