Insider reveals who's in Dustin Martin's inner circle as Tigers superstar gives a huge hint at his post-footy career and respected pundit says his move to the Swans 'is on'

Dustin Martin has launched a fitness app as he ponders life after footy.

Richmond superstar Dustin Martin's tightly knit inner circle has been revealed as speculation that he's bound for the Sydney Swans in 2023 reaches fever pitch.

Martin, who is notoriously private when it comes to the media, recently launched a fitness app, DRIP, alongside friends in his incredibly tight inner sanctum.

The 31-year-old superstar has had a tough 12 months during which he tragically lost his father, suffered a serious kidney injury and spent time away from the club for personal reasons - much of which was spent in NSW.

Many pundits and fans believe that is exactly where he will be living next year, with the Swans overwhelming favourites to land him.

Off the field, Martin has a very tight inner circle - but they've rallied around him to launch DRIP.

The app features a 'Team Dusty' stable of trainers include:

Montana Farrah-Seaton: a model, PT, boxing coach and former Australian under-19s basketball representative

Shai Bolton: Martin's two-time premiership-winning Richmond teammate

Andrew Nabbout: Socceroo and A-League player for Melbourne City

Emma Murray: Mindfulness coach who works with the Tigers

Bronii Gigliuto: Kinesiology and meditation practitioner who has also worked with the Tigers

Kat John: Authenticity and meditation coach

Dzhabar Askerov: Muay Thai champion

Tom Hislop: A former Richmond teammate of Martin's

Louise West: Martin's personal yoga coach

Farrah-Seaton, a prominent influencer with more than 76,000 Instagram followers, will need no introduction to many; she was runner-up at the 2018 Miss Globe pageant and is a common sight on runways and at fashion shoots.

Nabbout has represented the Socceroos on 10 occasions thus far, while Hislop, a strength specialist, was a teammate of Martin's for two years at Richmond.

Murray has worked with Martin for many years, helping him with his mindset, and she said earlier this year he was 'the most giving person and loyal person' and 'one of the most engaged athletes she had worked with'.

If Sydney can pair him up with Lance Franklin in 2023, look out. That mindset might be even more dangerous for hapless opponents.

Deja vu of blockbuster moves; Giant switch coming full circle? The $2.6m Dusty trade landscape

Ronny Lerner
Fox Sports
July 7th, 2022 4:35 pm

A question made famous by legendary English rockers The Clash (or at least a variation of it) is fast becoming one of the biggest talking points of the AFL season, and it concerns the future of Richmond superstar Dustin Martin.

The triple Norm Smith medallist might still be contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2024, but speculation continues to grow that he may not want to honour the remaining two years of that deal.

His future could lie up in Sydney if he chose to depart Richmond, and that would amount to some pretty handsome compensation for the Tigers if a trade of that magnitude occurred, not to mention the salary cap space that would be freed up.

As Fox Footy journalist Jon Ralph explained earlier this year, the Swans would have to stump up a lot to make a Martin trade happen.

“Sydney have two first-rounders, pick 10 and 18, (the latter) which is Melbourne’s first-round pick. They’ll look to pay ‘Buddy’ Franklin around $500,000, down from $900,000,” Ralph told Fox Footy.

“They’ve got expiring deals — Josh Kennedy, Callum Sinclair, Sam Reid, Lewis Taylor, Ben Ronke, Sam Naismith — they’ve got some cap space.

“But Martin is due $2.6 million in the next two years, he wouldn’t take less, the Richmond footy club wouldn’t pay him elsewhere. And so, if — and it’s a massive if — the Swans gave up two first-rounders, Richmond would have three first-rounders and a North Melbourne second-rounder, they could start to rebuild again.”

There would be a sense of deja vu if Martin ended up at the Swans, given that club’s incredible track record of attracting the biggest stars in the league.

Indeed, the 2017 Brownlow medallist would follow in the footsteps of Tony Lockett, Barry Hall and Lance Franklin as marquee attractions who were wooed by the siren song of the Harbour City.

But, of course, if Martin wanted to head north, his passage would be made easier due to the fact that there are two teams in Sydney to choose from these days.

If the three-time premiership champion ended up at Greater Western Sydney, it would be a case of the Giants coming full circle given they withdrew their interest in recruiting him at the end of 2013 after he famously toured their facilities along with manager Ralph Carr.

To see Martin in charcoal and orange almost a decade later would be a remarkable story and a great coup for GWS.

Besides, the Giants still owe their local rivals Sydney one after the Swans gazumped them at the death knock for Franklin’s signature in late 2013.

For all intents and purposes, Franklin appeared destined for a move from Hawthorn to the Giants ahead of the 2014 season, but stunned everyone, including AFL powerbrokers, when he joined Sydney instead on a whopping nine-year deal (which expires this year).

So enraged was the league, especially then-chairman Mike Fitzpatrick, by Franklin blindsiding them and snubbing their expansion baby in western Sydney that they slapped the Swans with a trading ban for two years.

Officially, the ban was linked to the controversial cost-of-living allowance, but many observers in the footy industry saw it as retribution for Sydney’s bold recruitment of both Franklin and Kurt Tippett.

But Jon Ralph believes the Giants would find it even more difficult to accommodate Martin than the Swans.

“GWS are on the record through their football boss Jason McCartney saying, ‘If Dustin’s interested, we are as well’,” Ralph said.

“(But) They already need to cut someone under their cap.

“They already have so many elite inside mids — Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly, Jacob Hopper, (Tim) Taranto, Tom Green, Tanner Bruhn — now you can make up the BigFooty-style trades, but again the salary cap is an even bigger issue there.”

However, foxfooty.com.aureported on Wednesday that Victorian clubs, including Richmond, are circling Taranto, who comes out of contract this year and has put off talks with the Giants.

That could definitely be a starting point for GWS if they were to seriously pursue a Martin trade.

But unlike Lockett (29), Franklin (27) and Hall (25), Martin (31) will be in his 30s if he starts a new chapter in the NSW capital.

Seeing him leave the Victorian AFL fishbowl wouldn’t be all that surprising. He could very well have got to a stage where the spotlight has become too much for him.

This year, in particular, has been extremely difficult for the Richmond living legend.

He had to deal with the death of his father, who Martin was very close with, and it was a situation made even tougher for Martin given his father was living in New Zealand.

After Martin played in the Tigers’ season opener against Carlton, he took personal leave away from the club, and serious question marks began to hang over his career.

He spent much of that time up in Sydney, a city he has come to love, and the main reason why speculation is linking him to either the Swans or Giants for next year.

Ultimately, he took what amounted to be a six-week break from football, and returned for Richmond‘s Round 8 win over Collingwood, accruing 23 touches and two goals to boot.

His form since returning hasn’t been too bad, but has been a few levels below his absolute best, which is understandable considering his best footy was some of the best footy any player has ever produced.

However, frustratingly for him, he injured his hamstring in the first half against West Coast on the weekend just as he looked like potentially returning to those dizzying heights of yesteryear with 17 disposals and a goal already to his name.

Of course, there’s also the very real prospect that Martin may stay with Richmond and see out his seven-year contract.

The Tigers might be seventh on the ladder heading into Round 17, but at their best this year, they still look like a team that could go deep into the finals, and perhaps even pinch a fourth flag in six years.

It could be argued that another premiership this year might in fact serve as the perfect swan song (excuse the pun) to Martin’s Richmond career and provide the impetus for him to start a new chapter north of the Murray.

But on the other hand, with Shai Bolton, Liam Baker, Noah Balta, Daniel Rioli, Jack Graham, Josh Gibcus, Jack Ross, Hugo Ralphsmith, Maurice Rioli Jr and Judson Clarke all on Richmond’s list and aged 25 or younger, Martin could see the potential for more success at Punt Road in the future, even if the Tigers fall short this year.

The 268-gamer certainly has a lot of thinking to do.

Richmond is staring down a ‘sad’ Dusty reality. But it would come with a huge trade silver lining

Ben Cotton
Fox Sports
July 8th, 2022 12:26 pm

What started off as football’s biggest rumour has now grown genuine traction.

Talk of a Dustin Martin trade heated up this week, with reporter Sam McClure revealing the Tigers superstar was “a very large chance” of leaving Richmond before veteran journalist Caroline Wilson suggested the triple Norm Smith medallist’s move to Sydney “is on”.

It comes after Martin earlier this year took personal leave from Punt Road as he dealt with the death of his father, Shane. Part of that time away saw him spend time in News South Wales.

The possible bombshell trade request wouldn’t come as a huge shock. Martin has long preferred to shy away from the limelight, so a move north to NRL-centric Sydney would make sense.

But he’s also contracted at Richmond for two more seasons with a reported salary of around $2.4 million, which would no doubt be a key factor in the club’s thinking.

The thought of Martin playing out his career at any other team would’ve been unthinkable for all Richmond people at one stage, considering there’s still a touch of sentimentalism in football with clubs indebted to its champions compared to other codes.

But could there be a silver lining to a potential Martin departure if it helped the Tigers mitigate a tight salary cap with several other key players out of contract?

“It’d be a sad thing for people at Richmond, because wouldn’t you love Dustin Martin to be a one-club player, because of the champion he’s been for the club,” Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd said on Channel 9’s Footy Classified.

“But I think if it does happen, it’s not the worst thing for Richmond. Dustin’s just turned 31, he’s on $1.2m to $1.4m a season — that’s a lot of money at his age.”

The Tigers in 2013 nearly lost Martin to the Giants. If he’d left, he would’ve left a considerable void and potentially drastically changed the fate of the competition in recent years.

This time, things are very different.

Richmond’s resurgence of form in 2022 has heaped financial pressure on the club, with several players that are out of contract due for hefty pay rises.

Arguably the most important signature is Liam Baker’s.

The versatile 24-year old, who’s in the middle of a breakout campaign, has been linked to a possible move back to Western Australia, with West Coast particularly interested. And the fact Baker is yet to recommit to the Tigers should create some form of cause for concern.

Baker’s flexibility and capacity to play in different areas on the ground has proven to be a valuable asset for the Tigers in 2022. He now surely commands a bigger payday on his next deal — even coach Damien Hardwick urged his club to “pay the man”.

Dual premiership Kangaroo David King suggested Baker, along with Shai Bolton and Jayden Short, had taken over the mantle as the Tigers’ most important players, telling Fox Footy’s First Crack last month: “It’s Baker, Bolton and Short now that really drive this Richmond machine.

“The baton’s passed from (Trent) Cotchin, (Jack) Riewoldt, (Dustin) Martin and these guys to those three – and they’re grabbing it with both hands.”

As bizarre as it may sound, retaining Baker is arguably more important to Richmond than keeping Martin as the club ushers in a new era while aiming to stay in contention in the coming years.

Daniel Rioli has also jacked up his value after revitalising his career across halfback, while Nathan Broad and Marlion Pickett’s deals are also set to expire soon.

Then there’s the uncertain fate of veterans Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin, Kane Lambert and Shane Edwards, who’re all uncontracted for 2023.

But as King highlighted, it’s been Short, Bolton, Baker, Tom Lynch, Nick Vlastuin and Jack Graham that have driven this Tigers side back into contention this year, rather than the trusty champions that helped deliver the club three flags between 2017 and 2020.

If the club prioritises those players, it means it does everything in its power to lock away the likes of Baker and Rioli while also giving it the option to be active in the trade and free agency markets. Rival stars such as Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper that are either in their prime or close to it could be targeted.

Martin is right up there on both the AFL’s and Richmond’s Mount Rushmore of greats. But with all that in mind, perhaps Martin’s signature isn’t as critical to the Tigers’ fortunes as it once seemed.

On his day, the 268-gamer is still as breathtaking as any player. But there have been signs over the past couple of years he’s no longer the superstar he once was. And a hamstring setback last weekend suggested the Martin’s body perhaps isn’t as durable as it used to be — although that’s not say to say he won’t be an influential player for several more years.

Whether he’s playing for Richmond, Sydney or another club in 2023, Martin will draw fans to AFL venues and TV screens.

But should Martin — the initial face of Richmond’s resurrection to powerhouse — want out, the Tigers will need to seriously consider what really is best for the club.

Dimma's comments about Dusty in his presser:

Journo: Has the Dusty stuff been a distraction this week? Have you had to talk about it internally?

Dimma: No, not really. It's the narrative that's out there. From our point of view, he's very much a Richmond player contracted for two more years. One of our favourite sons, if not our favourite son. He's up here with us spending some time with us as well. So for us it's not distraction. It's just part and parcel of the industry we are in.

Journo: Would you like a decision before year's end?

Dimma: Like I said he's contracted for the next two years. So a Richmond player!

Have they talked to Dusty about a training role? Would fit in nicely with his new fitness business.

Dustin Martin has vindicated the gamble of following Richmond. He owes us nothing more

A potential move to Sydney will be neither unexpected nor totally devastating for Tigers fans

Tim McGlone
The Guardian Australia
Sat 9 Jul 2022

How do you write about a person you’ve never met, but whose proficiency at their job has largely dictated your moods between March and September for the last 12 years?

Being a football fan is like gambling a little of your own happiness each week on a group of men or women you’ve never met before, but who happen to be wearing your chosen or inherited colours. It is an absurd thing to do. It must be difficult and frustrating for non-football followers to understand the clamour surrounding a game, a premiership and indeed a footballer.

I should divulge at this point that I am a diehard, unashamedly one-eyed Richmond supporter, from a family where a family outing as a kid generally meant a trip up the Calder Highway to see the Tigers play.

In this sense we were, and are, heavy gamblers, so to speak. And in the early days, we were losing like we were playing the pokies. These were largely through the Terry Wallace years and the less successful second half of Danny Frawley’s tenure. It was a time when the word Richmond was synonymous with ninth place and frustration, when supporters spat on the coach, dumped truckloads of chicken manure at Punt Road and worshipped Richo one week before booing him the next.

I was there when Dustin Martin made his debut against Carlton in round one in 2010, when he was largely anonymous except for his high draft position. I had heard rumours of this guy from nearby Castlemaine, who had thighs like tree-trunks and a bikie for a dad.

I was there when he won Richmond a game off his own boot for the first time, against a mediocre Melbourne-side in 2011, a tiny crowd watching on in a cavernous MCG.

I had flown back from Munich days earlier to be there when that same, previously cavernous ground was packed with over 100,000 people, as he, Bachar Houli and a supporting cast of 20 triggered a first flag in 37 years, and pandemonium on Swan Street.

I was at a pub in 2020 when a pandemic kept us rooted to our home state, as he carried Richmond to another flag, providing our supporters a glimmer of light in an otherwise difficult year.

These latter two in particular qualify as great memories. But if he does move to Sydney later this year, as has been reported, it is the week-by-week joys that I will miss most; the water cooler chat, nonsensical pub glorification and phone calls to Dad regarding what superhuman feats this delicately skilled brute would accomplish next.

Seeing him fend off another tackle or kick yet another clutch goal never got old. They were fixtures of my life in winter that provided a small, external moment of joy. We are fortunate in this country in that so much of our own destiny and happiness is within our control. Sometimes it is nice to leave it to someone else.

And while creating a winning football team must surely take a village – of coaches and physios in tracksuits, office people in suits, full-forwards and ruckmen in short shorts – we are obsessed with diluting it down to one or a few as the chosen ones with whom our fortunes lie. And there has never been a bigger chosen one at Richmond than Dusty. They say that no athlete is a bigger than their team, but it doesn’t feel like that. He has about 50,000 more followers than the club he plays for, for example.

To those who wonder how people become so invested in a sporting team, Martin is a case study in the affirmative, the justification for sitting there in the rain until the final siren during the Wallace years. Or spending more money than we’d like to imagine on fuel, tickets and grossly overpriced beer.

As has been well documented, Martin’s aloofness and complete aversion to the spotlight has only enhanced his legend over the years. People are interested in people who aren’t interested. It is this personality trait that might be what leads him to Sydney.

“What he gives us, he’s paid us in spades,” said Richmond’s coach Damian Hardwick earlier this year. “Whatever Dustin’s decision is moving forward is up to Dustin and to be honest, he has my blessing.” It is a view that is likely consistent with the majority of Richmond’s fanbase.

If an eventual move to one of the Sydney teams next year does take place, it will not be unexpected. But given the vindication he has already given many of us who have spent a lifetime gambling on a football team for a small level of happiness each week, nor is it completely devastating.

Swans say they've had no conversations with Dusty (ABC/Fox)

SWANS SAY THEY’VE HAD ‘NO CONVERSATIONS’ WITH DUSTY

Sydney has downplayed links to Tigers superstar Dustin Martin, with Swans CEO Tom Harley insisting “there has been no conversations with Dustin.”

Speaking on ABC radio, Harley said there hadn’t yet been any communication between the club and the 31-year old.

“The level is interest is absolutely generated through media. I can unequivocally say there has been no conversations with Dustin and at the same time we appreciate the speculation,” Harley said on ABC Sport.

“But from our point of view we certainly don’t deal in hypotheticals and I can say there has been no conversations.”

Asked by reporter for an update on his future while going for scans on his injured hamstring this week, Martin gave no response.

As Martin is contracted at the Tigers for two more seasons for a lucrative total of $2.6 million he’d need to be acquired via trade.
