Astbury has looked far from good so far this year...becomes unbelievably important now.

Dimma just said the prognosis is an ACL.

Rance just said the initial signs aren't too good.

He then spoke about he couldn't be too sad as he's part of a great team.

Sounds like it's an ACL going by that :(.

Bummer

I thought the fact he was sitting on the bench with his knee iced was a good sign.

I assumed that if it was serious, he'd be straight off for scans.

Na mate. I think it was more because it was his 200th and didn't make a difference

This is shocking for us

Let's just hope he does a Goldsack or D Morris

Looks like he is done for the year. He will assist with coaching the backs, and it will give young Gathwaite a sustained opportunity to play which he is capable of doing. Rance is the best defender I have seen in 40 years of watching footy...feel sick right now.

Hopefully getting a season of AFL into Garthwaite is the silver-lining,,,unless they decide to send Balta down back.....will be intersting t see how we handle thing and also to get a glimpse into our future witout Rance...also on the bright side - everyone will  write us off as flag contenders now so in that regard at least it should take the pressurre off..... :shh

Tom Browne said the midseason draft will be on May 27 just after round 10.

So that's the date to lock in to find a replacement for Rance.

Speaking after the game, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the early prognosis was grim for the club's mainstay down back.

"It's probably a suspected ACL at this point," Hardwick said.

"It's incredibly disappointing, but measure of the man – you wouldn't know it by his demeanour. He's such an incredible person first and foremost.

"It's going to be disappointing if it is (an ACL). He's an incredible player and you hate to see those players go out of the game.

"We'll cross our fingers and hope for the best, but it's looking dire at this stage."

Playing in his 200th game, Rance went straight to the dressing rooms after hurting his knee, but returned to the bench to see out the match with ice heavily strapped to the injury.

However, despite the club holding grave concerns about the scans he will undertake in the coming days, the Tigers do not believe it will ruin their premiership hopes.

"Of course, it's a challenge," Hardwick said.

"He's obviously a champion of the game and he's one of the best full-backs I've ever seen … but these things can be overcome.

"It's disappointing to lose such a fantastic player, but it also provides an opportunity for someone else to get some games under their belt. We'll get to find a player.

"Are they going to be to Alex Rance's standard? They're certainly not going to be straightaway. It's very hard to replace Alex Rance. But it will give someone an opportunity."

Also another reason our mids are going to have to start winning more centre clearances...and clearances in general... :shh

Most kids will give away frees but kids are pretty much all we have,....it'll be a steep learning curve for Garthwaite or whoever plays....Chol and Moore are both quick & athletic...Chol has the leap & height too and can play ruck....they can all go foward as well.....Miller has the size & athleticism too but looks a bit of a bust atm....of course none of them can read the play like Rance can , but very few in the history of the game could....I'd play Gsrthwaite or Balta first though...will probably need them both down there at times, as Rance often does the job of two players..... :shh
