Kelli Underwood
« on: February 23, 2009, 04:17:15 PM »
Just wondering what everyone thinks of the concept of a female commentator.
I believe in equal opportunity....but Im not looking forward to her calling matches involving Richmond.

To me its like going to a Guns n Roses concert and having Mariah Carey fill in for Axel Rose.

If I can do my workouts at fernwood, then I have no problem with Kellie commentating.

I don't reckon many of the blokes would have been fantastic on their first ever match. She did a reasonable job, and would no doubt get better with more experience. If she's going to be more than a token novelty, they should persist with her and let her develop her style and relax so that she can put more oomph and personality into it.

I'm sure Dennis Cometti took a while before he started dropping in the smart one liners etc.

It would've been a flat game to commentate. Small crowd and a one sided game. Apart from Ablett it was  :sleep.

I thought she did okay for her first tv game. She would've been nervous even though she's done plenty of radio work. The only criticism I have was she was a bit flat in her voice. It needed more highs and lows in her commentary to pump up the more exciting bits.

She was very flat, was a little behind in what was happening.

She's not the worst though, Matt Campbell has that title.

Didn't like it, and don't like the concept either.

Agree totally with the flat comments.  Her knowledge was reasonable and typical first game nerves showed through but I didn't (and won't) have a problem with her as long as she lets more excitement come out in her voice.  Probably did a better job than most of us could have done.  :)

Thought she did a good job.

What concept?

She did a good job for a first up effort, and I have no problems with her commentating again. What does it matter, anyway, that she's a woman? Who cares.

Well without being too mean I thought she was crap, I actually turned over, she has a poo TV commentating voice. I work in a very proactive female environment which I support whole heartedly. But sorry her voice does not suite commentating end of story.

Considering it was a one off - we wont have to worry about her for the remainder of this year  ;D

I agree with wayne, about the flat comment and being a bit behind the play at times. I was surprised at the time that they got her to call with Tim Lane but in hindsight was probably the best option; that is the most experienced option.

Thought she saounded very nervous but the nerves settled, I don't think she was helped by it being such a crap game ;D

She is certainly not the worst I've ever heard, certainly not the best

Exactly, but I think there are plenty better, so you have to wonder if it's tokenism again.
I think Christy Malthouse does a good job and holds her own against her male counterparts.
While I didn't think Kelli did a bad job, I just wasn't overwhelmed by her.
But it was her first go at it, and deserves a bit of time to steady the nerves etc.
Same with Grant Hackett, he's still like a fish out of water  :lol as a sports reporter.

Happy to hear a female voice calling the footy.  Kelli obviously loves her footy, and  commentated play rather than attempt to predict it, so I didn't have a problem with her call.
