Round 8 Match Report
COBURG TIGERS v WERRIBEE TIGERS
ABD GROUP STADIUM
SUNDAY 31ST MAY
By Glenn Robertson
Coburg returned home to ABD Group Stadium this week to take on the Werribee Tigers on Sunday. The Burgers have been very hard to beat at home this year and went into the game as solid favourites. Jack Riewoldt who had kicked twelve goals in the previous two weeks returned to the Richmond side, however the Burgers side was still heaving with a bundle of Richmond listed players.
Contrary to previous weeks the Burgers had their kicking boots on early and were exceptionally accurate in front of goal, converting almost every set shot they had.
At the main break both sides had a similar amount of scoring shots but the Burgers had a near unassailable lead. Jay Schultz was the standout player for the Burgers kicking eight majors, as the boys ran away with a 58 point victory.
Coburg got on top of Werribee early thanks to the great run out of defence and through the midfield from Jake King and Jordan McMahon. Both men are experienced players and their use of the ball moving forward was excellent. Werribee managed to slot through three majors for the term, but the Burgers mustered six of their own and went into the first break with a 19 point margin in their favour.
¼ Time: Coburg Tigers 6.4 (40) Werribee 3.3 (21)
The Burgers turned it up a notch in the second quarter kicking an extremely accurate seven goals one behind for the quarter. Werribee on the other hand were atrocious in kicking for goals converting only three majors from the eleven shots on goal for the quarter. Coburg’s great defensive pressure was a key to Werribee’s inaccurate quarter. Shane Edwards shone in the second term with his explosive speed allowing him to break free from the stoppages, he also finished with two majors. The Burgers held a decisive 37 point lead at the main change.
½ Time: Coburg Tigers 13.5 (83) Werribee 6.10 (46)
The speed of play dropped a little during the third term, with Werribee able to hold the ball up for small periods during the quarter. Never the less Coburg made the most of their scoring opportunities when they controlled the ball and outscored the Werribee side again to take a nine goal margin into the final break. Jay Schultz was clearly the best player on the ground. Not only did he finish with eight majors but his marking was outstanding. Each big grab caused for a large roar form the home fans.
¾ Time: Coburg Tigers 17.8 (110) Werribee 9.11 (65)
The result was clearly beyond doubt in the final term, and it showed by the way both sides just went through the motions to finish off the match. Tim Clarke was again instrumental winning the hard ball at the stoppages, while the return of Mark Coughlan also strengthened the Burgers midfield. Coburg added another three goals in the last quarter and eventuated comfortable 58 point winners. It was the Burgers their win on the trot and elevates them to third spot on the ladder with a very healthy percentage. This Sunday the Burgers meet North Ballarat at the Northern Oval starting at 2.00pm, with the reserves at 11.10am.
