First half 'unacceptable': Wallace

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has labelled the Sydney Swans the best team his Tigers have played this year in the wake of an 82-point loss at the SCG.

After six weeks of football that yielded two wins, a draw against the red-hot Western Bulldogs and spirited showings against pacesetters Hawthorn and Geelong, the Tigers were entitled to consider themselves a chance.

But their optimism was blown away by two quarters of clinical football from the in-form Swans.

“It couldn’t be more disappointing. We came up here really keen to see if we could get our season really alive. We thought we’d taken some real strides forward (so) to just be clinically taken apart like we were in the first half was unacceptable,” Wallace said.

After watching his players walk to the quarter-time huddle in a state of shock following the Swans’ seven-goal first term, Wallace said he feared Sunday’s game could get “extremely ugly” for his side.

But he said the club would take some heart from an improved second-half performance, led by a strong game from classy midfielder Brett Deledio.

The Tigers were plagued by handling errors throughout the game, which were compounded by their apparent inability to hold their feet on a slippery SCG surface.

It didn’t go unnoticed by Wallace, who suspected the wrong choice of boots was to blame for several players.

“As a professional athlete, you have a responsibility to go out, check the ground surface and make the decision on what’s the right footwear to wear on any given day,” he said.

“We had half a dozen blokes that clearly didn’t wear the right footwear and we’ll discuss that during the week, because that’s unacceptable.”

Wallace said it was possible some of the Richmond players had overplayed the importance of the game in their preparation and he assured supporters that the issues arising from the massive loss would be addressed before next Saturday’s game against Adelaide.

“We’re in front of our home supporters in six days’ time, and clearly we want to show them what we’ve done in a seven-week period, not what we did over an hour of football today,” he said.

“We need to show our supporters that we’re better than what we showed today.”

The boots may be partly to blame for slipping over in damp conditions but keeping your feet is a sign of balance and assurance in what you're doing. Good players don't slip over or go to ground easily.

Our skill errors happen weekly rain, hail or shine. The Swans' pressure skills just exposed every deficiency in each Tiger and as a team. That's why the coaching staff should be tougher on them at training when they make similar errors under minimal pressure and make them do the kick again so they know poor skills aren't acceptable. The skill level today was a disgrace.

Plough also needs to take blame for having a dirty day too with match-ups. Playing interstate you need to start on the front foot and take the crowd out of it to kill any home momentum. Starting with Hyde on Goodes and Tuck in the centre was too negative. Once the Swans got a couple of goals up our confidence was shot and we just spiralled back into old habits of being a complete rabble.

The whole game was unacceptable.

If he thinks the second half was ok, then think again Wallace.

What a disgrace.

SO it's only the players responsibility to check the surface?  ::)

You cant take any heart out of the second half.  We just did ok against a Swans side that had gone into "next week" mode.

Disgraceful performance that must be rectified vs the Crows next week.

TW is out of touch with coaching.

to come out and say he will discuss the wrong boots with the players astounds me.

Take some blame yourself, your the coach u fool.

he should not even bring up the 2nd half, he should only mention the first half as all good coaches would.

i cant picture malthouse coming out and saying yeah we take heart from the 2nd half.
no way in hell.

i take nothing away from today aside from lids and a few others.

patto was found wanting and we need another ruckman, and we need one fast.

Tigers 'took a big step backwards': Wallace
Samantha Lane | June 2, 2008

RICHMOND took a sizeable step backwards yesterday, according to coach Terry Wallace, who said his players had been "shell-shocked" during the clinical 82-point dismantling executed by a rampant Sydney at the SCG.

Buoyant coming into the match after an encouraging, if not entirely fruitful last month, the Tigers — who face Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday — now have six days to right the wrong.

"It couldn't be more disappointing," Wallace said after the game. "We came up here really keen to see if we could get our season really alive. We thought we'd taken some real strides forward and then to be clinically taken apart like we were in the first half was unacceptable.

"We're really disappointed as a group in ourselves … we certainly today took a big step backwards."

In what Sydney coach Paul Roos described as the most complete performance from his team for some time, Richmond was held goalless until the 21st minute of the second term and the margin was 73 points at half-time. It marked the 1000th victory for Sydney-South Melbourne in the VFL/AFL, and the Swans had 14 individual goalkickers and winners all over the field.

"At quarter-time I got down to the guys and I thought they were shell-shocked. I came back to our (coaching) group and said 'I'm not sure where this is going'," Wallace said.

He added that around six of his players had chosen the wrong boots to play on the damp SCG.

"I thought our ability to hold our feet was awful all day. I said to the guys at quarter-time … 'As professional athletes you've got a real responsibility to make sure you wear the correct footware'."

"You can lose six or seven weeks very quickly and that's what I spoke to the players about, that we just can't afford to lose the six or seven weeks of really good footy in one display," Wallace said.

"That's, I suppose, going to be our task and my task over the next six days — to make sure that some of the things that happened in the first half aren't repeated in six days time."

Roos was pleasantly surprised at how well his side had handled the Tigers and had predicted it would be a "very, very hard game" before the match.

But the Swans booted six goals to Richmond's two points in the opening term and were never genuinely challenged.

Wallace speculated that his side might have overly built up the contest internally, but said he was slightly comforted by Richmond's second-half performance as the Tigers kicked seven goals to Sydney's eight.

Unacceptable= the RFC footy dept.
Brian Royal stating during the week we will be judged by this game,
And Terry using the boot excuse, you are getting desperate now Plough.
Players do warm up on the ground last time I looked . ::)
Wallace is full of poo.
Maybe Terry might want to go back and look at his match-ups ::)
Hyde on Goodes, blind man freddy could of seen that wasnt going to work, ::)
Leaving McMahon on the ground for the entire game is an absolute disgrace, its laughable actually. If the swans didnt ease up in the last half, it would of been a 20 goal plus defeat

my son told me Jackstar that Roos was resting alot of his players more often after halftime till the end of the game
his 1st words to me on the first bounce was whats Hyde doing on the blackman  ;D
l said to him sit back enjoy your coke & watch us get embarrassed by Wallace match ups but if you dont want to watch the game its ok by me, l left at halftime
Richmond players defence or forward didnot stand a chance in a game everyone including a 13 year old boy knew we were going to get smashed in the centre on that matchup & lose it in the first quarter,  after we watched the Swans tear port apart with 8 goals 1 week before
l picked us to get beaten but didnot lay any bets this week, l knew we were no match for this aggressive defensive top 4 side, but l had hopes we would at least put of a good display & go down gracefully & the fans would be happy with what they seen.

Today the media vultures have returned & the axe is being shown once again,  because many know where the game was lost.
but most importantly is that the old style & old skills are once again back, cant blame the players cause most of the list has changed so that leaves the coach is the one who is teaching these ugly skills

Wrong footwear?

Why didn't those muppet coaches ensure that the players were wearing the right boots?

It's primary school stuff!
