Wallace is an egotist. It's all for Terry.
He walked out of the Bulldogs with a game and a year to run on his contract. Rumour was rife in 2002 that he was the first choice candidate for the Sydney job after Eade got sacked and he was packing his bags to head up there. It turned pear shaped for him as after Smorgons initial disappointment he declared that he would force Terry to honour his contract if he took the Sydney job which in effect was a disguised blessing for the Swans as they got to two Grand Finals from Paul Roos tuition.
Where are you getting this historical info?
Wallace had 2 years to run on his contract. The one game is irrelevant - he was sacked after round 21 when he told the bulldogs he wouldn't continue after 2002.
Eade wasn't sacked by Sydney. He resigned on June 26, 2002 (walked before they could sack him).
Yep, Wallace was allegedly chased by Sydney to coach them. Was allegedly going there.
If Smorgon declared he would force Terry to honour his contract it wasn't in effect a blessing in disguise because the pressure to give Paul Roos the job for 2003 came from within the swans.
It was actually a bit more than pressure. It was an uproar that the caretaker coach might not be given the job.
On the surface it seems a bit rich that Wallace would allegedly be negotiating a deal at Sydney when employed by the Bulldogs on a contract.
In reality, who wouldn't try to secure their future elsewhere if it's not working out where they are and before giving notice to the current employer?
