Balme's tribute to Cotchin:

“He made it hard for himself in the earlier days . . . he put too much pressure on himself and I get the feeling what he did, he sat in front of his mates, the players, and said, I want to be the best captain I can be for you blokes. Let me know if I’m doing something that’s not quite right,” Balme said.

“So, all of a sudden, he accepted, in today’s terminology, his vulnerability and he became a far better captain because whatever happens, happens, but I’m going to do my best for them.

“He’d be terrific to play under as a player, I’ve got no doubt whatsoever.”

“You don’t need him to get 35 touches, but you need him to get the ones he gets,” Balme said.

“He’s such a bull . . .

“We’ve just got that lovely balance in there (the midfield), I think, and he’s an important part of it.

“Other players will get the ball more often in a game, but they won’t have more impact than he does.”

Cotchin also will join Bentley in leading the Tigers into the most AFL/VFL finals series – seven.

Was Percy Bentley the one who.left us and wenf to Carlton?
Left/sacked.

-------------------------------

In 1940 Jack Dyer's father Ben, a committeeman who wanted coach Percy Bentley replaced and his son Jack named captain, was disposed in an election. Jack Dyer stood out of football for a brief time before returning to the club.

The 1940 Grand Final was against the [ex-Tigers] Page - [Checker] Hughes led Melbourne. Richmond lost largely due to Hughes' tactics when O'Keefe tagged Dyer out of the game, Norm Smith, as opposed to his normal leading style, played close to fullback Smeaton whose trademark punch-aways were gathered by specially placed rovers. Hughes also had his team crowd Kevin O'Neill on to his wrong foot and Melbourne's ruckmen played wide of Dyer.

Percy Bentley was widely criticised for not reacting to Hughes' tactics, and when he asked for a pay rise from $14 to $15 he was sacked, Jack Dyer taking over.

Bentley had been a good tactician as a coach and is credited for developing the technique of playing the resting ruckman as a forward, with the full forward leading out and the ruckman dropping back to mark long kicks in the square.

The loss of Page and Hughes had been the making of Melbourne, and the loss of Bentley was the making of Carlton. He coached them for 15 years and served on the committee and as a selector, when he died in 1982 he was vice-president.

Trent Cotchin

Like most Tigers, his use wasn’t as clean as it usually is, even when taking into account the finals atmosphere. A ripping goal early on and still got a fair chunk of the footy. Just the one tackle.

Way below his normal defensive efforts and pressure especially in finals. He needed to lead the way but didn’t do that effectively.

Love Cotch but last night was his worst game in a long long time. Fumbly, lacked awareness (which is usually his strength) & last two weeks too many careless high tackles rather than going for opponent's hips. Hope he clicks back to his best next week.

Hard to remember Cotch having two ordinary games in a row. Aside from the first bounce of the game that set up Lynch's goal in the first minute, I thought Cotch was 'off' a bit last week. Touchwood, we see him back to his best in his 250th and he leads from the front once again  :thumbsup.
