Rance takes scalps into contract talksBy Kim Hagdorn

6 July 2011 02:32PM EST In an under-manned Richmond backline the 21-year-old workhorse has taken on some of the AFL’s biggest defensive assignments in a topsy-turvy Tigers season fluctuating from finals contenders to youthful intruders.
A little less than a fortnight ago the emerging Tiger cubs sat poised to make a bold lunge for a top eight spot with a showdown against another batch of youngsters Melbourne, before a horrifying 103-point drubbing from glamour side Carlton in Round 15.
The Tigers had moved to within striking range of the top eight with a stunning 16-point upset win over an emerging glamour unit Essendon and Rance was a star in his eclipse of giant Bombers forward David Hille.
Rance is understood to have then launched contract talks with Tigers management as he confronted the likes of Sydney superstar Adam Goodes, herculean Brisbane power forward Jonathan Brown and a revolving Blues front-line offensive that included a gifted Jarrad Waite and Matthew Kreuzer over the past month.
Rance’s finest performance of the 2011 season was probably a brave effort against Sydney in Round 12 when he collected 24 possessions and restricted the brilliant Goodes to just 10 touches and the Tigers went within 10 points of a major upset at a rain-soaked SCG.
The Tigers wasted late goal-scoring chances to steal the match when star rover Trent Cotchin and Mitch Farmer missed important shots that could won the game.
Rance is understood to be firmly in Tigers coach Damien Hardwick’s planning to drive up into finals in coming seasons with a young outfit on the back of emerging potential stars in Cotchin, Dustin Martin and Jack Riewoldt.
But firming the Tigers defence and around the ball with more mature bodies appears a must along with re-signing crucial recent draft talent.
Rance appears a priority re-signing as Tigers officials attempt to lure a specialist key defender to bolster their backline, in the same recruiting strategy that has identified urgent need for another frontline ruck talent.
The Tigers have been linked to a possible move back to Melbourne by young Port Adelaide ruckman Jackson Trengove, but names of any hulking key backman to potentially switch to Richmond is not as clear.
Rance has averaged almost 20 possessions and seven marks a week in his 11 outings this season and was the Tigers preferred starting key backman against a predominantly smaller Blues forward division at the MCG in Round 15 ahead of more experienced defender Luke McGuane.
Rance is again shaping as a vital component in Richmond’s hopes of staying in touch with finals prospects for this year in Saturday night’s MCG showdown with Essendon.
