I understand the case to play kids but I don’t agree with playing kids unless they earn it at vfl level banging the door down for the coaches to select them week in week out.

I don’t think removing standards and expectations the club has built our success on is a great idea and it then breeds poor culture within the club.

Raise the bar and demand excellence and don’t lower the standards required and players will have to prove themselves worthy especially the kids.

What so we should continue to play the duds that let us down every week in the seniors?  Ross, Soldo, Aarts, Castagna, Cotchin, Edwards, Graham have all been putrid this year.
Agree but you can’t just gift youngsters games that don’t perform to the required level in the VFL this results in bad culture
The oldies have the runs on the board so they have bled and proven their worth for the club and they can help the youngsters too.
Graham has also proven his value to this team many times

I agree that Aarts, Ross and Castagna are the outliers that should be replaced but if there’s no-one demanding selection in the vfl then it’s a major problem.
Looks to me as though we have let our recruiting and especially development slip since covid.

Sonsie and mansell looked the best on the weekend I’m not convinced by Martyn.
The club that keeps giving.

Cotchin vs Bailey Smith contest on the wing?

Dimma:  "It's what Trent does. You think of big moments in big moment and this was one of them where he just got the fingertip and then when on the ground got up and kept Smith out with strength which lead to an amazing goal. He can get more kicks, more handballs, etc but it's what he does with those touches and moments that define his career and that's why I am pleased with his game tonight."

Miracle man Cotchin helps wounded Tigers rediscover their roar

Jonathan Horn
The Guardian
Mon 11 Apr 2022

Just before half time of Saturday night’s game at the MCG, two very different footballers went toe-to-toe on the Members wing: Trent Cotchin, an articled clerk who plays a blue collar game, and Bailey Smith, who looks like he’s just stepped off a float at Royal Randwick.

With Cotchin right on his hammer, Smith spilled a chest mark. The 32-year-old Tiger, who recently relinquished the Richmond captaincy, has always excelled at ground ball scrimmages. On this occasion, he was better balanced, a bit cannier and that little bit more ferocious than his 21-year-old rival. Cotchin got the faintest of fingers on a stationary ball, which released Noah Balta, and it led to a Tom Lynch goal.

It’s the sort of action that doesn’t show up on stat sheets, and doesn’t garner Supercoach points. But it encapsulated a career, and the Richmond era. The Tigers were never going to lose after that.

In previous weeks, Richmond sleepwalked through the final quarters of games against Carlton and St Kilda. Six days earlier, on a ground they’ve always hated, against a side that often gives them trouble, they conceded ten goals in a row. Their best player was mourning his dad. Their co-captain was injured. A host of others were clearly not right. Their ‘suffocate and surge’ trademark was conspicuously absent. The Tigers were 3-1-9 from their previous 13 games. “I think the Dogs can end Richmond’s season this week,” Matthew Lloyd said.

The bookies wound them out to 2-1 outsiders. But Richmond would have fancied their chances. They always match up well against the Bulldogs. Jack Riewoldt and Dion Prestia slotted back in. The Dogs are undersized and far from convincing down back, and the loss of Alex Keath exacerbated that.

As always, the Dogs racked up the stats. They had five of the six leading possession winners on the ground, nine more inside 50s, and won the centre clearance count 16 to 7. But it meant nothing. It was moments like Cotchin’s, along with about a dozen chase down tackles, that decided this match.

The Tigers have never really made sense statistically. In 2017, they were amongst the lowest for disposals, and hit outs. They had the most clangers. The way they played didn’t really translate well to television.

But when you saw them live, you understood. When you saw the state of the opposition players as they keeled over on the bench, you knew. They’d bowl blokes over, thump the ball forward, and run in waves. It was exhausting to watch – and write about. God knows what it was like as a player opposing them, halfway through the last quarter of a big game, when your lead had been whittled down, and they were coming hard.

Last year, the Tigers were tired, cranky, sore and not very good. There was a new champion side up the road. Martin was no longer the Player of the Colony. Their game against Gold Coast at Docklands, in front of a handful of drunk teenagers, each apparently with their own drum kit, was depressing. Some Richmond supporters wrote about the end of the era like the death of a pet.

But others were reluctant to completely write them off. It’s like the press gallery journos who can sniff another Scott Morrison miracle. They’ve been stung before. In 2019, the Tigers were ninth after 14 rounds. So was Morrison. Both he and the Tigers had good timing. Both were indefatigable. Last year however, both were dire.

Whenever a great side goes through a rough trot, there’s a rush to frame it as ‘the end’. We’re into the twelfth year of Geelong’s supposed decline. Yet, like the Cats, Richmond present as a team that will stick around, that will nag away, that will reinvent itself on the run. No matter what trends emerge in the game, you suspect Cotchin’s little win on the wing will personify how they want to play.

In the next three weeks, Richmond travel to Adelaide and Perth, and square off against the best team in the country on ANZAC eve. Martin is still a chance to return. Prestia, so often their barometer, will get better by the week. Rioli has been reborn as a ferocious tackling, rebounding defender. The Tigers’ young kids are prone to brain fades, but are clearly going to be good footballers. They’re still piecing the puzzle together. They’re not ‘back’, but they’re far from cooked. They’re always dangerous, always compelling, and still very much in the mix.

Would love to see him rested but im not sure that is possible atm.

Has done some good things every game and in every game at times has looked his age and struggled. One area he has been strong every game is winning contested ball for us and id say as poor as he has been at times he would be up there with clearances.

Reckon for now rather than resting him for whole games his actual game time has to be managed. Prestia back in the team should enable us to cater to this.

‘Just a little bit there’: Tempers flare as veterans Taylor Walker, Trent Cotchin clash off-the-ball

Catherine Healey
Fox Sports
April 16th, 2022 8:27 pm

Adelaide veteran Taylor Walker has lost his cool in his first game back at Adelaide Oval since his suspension for making a racist remark last year.

Tempers flared when Walker laid a heavy bump on former Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin right in front of the Tigers’ bench just minutes from three quarter time.

The impact sent Cotchin sprawling across the turf as the veteran duo’s legs then tangled.

But replays showed Cotchin appeared to lash out at Walker, before the star forward then retaliated.

“You reckon (Cotchin) pushed the foot up at all?” Fox Footy’s Jason Dunstall questioned.

“(Walker’s) just falling over wasn’t it? Oh, there it is.”

Commentator Garry Lyon said it was “hardly a kick” by Cotchin as his foot made contact with the leg of Walker.

“Just a little bit there,” Dunstall said.

“Just enough to upset Tex.”

Walker immediately lashed out once contact was made with his leg, grabbing the back of Cotchin’s jumper and pushing him into the turf.

No free kick was paid to either player.

Former captain Trent Cotchin wound back the clock to fashion his best performance of the season, matching Bolton with his craftiness in congestion either side of the main break.

Cotchin did earn the ire of an angry Walker in the third stanza, though. Walker appeared to receive an errant kick as he dragged Cotchin over the boundary line on the members’ wing and had some choice words to say to the sheepish Tiger veteran after the exchange.

Taylor Walker accuses Trent Cotchin of 'deliberate' kick in Crows win over Tigers

Marc Churches

Asked whether Cotchin got away with a light punishment, Walker gave a blunt reply on Triple M radio.

"Especially when it's deliberate," Walker said.

"I tell you what, if the shoe was on the other foot I would have been missing the next month."

It looked like he put his foot up to protect himself, if Walker wasn’t  trying to jump on him there would not have been any contact .
