Foul fans to face fines

FOUL-mouthed football fans will face $275 on-the-spot fines after State Government legislation was approved last year.

Police will start a two-year trial in July that will allow officers to issue fines for a range of offences currently handled in magistrates' courts.

A police source said officers patrolling AFL games, and any other major sporting events, will be able to fine fans using offensive language.

"It will be up to the discretion of the officer there at the time," a police source said.

"It could be a means by which officers could control crowd behaviour. It might ensure AFL umpires get a nice break from abuse."

Massive overreaction about what happened at the Hawks game. There are fights at most, if not all, AFL games. Why this one has been blown out of proportion I don't know. And if they don't like chants about one of their players being a junkie, simple solution is for that player not to be a junkie.....
