It’s considered an unlucky number by many, but new Tiger Jordan McMahon was more than comfortable to opt for guernsey No. 13, as he prepares to kick-start his AFL career at Richmond.
McMahon, who wore No. 23 during his seven-year stint with the Western Bulldogs, is not a superstitious person, and had no qualms about wearing the Tigers’ No. 13, which was vacated by retiring ruckman Trent Knobel at the end of the ’07 season.
Richmond’s other recent trade pick-up, Mitch Morton from the West Coast Eagles, will wear guernsey No. 20 in 2008. He previously wore No. 12 at the Eagles, but wasn’t about to ask champion forward Matthew Richardson if he was prepared to give up that number, which he has proudly made his own at Tigerland since his league debut in 1993 (as his father ‘Bull’ did throughout the 1960s, including the ’67 premiership triumph).
In further guernsey number news from Punt Road, talented, young backman Will Thursfield has made the move from No. 36 to No. 2, which was worn with distinction by defender Darren Gaspar during his 207-game career with the Tigers.
And, Luke McGuane will wear the No. 18 in ’08, after spending his first three years at Richmond in No. 38.
The 2007 Jack Dyer Medal runner-up, Nathan Foley, will remain in the No. 41 guernsey, despite again being given the option of taking a smaller number, while Jake King, likewise, has decided to stick with his No. 46.
