“Really emotional”: Rance's “unselfish” act draws praise

By SEN
8 August 2019

Richmond defender Dylan Grimes has heaped praise on the “unselfish” Alex Rance after he informed teammates of his decision to abort plans of a comeback this season.

Rance suffered a torn ACL in the Round 1 win over Carlton and had been working towards a potential return in time for the club’s finals campaign.

The fourth-placed Tigers are expected to go deep into September with some tipping them to play off in this year’s Grand Final.

Grimes says the entire club were willing the five-time All-Australian on during his rehabilitation.

“It was a really emotional time for everyone,” Grimes told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“We all wanted to see him back playing and he made the really unselfish call to put the club first.

“It sounds like a strange thing when it’s a personal injury, but when the entire club was behind him and rallying throughout his entire rehab process over the last six months, it was a really tough call to make.

“Rancey unselfishly decided with the medical staff not to put things at risk or the chance that it could be early in a final or in a critical moment.”

Rance, 29, will continue his recovery in order to hit the ground running for the 2020 pre-season.

As soon as Jackster posted he was coming back I knew he was no chance
:rollin

 :lol :rollin

Didn’t see the surgeon and pulled the pin after training today with Cotch and Stacky

Sorry Jack you are making assumptions to suit your argument

You don't know what went on behind closed doors and within the club's 4 walls.

Well he told 200 people at the Comedy Day he was desperate to play on Sunday as was 95%
Don’t let facts get in the way hey
Which proves my point. He got told that his graft was not ready by the surgeon via the club doctors or directly. Why else would he be desperate to play then nekminut he says he won’t be playing? They are the facts you are ignoring....

Correct YBB

If anyone thinks the surgeon hasn't had any input to discussions is being foolish

Club decision , has nothing to do with my opinion at all
You can all believe what you like it’s a free world
Club butchered last years finals series and back of year by playing unfit players
It would be an injustice if we only win 1 flag in this period
For those who attended the Comedy day on Sunday, Alex was extremely clear with his intention
Unless he tells blatant lies
Leave it at that
Let’s hope we win the Flag in 2019

Dear me Jack, a personal attack?

Did I call you a fool?

No I didn't and to suggest or imply I did is not true

Read what I wrote, don't twist it to suit your purpose just read it!

I said "If anyone thinks the surgeon hasn't had any input to discussions is being foolish"

Suggesting people are foolish is not calling them a fool.

Would you have preferred me use the word unwise or perhaps reckless or better yet naive?

No personal attack at all  >:(

Why is it so hard for you to even acknowledge that it is highly likely (I'd go as far as to guarantee it) that the surgeon has had input on this decision through discussion with the Club? Seriously why?

You are entitled to an opinion but don't sprout it as being gospel and then get agitated when people call you out or challenge you on it. Opinion isn't fact it is just that an opinion

I have no doubt on Sunday Alex was striving to come back and believed he could.

A decision was made on Wednesday. 3 days later.

There is no lying here by anyone, just hard and tough conversations by all parties (including the surgeon) to come to a bloody hard decision but one that is ultimately for both player & club the right one

One player who won’t be returning this season is champion defender Alex Rance who this week pulled the pin on his ambitious bid to return to the footy field within just six months of undergoing a knee reconstruction.

Hardwick admitted he was relieved that the 29-year-old would not be risked and will now enjoy an orthodox recovery period for his ruptured ACL.

“He’s a five-time All-Australian, All-Australian captain, best-and-fairest winner, he’s just one of the best players I’ve ever seen play,” Hardwick said.

“He was prepared to run the gauntlet for the benefit of the side but the reality was it was, if we look at it from a medical perspective, it was always going to be tough to play.”

Teammates laud Rance after ‘bittersweet’ flag (Herald-Sun)

Teammates laud Rance after ‘bittersweet’ flag

Jon Ralph and Chris Cavanagh
Herald Sun
September 30, 2019

Alex Rance says he made the right decision not to test his surgically repaired knee this year but admits he took time to come to grips with the club’s premiership.

The five-time All Australian told the Herald Sun on Sunday he believed the decision showed he could put the club’s best interest ahead of his own.

But Rance conceded until star forward Tom Lynch dragged him into the club’s premiership celebrations post-match those emotions were bittersweet.

He shared an emotional discussion with injured Grand Final stars Stephen Coniglio, Callan Ward and Jack Graham pre-match, aware everyone wanted to be out on the field.

“It was hard for me yesterday. I was thinking about it this morning, I didn’t know where I sat.

“Am I player or staff or supporter? Where do I fit in the scheme of things, and it’s why I felt part of the VFL program because I was there as a coach.

“It takes time and it took people drawing me in and telling me where I fit. For Lynch in his first year, I was pretty emotional and standing with Jack Graham and he’s like, get in here, get in here. You do belong here, this is your place.”

Fellow backman Dylan Grimes paid tribute to Rance’s selflessness, declaring him “the best key defender in the modern era”.

“He’s heartbroken that the injury has hurt him this year and he wasn’t able to get out as much as he would have liked to or we would have liked him to,” Grimes said.

“But he’s just such a consistent figure among the playing group for so long now. It’s really been amazing to see someone put the club first in that that scenario where they probably had the right to think ‘Poor Me’.

“But Rancey’s gone outside himself the whole year and for my development it’s been the best thing possible.

“To play with the player and learn so much from him on-field but then off-field to have him this year while he’s been injured but in my corner as a mentor has been phenomenal for my development.

“He’s just a superstar and I think people forget pretty quickly how amazing a player he is.

“I think he’s without doubt the best key defender in the modern era.”

Rance had made dramatic progress in his return from a Round 1 ACL reconstruction but in the end he and the club decided to pull the pin on his comeback.

He said he was adamant he had made the correct call despite those swirling emotions.

“Yes Part of me is (thinking) we could have played with 18 men because it was a bit of a whitewash but I did make the right decision culturally,” he said.

“Culturally I made the right decision because whenever you say I am putting you over me (it’s the right call).

“I think I made the right decision in that as a leader. That’s the hard part. I had my surgeon who had done Tyson Goldsack’s knee and he said I can’t definitively tell you that you will bust it again because who would have thought you would do it in the first place?

“But I had to think about the reputations of our doctors and it’s more than just my knee, I want to do whatever I want with it. I had some strong conversations with Dimma and our doctor Reg (Greg Hickey) and we came to the general consensus.”

Which returning star will have the biggest impact on their club's 2020 success?

By SEN
6 Nov 2019

Three All-Australians and stars of the game sat out the 2019 season – Richmond’s Alex Rance, Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell and Carlton’s Sam Docherty.

With all three expected to return to their best in 2020, which one will have the greatest impact on the performances of their respective sides?

Despite Richmond winning the premiership without the key defender, Garry Lyon believes Rance will still add another dimension for them.

“Of course you can make Richmond better,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“I’m going with Rance.

“I’m not as confident with Docherty coming back and having the same influence as Rance will have.

“I just haven’t seen Docherty play in two years, so front of mind for me is Rance.”

Lyon also believes Mitchell will have no issues hitting the ground running.

“Tom Mitchell will come back and start getting 35 disposals from the word go.”

Tim Watson however believes the Blues getting their skipper back will provide the biggest boost.

“They are desperately missing Docherty. He is an outstanding player. I’m going with him,” Watson said.

Docherty and Rance are attempting to return from torn ACL’s suffered in December and March respectively, while Mitchell broke his leg in January.

Balme said defender Alex Rance, who recently had minor surgery on the knee that ended his 2019 season with an ACL tear in round one, was expected to also feature heavily in 2020.

"He had a huge impact around the place even though he didn't play at all last year – the way he helps his teammates and the way he encourages them," Balme said.

"He's an outstanding member of the mob so hopefully he'll be able to play all the games this year – it'll be very exciting to see him."

"We always have to hold back 'Rancey'. I know there's been some of the commentary around the draft's been had and we get a new draft pick in Alex Rance this year, which is really exciting for our footy club," Cotchin said.

"His mountain of work he did, not just on the field, but particularly with our VFL side [in 2019], that's going to be amazing for us and his development this season. He's as fit as ever, I think he had a little tidy up [operation], but he's ready to go."
