Thoughts on why we are accumulating draft picks for next year?

Reckon we don’t rate this years draft and or we are banking picks for a shot at someone next year

We also traded a pick we weren't going to be using (#54) for Essendon's future 4th rounder.

So, in total for next year we've got:

Our own 1st.
Our own 2nd.
Freo's 2nd.
Our own 3rd.
Eagles' 3rd.
Freo's 3rd.
Our own 4th.
Essendon's 4th.
Port's 4th.

Unless we require points for an academy player which I'm not sure we have an academy do we? What's the point in stocking dead picks in the 3rr and 4th rounds?

A quick Google search and we do have an academy so next year is 6 3rd and 4th rounds picks for an academy player I guess.

Looking up the points from this link
https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/draft/afl-draft-2023-points-bidding-system-explained-draft-value-index-fatherson-and-academy-nominees-prospects-bids-in-first-round-news/news-story/d390940551d4cadd17024170a1ffa4bc

At a guess 3*360 + 3*110 approx but it will be less is about 1400 PTS approx equal to pick 10. That's not a bad spare pick.

Can't match a bid on an academy player before pick 40 so if they're that good we wouldn't be getting them anyway.... :shh

1 man’s trash is another man’s treasure. A bunch of 3rd and 4th round picks could be flipped into quite a decent pick. All of that for moving down a couple of places with late picks when we probably got the players we intended to anyway.

Agreed.

Lots of points to play with.

If another club like GCS needs to accumulate for academy then we will have lots of currency to trade up.

Could end up with 2 top 10 picks and 2 30-40 range.

Matt Clarke post-draft said we had some intel that we knew we'd still get the same kids we wanted despite trading back in the draft. Doing these trades has strengthened our draft hand for next year as we know clubs will be seeking to match points for father-son and academy players. Hopefully that will give us the opportunity to get right up into the front end of the 2024 draft.

Seems some clubs are kicking up a stink about that and are going thr AFL. Eagles in particular seem to be fuming at the advantages the North Eastern states are getting around their academy players
