Tell me about Butcher
« on: May 18, 2009, 10:27:50 PM »
Hearing all sorts of wild stories on these boards about tanking with an aim to snaffling this kid...so how good is he...I heard Vickery was going to be awesome this time last year...lets just say i hope he has a pile of improvement left in him ::)...There are no guarantees come draft time and there's no substitute for teaching a young kid how to WIN...No first R draft pick is worth the amount of pain a fan should endure for 4 months without winning a game...I just cant make sense of that ???

A bit about his old man:

Maffra inducts its Hall of Fame

MORE than 200 of Maffra Football Club's faithful turned out to see premiership coach Wayne Butcher inducted as a legend in the club's new Hall of Fame last Saturday.
Butcher was recognised with the top award for his dedication to the club over more than three decades.

He played 210 senior games for the Eagles before beginning an exceptional coaching career in 1990.

Butcher coached Maffra's reserves to flags in 1990 and 1991, before a five-year stint at Boisdale-Briagolong which netted him another flag and three runners-up trophies.

In 1997, he coached Maffra's under-18s to be runners-up then returned to Boisdale-Briagolong for four years, including two flags.

Butcher became Maffra's senior coach in 2002 and led the Eagles to a drought-breaking premiership over Wonthaggi.

He coached the seniors to a premiership hat-trick, before Maffra's dream run was ended by Traralgon in the 2005 grand final.

Since 2006, Butcher has led Maffra's under-16s to a flag and a runners-up trophy.

He remains the only person to have coached the Eagles in all four grades of football and in his 18 years as coach of teams at Maffra and Boisdale-Briagolong, his charges have never finished lower than third.

Nine others were also inducted as members in the Hall of Fame at a function at Maffra Football Netball Clubs social rooms on Saturday.

The inductees were Charles Streeter, Sam Barrett, Arthur Batchelor, Tom Tiger Burley, Dave Higgins, Bill Pleydell, John Vardy, Jeff Gieschen and Graham Robbins.

Streeter, Barrett, Batchelor and Burley were inducted posthumously and their awards were accepted by family members.

Butcher said he was shocked by his induction.

"Just to be mentioned alongside the other inductees is a real honour,'' he said.

"Im very grateful that the Maffra Football Club has allowed me and my family to be part of its history.

"With my boys (John and Danny) coming through and playing football, I hope to be contributing to the club for many more years.''

John will go top 3.

One of the best kicks for goal I've seen coming through the Under 18's.

Attibutes:

*One on One marking elite
*Goal Kicking elite
*Agility for 197cm Ok
*Speed for 197cm Avg

He's probably a better mark and kick than Jack Watts was but Watts work around the ground is twice as good as Butchers. Butcher is actually very similar to Vickory but more not as quick and maybe a better kick for goal.

It's so tough to pick Key position players and there expectations.

Vickory is harshly judged, he's gone from dominating against his age group and bullying boys around to playing the VFL against nuggety and well built men. Hugh step, leave him to develop.

Butcher will be good player, I'm nervous as I see contrasts to Josh Fraser. Pick 1 or 2 it may come back to haunt you but if he hasn't been picked up in top 5 he's a steal.

The only problem with this is that his goal kicking was crap at the start of last year, but all of a sudden improved massively in the 2nd half of the season. This year he's started off kicking crap again, with ok agility and avg speed, he'd want to start improving his conversion again.

I've always wondered about the effect of a preseason on forwards goal kicking (at all levels), putting on extra weight will always affect your movement and it wouldn't surprise me if it required a bit of adjustment to get used to the new bulk.

Butcher has kicked 16.6 from 5 games this year including bags of 6.1 and 5.1

Under 18's TAC Cup last year Watts stood out in numerous ways compared to Butcher. Butcher was bottom age though.

Watts presented more and has a quicker turning circle than Butcher which was evident when he played up the ground.
Honestly One on One Butcher probably is a tad better than Watts as there kicking was resemble the same. Butcher has his moments where his kicking goes missing.

The underlying part of the game where Watts is streets above Butcher is when the ball hits the ground. Watts is quick for a big guy and his ball to foot speed is alot quicker than Butcher. If the ball hits the ground Watts has the uncanny ability to rove it and snap a goal. Butcher at TAC level was too slow to do so.

As we all know anything could happen from here.

Another Butcher positive is that he has great ruck skills which he normally does when the ball is in the F50 where as Watts isn't big enough to do the same.

I'm involved with another Under 18 club so when ever we play him.

Watched closely at the TAC Cup last year.

Thats all I'm basing it off.

Just an opinion. Do you disagree?
