I think this process is actually quite professional or going about a process is quite professional but in all seriousness if Malthouse is available he would almost be unbeatable. Coaches like Malthouse IMHO dont need to go through a process. Bulldogs - successful at a club with no resources, West Coast- 2 premierships, Collingwood- shocking list and 2 grand finals- one of which they were unlucky to lose. Malthouse is a gun coach.

RICHMOND is preparing to make an official move for unsigned Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse.

As interviews begin this week at Punt Rd for as many as 15 candidates, which could include Nathan Buckley, the Tigers will add Malthouse to their list of potential senior coaches if Collingwood has not made an announcement within two weeks.

Tigers officials have not contacted Malthouse or his manager Peter Sidwell.

But the drawn-out and uncertain process at Collingwood has prompted the Tigers to ascertain the possibility of Malthouse shifting camps, although they don't hold high hopes.

Richmond president Gary March last night did not dismiss the Tigers making a play for Malthouse.

"You'd have to ask Craig Cameron. He is in charge of that process," March said.

Cameron, the club's general manager of football and head of the coaching sub-committee, has not commented on the selection process or list of candidates.

"If anyone would be making an approach, Craig is heading up that and I would expect him to do it," March said.

"Our imprimatur to Craig is we would like the best available people to apply for the job and go through the process if they are available. So I would expect him to seek out any prospective coaches."

Buckley confirmed on 3AW last night he was talking to Richmond and North Melbourne about coaching in 2010, which included meeting North representatives four times in the past month.

March said candidates would be interviewed this week and the Tigers were not in competition with the Kangaroos.

"We know exactly what we want to do. I've got no idea what they're doing, but we're starting interviewing this week," March said.

Richmond refused to rule out its former premiership defender as a coaching option, despite Malthouse remaining odds-on to get a contract extension from the Magpies.

Tigers president Gary March confirmed in a television interview last night that the club might make a direct approach to a potential coach, even if they had not applied for the senior coaching position.

"Craig Cameron has gone on record to say that we may tap someone on the shoulder or give them a phone call if they didn't put in a formal application," said March.

The Tigers are adamant they will not abandon the strict process put in place in its search to replace Terry Wallace, and March confirmed that if the club were to enter formal discussions with Malthouse then the Collingwood coach would be required to go through the interview process.

Richmond, should Malthouse become available, would offer the successful veteran a three-year deal — longer than he would receive at the Magpies.

I am not quite sure about that. It has been obvious for weeks Mick will be staying at the Pies. Why they haven't signed him is the real issue IMHO. Cake and eat it too I would think with regard to Nathan B

Think about this tactically.  North put pressure on Buckley to sign and we would like the option of him being available when we interview.  We know that Buckley's preference would be senior coach at Collingwood.  So we sow some seeds of doubt in his mind by raising the Malthouse possibility now, as Eddie has already said they won't be making a decision for a few weeks.  Buckley sees the benefit to himself in waiting, we keep Buckley available for our process, all the while knowing that Malthouse is going to re-sign with Collingwood.  It's all about positioning yourself behind the scenes in this type of scenario.

I certainly don't think it's that much of a long shot. Collingwood appear to be planning for Malthouse to be replaced in 2 years, meaning even if he does resign, he'll be looking for a job after this next contract. However if he goes to Richmond now, he'll have a young list to work with, some low draft picks, a longer term contract immediately and unless there's some disaster, you'd expect at least one contract renewal, especially as our kids mature and improve.

While I'm not 100% sold on Malthouse given he hasn't won a flag in 15 years, I think the best thing that would happen from his appointment is that we would also attract some very talented assistant coaches who he would bring with him, or would want to work under him.

I think smokey, you could be well on the money. All smoke and mirrors these rumours and innuendos. Malthouse will more than likely be resigned with the Wobbles but, if there is even a hint of truth behind the 'warming the seat for two years' senerio then we could be in for a shot with Micky.

For that reason, Mick or Bucks would be a good choice. As has been said before, Bucks holds no love for the club and so wouldn't be concerned with upsetting the apple cart a bit and Mick seems like the sort of coach who simply wouldn't take crap or accept anything less than 100% effort.

I'm someone who believes we need a younger coach who can connect with our young list rather than us being a retirement home for legendary coaches who are on the wrong side of their prime. I'd rather spend the savings between their respective salaries in recruiting and player development. So I'd prefer the Club just focuses on the process with these younger coaches. Do we also want a side that crabs along the boundary?!
