Richmond poised to recruit top recruiter
Caroline Wilson | November 28, 2007 | The Age

RICHMOND has waited until after the national draft to secure one of the most highly regarded recruiters in the AFL in one of at least two high-profile appointments to be announced next week.

The Age understands that long-time Melbourne talent scout Craig Cameron has all but sealed a deal with the Tigers to take over the club's recruiting and list management with a view to ultimately handling player contracts as well.

Although Cameron committed to the Demons along with Melbourne's then football manager Chris limpan one year ago to a three-year term, he is expected to exercise a three-month departure clause in his contract, as limpan did back in August when he announced he was moving to Hawthorn.

The Tigers, who have been criticised for their recruiting in recent years, have been seeking a new senior football executive to take over the club's recruiting and list management, with Greg Miller slowly leaving that job although remaining at the helm of the club's football department for now.

Cameron was an early favourite of the board, given his impressive credentials, which were bolstered by the fact that he grew up a passionate Tigers supporter, the son of former Richmond player and life member Barry Cameron.

Cameron is believed to have broached the subject of his departure with senior Melbourne personnel but was unwilling to leave the Demons before completing the national and pre-season drafts. He was not available for comment yesterday but is understood to be close to negotiating a term of at least three years at Richmond.

The club is also on the verge of appointing a human resources executive to oversee the club's player development, along with that of all club staff, in a bid to improve the psychological profile of the club's list. It is understood the new position will be filled by a senior official from the Australian Institute of Sport.

Cameron will oversee Richmond's recruiting but the club will also retain the services of recruiting manager Francis Jackson.

Good to see that Caro is releasing stories about the RFC 6 months after the event.
The deal with Cameron was done in last April. ::)

Tigers may poach Demons recruiter
Stephen Rielly | June 29, 2007 | The Age

WITH almost a decade of relative stability up-ended by the sudden resignation of coach Neale Daniher on Wednesday, the Melbourne football department could be confronting the loss of a second key figure before the season is out.

Melbourne recruiting and list manager Craig Cameron is understood to be the person Richmond has identified to succeed Greg Miller as the club's new head of recruiting-related football operations.

The Tigers intend to reorganise the structure of their football department and like several clubs before them want to prioritise recruiting, trading and list management, responsibilities that Cameron has handled throughout the decade of Daniher's time at Melbourne.

If the Tigers are successful in poaching him — Cameron signed a fresh three-year contract with the Demons last year after being courted by Fremantle — it would leave only Chris limpan, Melbourne's football operations chief, of the group that was brought together in late 1997 to work alongside Daniher, who will coach the club for the last time tonight.

Then Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab hired Cameron, lured Danny Corcoran from Essendon to head up the football department, oversaw the appointment of Daniher and then hired limpan. Corcoran left to become chief executive of Athletics Australia in 2004 but until Wednesday the group had otherwise remained together.

Cameron, whose father Barry played 96 games for the Tigers between 1956-66, could not be contacted yesterday but Richmond sources confirmed that he was recently approached by president Gary March.

Bailey will fight to keep recruiter
AFL site
By Jennifer Witham

MELBOURNE coach Dean Bailey said he'll make it "very, very difficult" for highly regarded recruiter Craig Cameron to leave the Demons, despite recent speculation the talent scout is headed to Richmond.

Bailey said Cameron was considering his options having been approached by "another AFL club", but the Demons boss hoped his chief recruiter would remain with the Demons.

"He's been a great recruiting person at Melbourne, so we're going to be doing everything we can to keep him at the club," Bailey said on Thursday.

"I hear there's a rumour out there somewhere, but he's a fantastic recruiting manager and I hope he's still here with us.

"I understand there's another AFL club looking at him. He's got to make a decision on whether he wants to stay or go.

"We've spoken to him, the rest is in his court. We're going to make it very, very difficult from Craig Cameron to leave Melbourne."

Bailey said Cameron, who only five days ago oversaw the recruitment of five new young guns, had been very open with the coaching staff on the possibility of leaving the club.

He also said he wasn't concerned about the situation unfolding with both the NAB AFL Pre-season Draft and the NAB AFL Rookie Draft approaching in the next month.

"Craig is a very honest and up front person. He hasn't hid anything from me, or Chris Connolly or anyone," he said.

"Craig is a very professional person. He'll handle it and he'll make a decision."

I get the feeling we won't get an announcement before the PSD and Rookie drafts are over. Fair enough too, he still has a job to do for the Dees.

Tigers have made Craig Cameron a long-term offer (The Age)
« Reply #52 on: December 02, 2007, 04:48:46 AM »
From the Sunday Age

MELBOURNE will look to replace recruiting manager Craig Cameron from within its own stocks, should the highly regarded talent scout leave the club in favour of Richmond.

Cameron is believed to be considering a long-term offer from the Tigers and his departure would be the latest in a long line for the club.

Both clubs expect Cameron's decision early this week, and should he choose the Tigers, he will be in the unusual position of still holding the reins for Melbourne at the pre-season draft later this month.

Melbourne's new football operations manager, Chris Connolly, said Cameron would be missed at the club.

"Craig is well respected, he has been one of the great servants of the Melbourne Football Club," he said. "He has been smart enough to be able to set up a system that if he moves on, others can fulfil his role … But he will be very hard to replace."

It is believed the Tigers have made Cameron a long-term offer to take over recruiting at Punt Road Oval.

Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said the Tigers were set to make football staff changes but would not confirm details or speak about individual approaches.

Not sure about the "top recruiter" title but anything that boosts our recruiting is a major step in the right direction. Well done RFC  :clapping.

Based on the past two drafts Francis has done a pretty good job with our National draft picks while Cameron seemed to have a knack of finding a number of rookies at the Dees who then went on to become decent AFL players. Hopefully combined they'll make a pretty formidable recruiting department.

Camerons last effort with Morton, Grimes, Maric and Cheney was a very good effort. I actually liked Cheney and hoped hed fall to a rookie spot. Cameron did a good job and he has left some very good talent at Melbourne.

That's true Ramps, Melbourne did well. I was going more by Cameron's overall record at the Dees.
