Richmond rivals agree to compromise

Richmond president Clinton Casey has agreed to implement a series of initiatives designed to appease Brendan Schwab and his 'alternative board'.

A joint statement was released by the club on Wednesday afternoon detailing a series of agreements designed to avoid a costly and potentially divisive extraordinary general meeting, estimated at $60,000.

Firstly, Schwab supporter Bryan Wood has been put on the coaching and football sub-committee, a body responsible for appointing the next Richmond senior coach.

Also, Richmond's financial and commercial information will be made available to Michael Humphris, who is also in the Schwab camp.

The two parties, headed by Casey and Schwab, will continue discussions 'with a view to negotiating a smooth transition to a new RFC Board of Directors', the statement read.

The club's annual general meeting will be brought forward from January 2005 to December 2004 and will coincide with a full board election should negotiations fail to produce an outcome agreeable to both parties.

Richmond Football Club Media Release

JOINT STATEMENT FROM CLINTON CASEY AND BRENDAN SCHWAB

Discussions were held this day between Richmond Football Club President, Clinton Casey and former RFC vice-president, Brendan Schwab.

Clinton Casey and his Board felt that in the best interest of the RFC members the Club must be conflict-free during the crucial July to December period and, as such, the following was agreed;

1. Bryan Wood is to be immediately appointed to the Club’s Coaching and Football Sub-Committee to assist with the selection and appointment of the new RFC Senior Coach.

2. Discussions will continue to take place between the RFC Board and members of the ‘alternative Board’, led by Brendan Schwab, with a view to negotiating a smooth transition to a new RFC Board of Directors.

3. The RFC Board will make available to Michael Humphris all financial and commercial information, to enable all parties to be fully aware of the Club’s financial position.

4. In the event that the parties are unable to successfully negotiate a transition to a new RFC Board and its composition, a full Board election will be held no later than the second week of December 2004. This election will coincide with the Richmond Football Club Annual General Meeting, which – in the event of an election being necessary – will be brought forward from January 2005.

Also present at today’s discussions were Michael Humphris, Bryan Wood and Peter Welsh.

He says he has froars although I still wonder what would happen if Casey was to score an election victory at the AGM if it gets to that stage and remains on as president.

Warring Tigers call a truce
29 July 2004
Herald Sun
Mark Robinson and Mark Stevens

 RICHMOND'S warring factions have called a truce, clearing the path for the club to up the ante in its talks with prospective coaches Terry Wallace and Rodney Eade.

The waters were calmed yesterday when Tigers president Clinton Casey and wannabe president Brendan Schwab compromised on four key points.

Schwab, however, is confident Casey will step down, averting a post-season rumble for control of the club.

In a two-hour emergency meeting at Casey's offices, called to avert a potentially catastrophic next few months, it was agreed:

PREMIERSHIP player Bryan Wood, a member of Schwab's seven-man alternative ticket, would join the Tigers sub-committee looking for a new coach;

MIKE Humphris, another Schwab man, would be given access to the club's financial and commercial information;

BOTH parties would continue to negotiate a "smooth transition" to a new board of directors and;

ANY leadership challenge would be put on hold until the annual general meeting, which has been brought forward from January to December.

The Tigers, however, baulked at Peter Welsh, a former Tigers director and now a key member of Schwab's ticket, joining Wood on the coaching sub-committee.

Casey last night said he was confident the Tigers could now land their preferred candidate to replace Danny Frawley as coach.

"I can't now put a time frame on it, but it just now means that any obstacles with the appointment have been removed," Casey said.

"It is important for a new coach to know that whatever happens, his job is going to be safe.

"The process was certainly being slowed up by the uncertainty."

The sub-committee, which has already interviewed Wallace and Eade, now comprises Tigers football director Greg Miller, former AFL coach David Parkin and Wood.

It's understood Wallace is the preferred candidate of Miller who, earlier this week, threatened to quit over the inevitable instability an immediate leadership challenge would create.

Wallace also has voiced his concern about the turbulent political climate, not just at the Tigers but also at Hawthorn, where it's believed he was interviewed for the vacant coaching job yesterday.

On Tuesday, Casey was emphatic he would not step aside for Schwab so it would appear a December election is more than probable But Schwab, who described the meeting as a success, said last night he believed Casey would surrender the presidency.

"Clinton gave a commitment today to act in the best interests of the club and I would see that as being consistent with that," Schwab said.

"We would like to avoid the need for an election, but we're more than happy for the matter to go to the members if that is necessary, but I think the process we've set in place gives the opportunity for that to be avoided."

Casey made it clear he did not buckle to Schwab's demands. He said the board met on Tuesday, devised a game plan, and was proactive yesterday in the best interests of the club.

Michael Pahoff, who collected 100 signatures in a plan to force an emergency general meeting, has now put down his weapons.

"There's no need for me any more. Hopefully things can run a good course now," Pahoff said last night.

Tigers captain Wayne Campbell yesterday welcomed the compromises and said the club could devote its full attention to securing a coach.

"The most important person at a footy club is the coach and we need the best possible coach available for next year," Campbell told Channel 10.

Yesterday's meeting started hours after AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou called on breakaway factions to stop "destabilising" administrations.

"Hawthorn, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs are not travelling well on the field . . . but that shouldn't give rise to instability and people who believe that the best way to resolve those issues is to organise a coup to replace the board," Demetriou said.

At Richmond, the challenge comes mostly from former board members. The alternative ticket is led by Brendan Schwab, who served on the board until business and family commitments forced him to resign. The opposing parties met yesterday and a compromise most suitable to the incumbent president Clinton Casey and his board was established.

Bryan Wood, one of Schwab's raiding party, will work with the sub-committee to appoint the new coach to take over from Danny Frawley. That will work well for Casey.

The club has its new coach all but across the line and only apprehension about board stability has stopped him signing. Placing Wood on the sub-committee allows Casey and Greg Miller to assure the new coach that he has the support of both parties.

Michael Humphris, would-be treasurer, has been granted access to the books. He is not expected to find anything that has not been broadly published in the media.

In fact, Schwab and his running mate Peter Welsh could tell him off by heart. They were on the board with Casey when the projected $2million loss was being rattled up.

It is about the only part of Richmond that has not changed since Schwab and Welsh walked away earlier in the year. Too busy to be on the board back then, both men have now found time to devote to the club again. Interesting.

Since Schwab and Welsh quit there has been a significant change in business philosophy. Casey had sought to drive revenue streams through success on the field and pushed money into the football department. And he banked on chief executive Ian Campbell's quirky fund-raising ideas to discover new income streams. Errors that have been swiftly addressed.

Campbell is gone, replaced by the highly regarded former Melbourne Grand Prix boss Steve Wright. And the football department money has been slashed.

Consultants Crowe-Lovett, who have worked with St Kilda and Melbourne, has prepared a business plan that is about to be approved by the AFL.

Wright will take charge of a management plan that is similar to the one that so impressed the AFL when Melbourne sought help from the Competitive Balance Fund.

A new coach is on his way and the football department will be reviewed and changed. The Tigers will have handy picks in a draft that is talented but not deep. Schwab has been unable to articulate in any meaningful way why he should replace Casey at Richmond other than he is an agent for change. But the change has already been made and in the process Schwab's challenge made redundant.

Just for people's info Stever Wright is due to start in just over a fortnight  ;)

It is quite funny - on 3AW yesterday they were saying that casey "had bowed" to pressures of the Schwab ticket and the Australian is reporting that Casey was the one who scored the victory yesterday. Talking about giving the same story totally different slants  :-\

Now finally some common sense in all this. I honestly beleive that every person involved (Casey, Miller, Pahoff, Schwab) are idiots. Each has wronged over the past time frame some worse than others. Some are using rubbish tactics as a way of pumping themselves up and others are using crap like threats.....

This is a small step. None the less its an important one as it gives space and time for us to manouver.

I dont think its a win for Casey's team or for Schwab's team.....just a win for the RFC in the short-term.

Richmond factions declare truce

One casualty of yesterday's agreement was a potential appointment to the board of another former Tiger premiership player, Mervyn Keane, a move that has now been put on hold.

Disappointing to hear this - always had a lot of respect for Merv Keane.

Why can't he nominate when the election is called.  Doesn't have to run with any ticket.  Is he aligned to Casey - i'm guessing he is.

I know that Casey had been trying to get a former player on the board for a while - just didn't  know who  ;)

If we get to election stage - certainly Merv could nominate as a independant of just join the Casey ticket

He can nominate like any of us can but presumably he would have a far better chance of "winning" a spot on the board as part of a ticket.
