2000-2001 Bombers Style OR be afraid, be very afraid!

We get criticised for our recruiting, check out the Bombers recruiting for these two years.  And remember it's only 6 or 7 years ago.  How dare they have a go at Wallace.  I'd be thinking long and hard before you think Kevin is the new Messiah.  Add to the fact that he loves recruiting players on their last legs or just plain losers Camporeale, Zantuck, Mal Michael and we may as well have Spud back  ::)

Please show this to all your friends who think we have to get rid of Wallace.  Although the damage may already have been done and let's hope Wallace doesn't leave and take that payout from Mr Mobile Phones  :banghead

You can even further Moi.

2002:
Walsh (pick 27), Cartledge (pick 28), Alessio (#67) are all gone as well as Cupido who they traded Caracella for.
Watson (F/S), Winderlich and Laycock are only just showing some signs this year (4 1/2 years later yet we're expecting our kids to be matchwinner after 2 1/2  ::) ).
McPhee did well initially but had a shocker last year (traded for pick 55 who Freo used to get Ryan Crowley).

2003:
Traded for Allan, Alvey and Murphy - all gone. As has rookie elevated Ben Haynes.
Got Stanton at 13 - successful pick up.
Bradley, Nash and Dyson have serious question marks.
Courtney Johns was also rookie elevated. Tipped to be the next big thing and we are still waiting.

2004:
Paul Thomas (pick 60) - gone
Monfries (14), Andrew Lee (30), Henry Slattery (46)
No trades (because no one would trade with Sheeds) or rookie elevations.

2005:
Ty Zantuck in the PSD - gone.
Ryder (6) - good so far. Looks like being a gun.
Courtenay Dempsey (19), Jay Neagle (F/S), Samuel Lonergan (50) - too early to tell (except if they are Richmond kids after 1 1/2 years  ::) )
Austin Lucy (66) - gone
No trades again.

Frightening actually  :o
Did they have a change of recruiting manager or something because just prior to '93 they did very well.
I think Sheed's reputation has lived off the Baby Bombers of that era, but hasn't done much since, and hasn't demonstrated that it wasn't a fluke.
He seems to get more of a kick about getting the first Asian, first Muslim, first fuzzy wuzzy than building a premiership list.
I'm scared  :help

Getting Lloyd, Lucas, both Johnsons, Barnard from Hawthorn, Wellman from Adelaide, etc in 1997-98 to add to baby bombers Hird, Fletcher, Mercuri and Misiti was Sheeds last recruiting achievement of note. He has struggled since with Dadoro (sp?) as Essendon's recruiting manager. Sheeds was ahead of the other clubs in terms of drafting and recruiting for a long time but now the draft is heavily scrutinised so that advantage is gone and he can't find hidden gems in Essendon's old local zone or the PSD either. His past history has also hurt him in trade week with most Clubs refusing to deal with Essendon. Look at the games he played last year when we were trying to get Polak via a 3-way deal with Freo and the Pies. He held up that trade for 2-3 days.

Sheeds should take up Andy D's offer and work for the AFL in some development and ambassador role.

I forgot about Sheeds getting Richie Cole from the Pies for an early second round pick (pick 17-20).

Interesting Peter Jackson on 3AW said they were going to implement a 3 to 5 year plan to rebuild (anyone heard a club doing this before?)
Why should they want to go down this path?
Because of the way their list was left.

Wonder if they'll get as much criticism as Wallace did for saying it will take 3 to 5 years.

Jack, the first two were Spud/Beck/Miller pick-ups not Wallace's. That's what pre-season 2004 means  ;).

Knobel, Matty White and Kingsley are Plough's PSD choices.

As Miller had a hand in the 2004 selections, thats why i listed them.
I recommended not to draft Knoble.
Watched him train all summer at Carlton

Given the imminent departure of Stafford wasn't it a good insurance policy to get Knobel at the time?
Don't think there were any other ruckmen going then.
We weren't to know he'd have the injury run he's had.
As it happens, if he hadn't have been injured this season that pick up would have been quite useful.
He's no champion, but could have been serviceable had he been injury-free!
So IMO wasn't a totally stupid pick up AT THE TIME!

TOTAL stupid pick up at the time.
Saints got rid of him due to injury and inability to get through a game.
Did complete pre-season at Carlton where he struggled and guess what, we pick him up ::) ::) ::)
