From nothing to top four
« on: February 21, 2009, 01:38:05 AM »
I heard Bruce say somthing interesting on the telly last night.
A team always comes from outside the eight to top four the next year.
Sure enough it checks out.

1995 ...Richmond from 9th to 3rd
1996...Sydney from 12th to minor premiers
1997...Bulldogs from 15th to 3rd
1998...Melb from 16th to 3rd
1999...Brisbane from 16th to 3rd
2000...Melb from 14th to 3rd
2001...Rich from 9th to 4th
2002...Coll from 9th to 4th
2003...Sydney from 11th to 4th
2004...St kilda from 11th to 3rd
2005...Adelaide from 12th to minor premiers.
2006...Freo from 10th to 3rd
2007...Port from 12th to 2nd
2008...Bulldogs from 13th to 3rd

Unfortunately no team has come from outside the 8 to win the flag the next year. However Sydney(96)Melb(00)Collingwood(02)and Port(07) did make it to the GF

I thought I would add this to the thread aswell.
WHAT HAPPENED THE FOLLOWING YEAR AFTER FINISHING 9th.Seems relevant for us at tigerland.

1994 Richmond 9th...next year 3rd
1995 Melbourne 9th...next year 14th
1996 Richmond 9th...next year 13th
1997 Port Adelaide 9th..next year 10th
1998 Richmond 9th...next year 12th
1999 Hawthorn 9th ...next year 8th
2000 Richmond 9th ...next year 4th
2001 Collingwood 9th...next year 4th
2002 Geelong 9th...next year 12th
2003 Hawthorn 9th...next year 15th
2004 Fremantle 9th...next year 10th
2005 Bulldogs 9th...next year 8th
2006 Richmond 9th... next year 16th
2007 St kilda 9th...next year 4th
2008 Richmond 9th... next year ???????

So in summary only 6 teams out of 14 have gone on to play finals the following year.
At least last years 9th had a 1994 feeling about it.

And another interesting fact:

Since the competition went to 16 teams and a final 8 in 1994, there has only been 1 year - 2005 - where at least 1 team from the bottom 4 hasn't made the finals the next year.

WP
Richmond finished 9th in 2000....next year(2001) we finished 4th.

At least we can say the last two times we have made the finals we finished 9th the previous year.

Outside of Geelong and Hawthorn you could throw a blanket over the next 10 or so sides. IMO only Melb and both WA sides have pretty much no chance of making the finals. I don't see the Bombers being there either. Of last year's  finalists the Saints, Swans, Crows and Roos look the most likely candidates to drop out. A few injuries/loss of form to key players and a easy/hard draw can make a huge difference.
