Nankervis cleared by the MRP (afl site)
« Reply #795 on: July 17, 2022, 06:50:30 PM »
No case to answer from the MRP.

Incident explained:

The match day report laid against Richmond's Toby Nankervis for contact against North Melbourne's Flynn Perez from the first quarter of Saturday's match between North Melbourne and Richmond was assessed. It was the view of the Match Review Officer that Nankervis' actions did not constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Just goes to show that ( some) umpires have him in the gun! The tribunal don’t throw them out unless there is nothing to see.

In saying that Nank needs a way to complete strongly without the half a dozen frees per game. (Coaching)

Hes an undersized ruckman as far as height goes. He makes up for it with aggression and strength long may that last. Every one in his area knows he is about and he makes our players walk taller. if he gives away some free kicks so be it.
What id like more from him is a few more marks around the ground and maybe a goal a game sneaking fwd.Make them be accountable to him he sure as hell does his bit when the ball hits the deck.

You can still play hard and protect players without giving so may frees away, frees are costing games.
Falling into and lying on someone’s back doesn’t add alot .

He gave away 6 free kicks and 2 were dodgy frees straight after he was dodgily reported so there is three of em.

He was huge and with out him we would never have had a chance imo.
FMD what more do you want from him 36 hit outs, 20 disposals 4 marks, 5 clearances sheesh, 2 tackles 8 score involvments and 7 inside 50s.
He is a physical ruckman and you dont just turn it on like a tap. Long may he play at the limits.

1st half was very very poor by both captains lowering their standards they’ve both set over the years.

Terrible example to the rest of the team.

Both were better in the second half but the damage was already done.

They need to learn to lead the team by doing courageous team things like our previous captain and the team will follow.
The club that keeps giving.

Agree , today’s  game doesn’t allow for any thuggish acts . Other captains have been courageous and protective without giving  the most free kicks in the whole league. I love his effort , he just need to play smarter.
The coaches should be able help him turn players when he tackles them instead of lying on them.

Is 'Being Toby Nankervis' a free kick against these days?

'Being Marlion Pickett' seems to be grounds for 50 mtrs.

We may as well just pay a free against for 'Being a Richmond player'!

What is the meaning of 'unbiased'?   Has it changed lately?

They were into him all day.  Those frees in the middle had me gobsmacked for a start, then when they reported him I thought they had been worded up to get into him.  Put him right off of his game.

Immediately after the report (IIRC) North scored a goal and it went back to the middle. The umps then seemed vindictive and immediately 'found' a free kick against him at the next center bounce. I remember thinking they were a bunch of Immanuel idiots because their vindictiveness was so bloody transparent. They think they're above the fray, umpires, but they're just as simple as every other human on the planet.

'He gets treated harshly': Dimma wants umps to give Nank a fair go

Richmond has spoken with the AFL umpires' department after what the Tigers believe has been unfair treatment of ruckman Toby Nankervis

By AAP
20 July 2022

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has called on umpires to give Toby Nankervis a fair go, claiming the premiership ruckman is being treated harshly by whistleblowers.

Nankervis gave away a game-high six free kicks in last week's upset loss to North Melbourne, which left the Tigers precariously placed in eighth spot.

The triple-premiership big man did not receive a single whistle his way, and was also reported over contact with the Kangaroos' Flynn Perez.

The report was later thrown out by the AFL's Match Review Officer.

Nankervis is on the wrong end of a 22-49 free-kick count this season, which includes a 1-13 tally over the last four weeks.

Hardwick said the Tigers took their gripes to the AFL umpiring department this week.

"The fact of the matter is Toby gives away a free kick and sometimes the opposition don't," Hardwick said on Wednesday.

"The same thing happens from time to time.

"We look at players walking across the line every time during the round and there's 50 of those a game, and Toby got pinged for three of them.

"We spoke to the umpiring department about that and hopefully we've got a better result this week.

"At the end of the day, they (the AFL) accept mistakes are made, like we do as coaches as well.

"Toby gets done for a report and a 50-metre penalty that gets withdrawn ... you know, he gets treated harshly."

Nankervis faces a huge battle against rising Fremantle ruck force Sean Darcy at Marvel Stadium on Friday night in a contest that will help shape both sides' finals prospects.

Agree. Plus free kicks given in the middle at Marvel are killers.
