Bombers, Tigers in Mumbai?Jon Pierik
April 20, 2011THE AFL could have a presence in one of the world's biggest markets if a pre-season match between Essendon and Richmond in India is given the go-ahead.
Austrade's Senior Trade Commissioner in New Delhi, Peter Linford, is finalising a detailed bid to stage a match early next year which will not only promote the AFL but also trade links between the countries.
It's understood Linford is keen for the match to be staged as part of the NAB Cup, but it could yet be an exhibition game.
AFL international game development manager Tony Woods and Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale were in Delhi during last year's Commonwealth Games and met Linford.
It has since emerged the Bombers are keen to partner the Tigers, with Mumbai understood to be the preferred city to host the match.
Richmond general manager of media and stakeholder relations, Simon Matthews, yesterday said discussions were continuing.
''Both clubs are still keen but that has been the case for a little while. We are exploring it and would like to see it happen, so that's what it boils down to,'' he said.
''The trick is how we make it work commercially and what sits around that game.''
Essendon did not wish to comment.
Ground availability would not be a problem in Mumbai with two major cricket grounds to choose from, including Wankhede Stadium, which hosted the final of cricket's World Cup.
Ground officials have expressed interest in staging the match, provided it does not affect local cricket or the national side.
It's understood several Indian and Australian companies have been contacted to help sponsor the match, with several informally agreeing to do so once the match is sanctioned.
There also remains interest in Melbourne and Brisbane Lions contesting another game in Shanghai, while a clash between Collingwood and West Coast in South Africa has not been ruled out.
The Magpies and Eagles had been due to play at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town in February 2009 but the match was cancelled because of the global financial crisis.
