Tigers won't ride 'emotional rollercoasters' despite win over Collingwood, says Hardwick

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has praised his club's resilience and determination to stay the course after a memorable win that will ease pressure at Punt Road Oval.

With their season moving into dangerous territory at 2-4, the Tigers responded with one of their best wins under Hardwick, beating Collingwood by five points in a thriller at the MCG.

Pre-game, Hardwick received the backing of president Peggy O'Neal, who said the club did not make "reactive decisions based on the latest view in the media or in the vocal minority".

The coach, who is contracted to the end of 2016, said the support of O'Neal and the club's entire leadership structure had been "really important" for him this season.

"That's why she's our president … she doesn't say a lot, but she says incredibly smart things," he said.

"People always say they have the support of the board, but [that's] the great thing about our organisation now.

"Our club speaks about not riding emotional rollercoasters, from a president, to a CEO, to a senior coach, to our leadership group.

"The maturity of our organisation now has moved on."

Hardwick praised an "unbelievable" performance from captain Trent Cotchin on Sunday and said it was the team's leaders who stood up and changed the game when Collingwood built momentum in the third quarter.

He also explained his surprise early coaching moves that had second-game defender Todd Elton manning Collingwood star Travis Cloke, and key defender Alex Rance playing in the midfield.

Rance would finish the match on Cloke, but Hardwick said he had been keen to look at his All Australian backman in a new role.

"My wife all week was bugging me about it, saying ‘what are you doing’ (but) it's something we thought we'd trial and see how it went," he said.

"We feel at stages we've needed that big-bodied midfielder through there and Alex does present that.

"(But) fair to say it's probably not an experiment we'll be replicating next week."

With his team falling victim to concentration lapses and skill errors this season, Hardwick said he was pleased his players didn't drop their heads when they let a 24-point lead slip in the third quarter.

He praised his youngsters, including midfielder Corey Ellis, substitute Connor Menadue and debutant Liam McBean, who finished with seven possessions and two marks but attacked the contest.

"Liam presented really well, he probably didn't get used a couple of times when he was open (but) he makes his way to smart places on the ground," Hardwick said.

"We're really pleased with the growth in those players.

"They probably played a little earlier than we would have liked, considering we have some injuries, but it's great for those players to experience an injury like that."

Hardwick said Ty Vickery, who took his chance with three important goals and five inside 50s, had shown his value to the team if he can perform at a consistent level.

"I was really happy for him," the coach said.

"I have no doubt he'll build on that game and show us the player we think he can be.

"It's going to be hopefully the start of something, if he continues to work hard."

Damien Hardwick full of praise for Trent Cotchin after skipper shows way in Tigers’ win over Collingwood

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has lauded the performance of captain Trent Cotchin who inspired his team to its best win of the season.

On the back of Cotchin’s 32-possession game, the Tigers recovered from a horror start to register a season-defining victory over Collingwood by five points.

“The great thing from my point of view was that Trent Cotchin’s game was unbelievable, he stood up where it was counted,” Hardwick said.

“He tried to come to the bench in the end but we sent him back on with four minutes to go and he willed us over the line. It was a great captain’s game.”

Hardwick said Cotchin had been unfairly criticised during the Tigers ordinary start to the year.

“I think what happens when you are losing games, the first people to cop it in the neck generally are your leaders from the media’s point of view,” he said.

“Trent by his own admission has had an OK start to the season but I think today is a game that really defines the value of him to our football team.

“He played a four-quarter performance and I think his last quarter stood up when we needed him most.

“He has improved enormously as a leader, he is 24 years of age and he’s only going to get better.”

Cotchin was assisted by the Tigers other big names with Brett Deledio (30 possessions and two final quarter goals), Dustin Martin (26 touches) and Jack Riewoldt (four goals) significant in the team’s third win of the season.

“They (leaders) took a lot of the meetings this week and demanded more of each other, to see them perform how they did today was really impressive,” Hardwick said.

The Tigers coach admitted he wouldn’t be repeating his controversial move of playing second-gamer Todd Elton on Magpies star Travis Cloke instead of Alex Rance who started in the midfield.

“My wife all week was bugging me about it, saying what are you doing?,” Hardwick said.

“It was something we thought we would trial and see how it went. Todd Elton has been playing some outstanding footy in defence in VFL side but you probably have to give it to Travis he has got too much experience for him at this stage.

“We feel at stages we have needed that bigger body midfielder through there and Alex does present that.

“We saw last week he probably provided something different that we haven’t seen but It’s fair to say it’s not an experiment we will be replicating next week.”

Before Sunday’s match Richmond president Peggy O’Neal threw her support behind Hardwick saying Tigers would not be “driven by emotional outbursts” despite a poor start to the season.

“We don’t make reactive decisions based on the latest view in the media or in the vocal minority,” O’Neal said.

Hardwick said the club had matured as an organisation under O’Neal’s reign.

“She doesn’t say a lot but she says incredibly smart things,” he said. “With good people around footy clubs, you make really good decisions.”

The Tigers return to the scene of last year’s finals debacle at Adelaide Oval to play an out-of-sorts Port Adelaide who on Sunday suffered a shock loss to Brisbane.

“We don’t want to get too carried away, it is a great win (today) against a good side there is no doubt about that,” Hardwick said.

“We have got Port Adelaide next week, they handed us a fair beating last year and we’re looking forward to the opportunity to go over there and provide a really good contest and see where we end up.”

Midfielder Shane Edwards was a late withdrawal against the Pies because of a corked calf but is expected to play against the Power.
