Suns all but certain to accept Lynch compo pick

The Suns have until about 1.30pm Monday (AEST) to decide whether to match Richmond's offer for Tom Lynch.

Gold Coast has been tightlipped about its next move, saying only that it will weigh up its options between now and the deadline.

Are the Suns simply posturing by not jumping at the No.3 draft pick that will come their way if Lynch joins the Tigers as a restricted free agent?

Possibly, but it's understood any decision they make will have to be ticked off by their board, a process that takes time.

Nonetheless, it's hard to see what they would achieve by matching the Tigers' offer.

Surely, the Suns have long since abandoned any hope of convincing Lynch to stay, while they won't get a better deal if they try to force Richmond to trade for the spearhead.

Their only other motive for matching Richmond's offer would be to force their former co-captain into the NAB AFL Draft. It's hard to see the Suns being that ruthless, especially when doing so would mean they forfeit their right to any compensation.

So look for the Suns to accept the compensation pick, take picks No.2 and No.3 to this year's draft and then bank on their ability to sell the youngsters they select on the club's long-term vision.

Half-price Tiger: details revealed on Tom Lynch's backloaded deal

Jake Niall
The Age
6 Oct 2018

Free agent key forward Tom Lynch has agreed to a heavily backloaded seven-year deal worth close to $6.5 million.

Lynch will be playing at Richmond for the next three years at close to half of his 2018 contract with Gold Coast in the deal lodged with the AFL on the opening day of the free-agency period. Lynch received more than $1 million this year with the Suns.

It is understood that Lynch will be paid in the vicinity of $500,000 for 2019, 2020 and 2021 as the Tigers manoeuvre their salary cap to cover their elite incoming star and the likes of established guns Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt, Alex Rance and Trent Cotchin.

The Lynch deal is about $920,000-$930,000 a year over the seven years, meaning there is a significant rise after the first years. He is expected to earn as much as $1.5 million in the final year of the deal.

Fairfax Media believes that Hawthorn’s offer for the former Sun captain was greater on an annual basis than that offered by the Tigers.

Under the rules Gold Coast have three days to match the seven-year term and force the Tigers into a trade, but this possibility can be ruled out. The Suns will accept the compensation of pick No. 3, which could be used on either Izak Rankine or fellow South Australian Jack Lokosius or another highly rated teen in the draft pool.

The Suns will have picks two and three, potentially giving them access to Lukosius and Rankine or the King brothers, Max and Ben.

The seven-year deal for Lynch, who turns 26 at the end of this month, matches the length of term that champion Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin secured last year when he was a free agent, although Martin’s wage is significantly higher at close to $1.2 million a season.

The long-term deal allows the Tigers to spread out the payments, thus retaining key players. Reece Conca yesterday signed to switch to Fremantle as a free agent. Corey Ellis and Anthony Miles are set to join the Suns and Tyson Stengle wants to join Adelaide. Jacob Townsend’s position is up in the air.

2019: $500,000 26 y.o
2020: $500,000 27 y.o
2021: $500,000 28 y.o
2022: $1,100,000 29 y.o
2023: $1,100,000 30 y.o
2024: $1,100,000 31 y.o
2025: $1,500,000 32 y.o

7 years for $6,300,000

anyone think that’s A LOT for a 30 y.o key forward with a history of having a PCL reconstruction?

especially considering hes 25 and not 30......

you cant look at his salary in his latter years in isolation have to look at it over the entire contract. The way they structure it just depends on list strategy.

The fact that hes coming to us on 900k a year and turned down from reports 1.1mill a year from the pies, 1.4mill a year from the hawks and 1.5mill a year from the suns says it all.

Did torch reeally think we gave a 7-year, 6.3 million dollar contract to a 30 year-old? :shh

Well said.
Tom has earned a heap of respect before even walking in the door IMO.

I am so looking forward to being there for his first game in Yellow and Black.
This is such a coup. Picking up a super star player for nothing.

The Suns have until Monday to read through the offer made by the Tigers and are keen to ensure that snagging another free agent – like Geelong's George Horlin-Smith – won't affect their expected compensation of pick No.3 in the NAB AFL Draft.
