Will we beat Brisbane?
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:26:40 AM »
A test of character this week. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Will we lift and not wallow in self-pity and beat the Lions on Saturday night?

Tigers' woes

Richmond is in the same boat (as Melbourne) and also on the weekend lost a game they had in their keeping late in the final quarter.

The Tigers actually led Essendon for much longer than Melbourne were in front of the Roos. They took the lead in the second stanza and seemed set to raise their opening win leading by 18 points with less than 10 minutes to go, but they didn't bother the scorers again and the Bombers - who had kicked poorly all night - found their range to kick four goals and win by eight points.

Everyone is talking about the free kick given against Richmond forward Matthew Richardson for putting his hands in the back of Mal Michael when the scores were level. Richo took the mark and played on and kicked the goal and was then penalised 50 metres.

The penalty might have been harsh, because to be fair to Richardson, he may not have heard the whistle. However, under this new controversial rule interpretation, the free kick was there.

You could say the Tigers were unlucky, but they panicked in the last quarter allowing the Dons in.

This match was the extreme opposite to their round six meeting last year, when Essendon, who were going through a wretched losing sequence, hit the front and levelled the scores at the death but couldn't close it out, eventually also falling two points short.

The Dons eventually went winless for another 10 weeks, with that game taking the stuffing out of them for several weeks.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace now has to make sure his team - already low in confidence - doesn't become too shattered by Saturday's heartbreaker and can continue to be competitive, but if they do get in a winning position against the out-of-form Brisbane, they can get over the line.

There's a chance though that both teams could still be winless when they meet in round 12.

Imagine if it's close at the end that day...

Yes, I reckon we will, we've got them while theyre out of form and in Melbourne, no reason we cant beat them!
(And they have to give Julz some bragging rights!)

Hate to be captain obvious but who takes Brown and how they go (Bowden) will decide the game.

Bowden normally does quite well on Brown.  And this year there's no Voss, no Acker.

I don't ever think Brown has ever hurt us too much to be honest.

Bowden usually does well on him.

I reckon this will be the week we break our duck. We've had a good record against the Lions over the past few year. We'll get to see Mitch Clarke up close this week  :-\.

Probably Bowden and Polak will double team Brown.

We need to shutdown Black and Power. Basically that's what opposition clubs have down over the past month to beat them. Possibly Sugar and Polo to get the jobs.

We always seem to play well against the Lions, hoping for that to continue so we can finally break the ice  :gotigers

Last 3 meetings against the Lions

2006 RD 19 Telstra Dome
Richmond  21  16   142
B Lions       8   12    60

2006 RD 4 GABBA
B Lions      11  16  82
Richmond  14  12  96

2005 RD 9 GABBA
B Lions       12  11  83
Richmond   12  15  87

Let's hope we can make it 4 on the trot against the Lions .
Joel will probably pick up J Brown. Had a good game on him at the Gabba last year.
Interesting fact last year we won our first of the season against the Lions. If history repeats on Saturday night I will insist the club petition the AFL to have next years Round 1 fixture against Brisbane.
Here's to 6 of the best from Richo on Saturday night. :rollin

I'm wary of the Lions younger brigade of Stiller, Patfull, Rischitelli & Co. We need to show them plenty of respect. If we match up well on them then we will win.

If both teams play their best footy I think Brisbane will win.

But Brisbane rarely bring their best footy to Melbourne and I think if we can make sure Brown, Johnson and Lappin don't have a massive impact we should win.

It'd be great to kick that many goals too. We've only hit the 100 mark once this year.

There'll be no Paddy, Simmo, Razor, Chaffey, Staff from that game. Sarge, Hyde and White too if they don't come in. Shows how many newbies there are in our side this year.
