Star key forward Tom Lynch is on track to make a return early next year after enduring an injury-hit 2023 campaign.

Lynch spent most of last pre-season training away from the main group due to a plantar fascia issue before transitioning back into full training on the eve of the season.

The 31-year-old played the first four games of last season before missing the rest of the season with a broken foot that has taken longer than first thought to recover from.

Lynch trained indoors on a wet and windy Wednesday morning at the Swinburne Centre and won't start transitioning back into the main group until January at the earliest.

"He had a really tough run last season and right now he is ticking all the boxes, but really similar to Josh, we just need to temper how quick we get him back out there," Yze said.

"If it means he is not available at the start of the year then we've got to be really patient with that. I'm hoping he will be, but he is progressing and he will start to up the ante after Christmas.

"The scans and everything that he has been through, everything has been positive so far. Hopefully he can have a good year next year."

i think the club is desperate, no thanks to Luke and his amazing staff, and knows really if we are lucky we start seeing some of the old tom by May. At worst we may never see the old tom.

The Tigers are crying out for Tom Lynch’s return in 2024.

He had kicked nine goals in four games before he suffered a foot injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the 2023 campaign.

That completely scuppered Richmond’s forward plans which were to give veteran Jack Riewoldt regular rests in what was his swan-song season. With Lynch out of the team, Riewoldt was afforded no chop-out and forced to play as the big banana and. There wasn’t much coming through underneath him.

Lynch has kicked 202 goals in 85 games for the Tigers, returning 30 or more in four of his five seasons at the club, and also averages 2.2 contested marks in yellow and black.

If the Tigers are to show promise in Adem Yze’s first year at the helm, the presence of a dual premiership, All-Australian, multiple leading goal kicker and Jack Dyer Medallist will be paramount.

His presence is colossal.

Josh Gibcus is one Tiger who'll feel like a new recruit in 2024 after not playing at all this year, but there's no doubt Lynch is the man Richmond fans are desperate to get back on the park. Even when the Tigers were at their best in 2023, their lack of cohesion going forward proved to be a stumbling block as Jack Riewoldt attempted to lead the line on his own. And with Riewoldt's retirement, getting Lynch back to full fitness will be priority No.1 for new coach Adem Yze.

Key forward Tom Lynch is slowly working his way back into training, taking part in modified drills during a session in front of the Punt Rd faithful on Tuesday night.

Lynch was ruled out for the remainder of the 2023 season after injuring his foot against the Western Bulldogs in round four.

"It's been a long time for Tom and for anyone who has spent a long time in rehab it's pretty painful," Short said.

"But his attitude throughout the whole time has been second to none.

"Just rocking up every day with a smile, he's been amazing.

"It's good to see him back running and I'm looking forward to being able to kick it to him again."

As for Lynch, Newman revealed he’s slowly working his way back into training with the key forward rebuilding his fitness after seriously injuring his foot which restricted him to just four games in 2023.

While Lynch hasn’t returned to the main group just yet, Newman says the 31-year-old has been a big presence around the group this pre-season as he attacks his recovery.

“He’s going really well, I've loved Tom's presence around the group,” Newman said.

“He's got really strong leadership qualities and obviously he's held in high regard, he’s quite an experienced player.

“Sitting on the sidelines would have been really tough for him, especially when you know, that he can impact the way he can.

“He can impact games with his scoring ability and his contested aerial strength. He's ticking along really well.

“It's been a patient sort of build-up for him and he's in a really good place training.

“He’s ticking the boxes that need to be ticked right now. It was a bit of a milestone getting on the AlterG machine the other day and the players rallied around that, they love seeing him progress.

“He's trending in the right direction. We're hopeful but also treading carefully in terms of building him back to game-fit conditions.”
