Suspended sentence lol no wonder crime rate is high and offenders repeat it got to love at our judiciary system disgraceful.
He hasn't been sentenced yet. that happens in Feb next year.
Per the ABC news article He's asked for an indication of what his sentence maybe would be if he pleaded guilty. That's where the "suspended sentence" nonsense comes from.
"
Last week, Corfe applied for a sentence indication hearing, which is where an accused person asks a court what the likely punishment would be if they were to plead guilty.
The County Court said he would receive a 12-month sentence that would be wholly suspended for two years."
Granted it is likely to be the outcome; hopefully a victim impact statement might mean he cops jail time. The prosecution certainly want it
What is even greater concern is some of the comments from his defence team
Exhibit A: (from The Age story:
"Defence lawyer Christopher Terry said the passage of time since the offending was significant, occurring 17 years ago,
and not a serious example of the crime.and exhibit B:
"At the time, Corfe was struggling with his own sexual identity, the lawyer said, arguing there was a remote, if not non-existent, risk of him re-offending.
“The breach of trust here is at the lowest end,” Terry said."
Seriously WTF?? "not a serious example", "low end"..what there is some sort of scale now?
Also from The Age story: "The prosecution is seeking a term of imprisonment."
And they wonder why victims don't come forward
