Coburg Tigers must find a new captain for 2009. Courageous leader Paul Shelton is returning to Brisbane. The Tigers wooed Greg Tivendale as a replacement, but he has returned to his country club, ROC.

Steve Cochrane, assistant to Jade Rawlings at Coburg, has returned to Blackburn as coach (he was their 2002 premiership captain). Played for Richmond reserves once upon a time too.

Shelton going will be a significant loss for Coburg just as Al Neville was last year. Interesting to see if Howat and/or Cartledge stick around at Coburg after being delisted by us. Cartledge is still training with us while Howat did that triathlon with the 1-3 year cubs.

VFL sides will be allowed to have 5 on the bench next year ...

It's official - next year sides will be able to use 23 players in selected VFL matches. The fifth interchange player being a TAC Cup listed player.

The rule will allow 19 year old TAC Cup listed players to play in Round 3, while the remainder (including 18 year olds) will be phased in from Round 9 onwards, depending on whether they play U18 Nationals or not.

Former Hawk adds experience to depleted Coburg list

COBURG Tigers have snared former Hawthorn midfielder Tim Clarke as a playing assistant coach in a new-look team for 2009.

The 26-year-old, who is also touted to be named captain, shied away from lucrative offers from West Adelaide and Canberra to remain in Melbourne.

Coburg general manager Craig Byron said Clarke's appointment was crucial after losing best-and-fairest winner Greg Tivendale, skipper Paul Shelton and Fortunato Caruso, who was lured to West Adelaide by former Coburg coach Andy Collins.

"Our average age has probably dropped from about 24 down to about 20. Even Clarkey's pretty young," Byron said.

"His hamstring played up on him last year (for Hawthorn), but we think he'll be right. He's assistant coach with David Bourke," he said.

Clarke played 96 games for the Hawks and was one of four players delisted from the premiership team after struggling with a niggling hamstring injury last season. (The other delisted players were Zac Dawson, Luke McEntee and Garry Moss.)

Under Jade Rawlings, the Tigers have had a massive turnover of players over summer and many fans would struggle to recognise the team since it was runner-up to Geelong in 2007.

Other noticeable faces at training include Matthew Deledio (Kyabram), the brother of Richmond's Brett, and Jacob Hislop, the brother of Tom, who was picked up by Richmond after Essendon delisted him.

"We think it's going to be great," Byron said. "We had a lot of 23- or 24-year-olds that weren't coming on. It's not all about winning reserves premierships so we just thought we'd clean them out and keep who we want and attract all these young kids. A lot of them are suburban footy players."

Byron said he was also excited to see former Port Melbourne goalsneak Robin Nahas in Tiger colours after Richmond selected the dynamic young player in the AFL rookie draft.

"He's going to brilliant and he'll be a great substitute for Caruso," he said.

Let's hope Tim Clarke's job isn't coaching and teaching how to kick and Bourkey's job isn't taking weights training in the gym lol.

Not sure about making him captain straight off. I can't see those Burgers who have been around for a few years being happy about a newbie getting the nod over them. It's not like Judd has just walked into Coburg FC.

It appears from the outside Coburg will struggle this year or at least be too overly reliant on Richmond listed players. Not the best for the development of our young guys at VFL level if they are playing in a crap side.

It'll be interesting to see how Lids' brother goes. He was overlooked entirely the year before in both National and rookie drafts.

Clarke lifts the pace at Coburg

Expect a fitter and decidedly faster Coburg Tigers line-up this season.

Recruit Tim Clarke is already making an impact at Tigerland after pushing the club's midfielders to personal bests in time trials.

The former Hawk, who was one of the fastest runners in his time at Glenferrie and is the brother of Australian Olympic runner Georgie Clarke, has given the young Tiger cubs advice on fitness as the team's assistant coach, specialising with the midfield group.

Coach Jade Rawlings said Clarke's presence at Coburg had already had its rewards.

"He's been training with the group and been really impressive in all the things Clarkey does," Rawlings told INSIDE FOOTBALL.

"He's a guy who demands respect and he was part of the leadership group at the Hawks which proves he has leadership skills to bring to the club too."

Rawlings and Clarke have shared a close bond since their time as Hawthorn team­mates. It was that bond that lured Clarke to Coburg after fielding much more lucrative offers from SANFL clubs.

"Clarkey and I are very close mates; he's a top bloke and we got along really well at our time at Hawthorn," Rawlings said.

It is understood, however, that Clarke is still disappointed after being delisted by the premiership winning Hawks at the end of the 2008 season and is refusing interviews
with any media outlet until he gets into gear as a VFL player.

The 26-year-old was hampered by a hamstring injury last season that derailed a solid career at the Hawks.

"No one ever leaves the game with a smile on their face," Rawlings said.

"He played 96 games with the Hawks ... he was a really hard runner in my time with  him. He was very competitive.

"He's a quality person and we're really happy to have him on board."

Clarke was a real asset to the Hawks having won the club's Most Improved and Most Determined awards in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

He made his debut at the Hawks in 2001, gradually building into a team leader and a formidable midfielder despite his small stature of 176cm and 77kg.

Rawlings said pre-season training had been solid with a number of new faces pushing their limits at the club.

Noticeable arrivals include Matthew Deledio (Kyabram) , the brother of Richmond's Brett, and Jacob Hislop, the brother of Tom, who was picked up by Richmond after Essendon delisted him.

Rawlings said he had also been impressed with former Morwell utility Ryan Allen, an agile type.

"They've all been very impressive on the track. We're very happy with the guys that we've picked up," he said.

However, taking some gloss away from the number of recruits are the departures of last year's best and fairest winner Greg Tivendale, skipper Paul Shelton, and Fortunato Caruso, who was lured to West Adelaide by former Coburg coach Andy Collins.
