First half is what cost Coburg. They didn't take advantage of the breeze in the first qtr and then Box Hill got a break which they held onto for the rest of the game.

Going by the commentary it sounded as though apart from the tall Tigers up front most of the RFC guys had ordinary games. Didn't hear much of Thursty or Thomson. Not sure if Hislop is okay as his name was called after he went off with an ankle. Silvester was on Thorp and he also took the kick-ins which he struggled with by the sound of it yet no change was made. King was Kingy. VFL player at best. I didn't hear Rainesy mentioned until the 3rd quarter although he got a fair bit of it in the last. Connors and Edwards got a fair bit of it but they made a few blues (turnovers) according to the commentary. Cotch was mentioned only a few times but he would've been on and off the ground as it was his first game back.

Interested to know the views of those who went today to get a truer picture.

great to see Vicks show a bit, FFS leave him there and let him build on that form, last thing we need is to jolt the kids confidence bringing him up too early and folding...Like what i hear though :thumbsup

Why not play him? If he is tall and kicking goals he might as well get a try in forward pocket. Must be a better option than Graham for 2nd ruck.

We have lost 4 game / 4

I would like to see Cotchin, Cousins, Connors, Vickery, Thomson, Thursfeild all get go at senior side run very soon.

Cotch had 21 possies today

Jon Ralph on the 5th quarter

- Cotchin's start was ordinary but once he got going he had 21 disposals and showed the poise and class Richmond has been asking for.

- Simmo also got around 20 possies and kicked 3 goals.

- Cuz will be back next week. He's had 45 days in rehab. The club is yet to decide whether the comeback will be in the VFL or AFL. Ralph reckons it might be the AFL given we're playing at the small SCG and with Richo iffy. Maher said next week is winnable given the Swans are coming back from Perth. Put in your big guns and go for it.

unless Vick has improved fivefold then he's too green to be at afl standard as a KPP, let him grow some confidence and build on his game at senior VFL for a short while...and late news just in GUS played great against key NM rucks in tonights boiover :shh

from today's Age:

Another top draft pick, Trent Cotchin, had a solid hitout for the Coburg Tigers in his return game from injury.

"Cotchin was good. He only played 50 minutes … but he won the ball well and used it well," Coburg Tigers coach Jade Rawlings said.

The No. 2 pick in the 2007 AFL draft amassed 17 disposals in his short amount of game time.

Andrew Raines (20 disposals) and Troy Simmonds (19 disposals, 27 hitouts) both had impressive stints in the Tigers' loss.

Impressive stats for Simmonds, I didn't realize he did that well. I thought he was ok but not quite right yet.
Raines - similar. I noticed a couple of nice kicks but not much else of him.

Coburg seemed to struggle with the windy conditions and weren’t as clean with disposal as Box Hill. I thought the 2 best were Coburg listed players (no.12 not sure who he was & no.5 Carrick).

Connors – couldn’t do much right and was very down on himself.
Cotchin – stuff! Lots of short bursts on the ground and oozes class.
Edwards – serviceable.
Hislop – a speccy and nice goal from it.
King – cleaned up Schulz and himself with his fearless attack.
Schulz – 2nd half was good after returning from being cleaned up. Some strong marks on fast leads.
Thomson – hard at the ball. Thought he had an ordinary day.
Thursfield – some nice creative possessions without standing out.
Vickery – looked dangerous when forward.
Browne looks a good prospect in the ruck, Silvester reads the play well and is a very good VFL player.

If Richo is out next week injured then I think Schulz deserves another crack, based on this game. I think the only player who stood out was Cotchin but he needs more match fitness. I’d promote him anyway.

ooh my god please NO TO SCHULZ.

we dont need him. He is another who is a good VFL player and thats it. he is lazy and should use his size to tackle and chase down yet DOESN'T.

Id rather try a Vickery next week if Richo misses.

Time to start blooding some new ones instead of the same old Schulz and Simmo

Same as I predicted for Coughlan a few weeks back - barring further injury, Cotchin won't be in the seniors for at least another 2-3 weeks yet.  They will build his match fitness up before playing him at the top.

Pushing him too hard before he's ready is just going to get him injured again.
The guy has missed around 4-5 months of training because he overtrained, yet you want him to step up to AFL level after 60% of a VFL game?
Glad you two aren't in charge

If you are fit enough to play VFL why can you not play AFL?

Cotchin @ 50% game time in a forward pocket would be a better option than most of our players.

I'm glad I'm not in charge as well. :D You'd have a point if I'd suggested I wanted to be.  :wallywink

I expect Cotchin will spend another week at least at Coburg but on what I saw Saturday and with the interchange system allowing breathers I wouldn't be surprised if he was promoted.
I thought he was far above VFL standard even without a fitness base.

Round 3 Match Report
coburgtigers.com.au

BOX HILL HAWKS V COBURG
BOX HILL CITY OVAL
SATURDAY 25TH APRIL

The Burgers turned up to Box Hill City Oval on Anzac Day and faced a fired up Box Hill side. Coburg had not lost to the Hawks since 2004, and in freezing wintery conditions the boys were keen to keep that record intact. A solid wind favoured the end the Hawks kicked to in the first term, but the breeze proved not to be a key factor as play continued throughout the day.

Trent Cotchin was back from injury playing his first game for 2009, and looked smooth for the Tigers as he set up the Burgers first major of the day. The Hawks had more possession of the ball in the first, but the Burgers were able to capitalise on their scoring opportunities and went into the first break trailing by just a solitary behind.

Quarter Time: Coburg Tigers 3.1 (19) Box Hill 3.2 (20)

The second quarter started badly for the Tigers as key players Jay Schultz and Jake King were involved in a head on collision forcing both players to leave the field. Fortunately both returned in the third term. However the quarter didn't really improve as the Hawks kicked away to a 22 point lead at the main change. The margin could have been even greater had it not been for the great work from Jarrod Silvester and Andrew Raines in defence, both boys won the contested ball and cut off the hawk attacks.

Half Time: Coburg Tigers 5.3 (33) Box Hill 8.7 (55)

Troy Simmons who was close to best on ground with 23 disposals and 27 hit outs, moved forward in the third term booting two goals. Nick Liddle was also instrumental in the third term with his tackling and work at the stoppages a standout. Jay Schultz returned to the ground in the third term and provided a great target up forward marking well and finishing with three second half majors. The Burgers won the quarter and went into the last change believing they were a great chance to run over the Hawks in the final term to snatch victory.

3 Quarter Time: Coburg Tigers 9.4 (58) Box Hill Hawks 11.9 (75)

Richmond's 2009 first draft pick Tyrone Vickery was a focal point at Centre Half Forward. He led and marked well finishing with three majors for the day. Young Andrew Duhau, from the TAC Cup, was elevated to the Burger side this week and showed he could match it at the top level with a fine gutsy performance, while Nat Caruso was also hard around the stoppages all day.

The Burgers battled hard in the final term but couldn't cut the margin that saw the Hawks run out 19 point victors.

This Sunday sees the Burgers return home to ABD Group Stadium to take on the Casey Scorpions on Saturday May 2nd. The game will be broadcast live on the ABC starting at 1.10pm, while the reserves begin at 10.20am

Final Scores

Coburg Tigers  3.1  5.3    9.4     12.6 (78)
Box Hill Hawks 3.2   8.7   11.9   14.13 (97)

Goal Kickers: J. Schulz 3, T. Simmonds 3, T. Vickery 3, T. Hislop 2, A. Browne

Best Players: N. Liddle, J. Schulz, T. Simmonds, A. Duhau, T. Vickery, G. Carrick

RESERVES

Unfortunately the Burger reserves also had a loss on the weekend. Similar to the senior game the Hawks led at each change and ended up 27 point winners. Kayne Pettifer was back to his best form while Dean Putt dominated in the ruck and around the ground. Jacob Hislop was also instrumental finishing with three majors. All three boys could see themselves elevated into the senior side next week.

Coburg Tigers 3.3   7.4    9.6    12.10 (82)
Box Hill Hawks 3.5   9.8  11.11  16.13 (109)

Goal Kickers: J. Hislop 3, R. Allan 2, N. Cattapan 2, J. Bassi, K. Pettifer, C. Hughes, G. Polak, T. Groves

Best Players: K. Pettifer, D. Putt, J. Hislop, R. Jordon, M. Ambrose, N. Cattapan
