RICHMOND defender Graham Polak continues his promising recovery from injuries sustained when he was hit by a tram on Saturday night.

Polak was moved from intensive care to a general ward on Monday evening and is on fluids.

Richmond Football Club also confirmed on Tuesday that he has walked a few steps assisted and has asked for water.

The 24-year-old is still quite confused and very tired but is aware he is in hospital.

He will undertake further scans in the coming days.

The Alfred Hospital's trauma director Mark Fitzgerald said on Monday that Polak appeared to have no brain swelling to this stage.

Miller uplifted by Polak's progress

RICHMOND director of football Greg Miller has described the continued recovery of defender Graham Polak as "remarkable" after he sustained ing serious injuries when hit by a tram on Saturday night.

Miller, who visited Polak in hospital again on Tuesday afternoon, was uplifted to see the 24-year-old walking, greeting people and contributing to conversations.

Polak was moved out of intensive care on Monday night, less than 48 hours after he was hit by a tram when crossing the intersection of Orrong and Dandenong roads near his Armadale home.

"To see the progress he's made in such a short time is testament to his fitness, testament to the staff at the hospital and also to God's wishes," Miller said.

"He's certainly progressed very quickly in what could have been far worse ramifications."

Miller also acknowledged the strength of Polak's family throughout the ordeal, with his mother, three brothers and aunt joined by his girlfriend's parents, her sister and partner.

"To see the strength of the family ... there were times there, particularly Sunday night, where mixed messages were coming from the nurses who were looking after him," he said.

"Some of those messages were upsetting but other members of the family helped them through it.

"I've just been there more as assistance to the family, just to make sure they had things that they needed from the club and what the club could do to help.

"Everyone together behind the scenes, Kayne Pettifer and Chris Newman, we've tried to limit the players' involvement because it's just too much. But (Pettifer and Newman) have been by his side as well.

"It's been uplifting to see his progress."

Miller added that young Tiger Cleve Hughes, who was with Polak and teammate Jordan McMahon when the accident occurred, would also be making a visit.

"Cleve's on his way down," he said. "We want Cleve to go and see the progress because we think that will be a great tonic for Cleve.

"And I spoke to Jordan, and he's buoyed by every message that he receives about the progress, making things easy for him as he knows Graham's moving out of the danger zone.

"We've kept [all] the players informed every step along the way and they also are very keen to see him. As each hour goes by or each few hours go by, he can handle a little bit more but we don't want to overload him either.

"It's been remarkable. You see so many tragic stories and to see what could have been tragic, the progress so far's been great."

thank god, thats great news....

It just amazes me the luck some of our players have, or lack of it.

Cogs, Browny and now this.

I'm starting to think we have been cursed by someone or something in the past

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Wonderful news! He's showing us what true fighting Tiger spirit is all about! One goal at a time champ and before long you'll take out your own Coleman!!  :thumbsup
I know its very early days but wouldn't it be great at some stage to see him run out in the Yellow and Black again.   :pray  It would be truly inspirational.

'Remarkable progress' in Polak's condition (The Age)

'Remarkable progress' in Polak's condition
Martin Boulton | July 2, 2008

RICHMOND footballer Graham Polak's improvement since being hit by a tram on Saturday night has been remarkable, according to the club's director of football, Greg Miller.

Miller visited Polak in The Alfred hospital yesterday and said he was walking, greeting people and contributing to conversations.

Polak was brought out of a medically induced coma on Monday and moved out of intensive care that night — less than 48 hours after he was hit by the tram near his home in Armadale.

Hospital staff last night described the 24-year-old's condition as satisfactory.

"He's certainly progressed very quickly in what could have been far worse ramifications," Miller said on the club's website.

Initial scans showed Polak suffered bruising to his brain after he was hit by the tram on Dandenong Road.

Since being moved from intensive care, Polak has continued to improve, saying a few words early yesterday and asking for a drink of water.

"It's been remarkable … the progress so far has been great," Miller said.

He said Tigers forward Cleve Hughes — who was with Polak and teammate Jordan McMahon when the accident happened — was expected to visit the hospital yesterday. "We want Cleve to see the progress because we think that will be a great tonic for Cleve," he said.

"As each hour goes by, or each few hours go by, he (Polak) can handle a little bit more, but we don't want to overload him."

Club doctor Greg Hickey said Polak's cognitive function was expected to be unclear for at least a week. He is due to have further brain scans in the next few days but the results may not be available for several days.

SEN 2pm update....

Club says there's been no change in Polly's condition since last night. Not uncommon though. He's still tired and confused and will spend most of the day sleeping. He is eating now and can recognise and respond to family and visitors and know some names.

Wishes for Polak overwhelming
richmondfc.com.au
5:37 PM Thu 03 July, 2008

RICHMOND defender Graham Polak continues a slow recovery in the Alfred Hospital, nearly five days after being hit by a tram in Melbourne's inner suburbs.

The Tigers confirmed on Thursday that the 24-year-old has been inundated with letters, cards and messages, with almost 1000 arriving through richmondfc.com.au.

Polak's partner Alyce Oksuz said the family has been thrilled with the support.

"The Polak family and myself have been overwhelmed with the well wishes across Australia," she said in a statement.

"Graham will be really grateful for all the support he has received from the football community and public in general.

"I would especially like to thank the Alfred Hospital and Richmond Football Club for their heartfelt care.

"We have been amazed and blown away at the cards, emails and flowers from everyone, especially the young Tiger fans."

Polak was moved from intensive care to a general ward on Tuesday, with Richmond director of football Greg Miller describing his progress from an induced coma as "remarkable".
