Backline - what's going on?
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:14:34 PM »
Seriously, what the hell is going through the heads of these blokes?  Luke gave away 5 free kicks.  Thursty is mismatched against little blokes and the rest of our boys are mids who do a fair to middling job.  Can't blame newies like Webbo and Farms, but there's serious problems down there.

Who was the brain surgeon who contracted McGuane until 2012?

The backline will look very different this time next year no doubt but we still dont have an answer for blokes like milne and rioli, its a yawning gap in the side somone like hislop or thompson should be working to fill,, maybe when our midfield depth improves jackson could move there?

forgot about those 2 mate, they are terrible especially the latter

watched Thompson yesterday and as i thought all along he is a hack of the highest order.

gee i dont know what the tanned one was thinking actually yes i do nothing as usual.

In all seriousness after watching Kings last fortnight and if he keeps this up for the rest of the year, i would put him on for another year.
His kicking has improved and he is turning into a little Carazzo type that can shut down players.

Big problem that small defender and watching Thursfield stand Milne on Friday was embrassing. Bad move that one.

5 frees? I can remember only 2
I watched the again on Fox and that free against Mcguane in the goal square was a laughable umpiring decision. Mcguane played well and he killed Kosi. I'm waiting for Post to come in and play CHB and left there for a few weeks. We've been missing Connors too. Not interested in playing Moore because too often he's used as a tall. Too short. I'd prefer Connors, Newman, Tambling and Deledio as smalls too

Kosi was pretty much underdone and out of form, but he still led luke to the ball most of the time.

problem with Mcguane is he plays 1 okay game then 3 bad ones.

Dont rate him at all. Moore is so much of a player than Mcguane will ever be.

When McGuane has the ball I break out in a nervous sweat.  Thankfully he doesn't get it much.

everyone is desperately searching for a small defender to play on small forwards like milne.
me im looking for bigger players to play on the milnes and perform other roles if need be.

structurally geelong do not have a small defender.
they go with
taylor 193/93
hunt 185/100
kelly 183/88
enright 187/91
mackie 192/87
scarlett 192/94
lonergan 197/99
milburn 189/92
wojcinski 180/80  at times the only one you could consider a small.
sometimes corey sometimes rooke  both tall and big bodied.

last yr they regularly went with scarlett harley 193/95  taylor mackie kelly and enright.  lets learn from the best. big strong solid skillful cohesive.

At the moment our best defender is Moore. Will is having an okay season. Luke should only be playing on the other side's third forward option. We need a centre half back not a small defender. Geelong have succeeded because they have Taylor and Scarlett, a centre half back and a full back.

Spot On- 100% correct IMHO.

We dont have either a class Full Back or a class Centre Half Back. We need One at least!

The two glaring holes we have in defence are a tall/strong defender and a shut down small.
Both of these players also need to be able to create as well as nullify their opponent.

It's likely IMO that at year's end that one or even two of Thursfield, McGuane or Rance will be moved on as we have an excess of third tall defenders and none of these players are very good with the football in hand which is a necessity in the modern game.

We also need to find a small back who can on the small forwards.
Milne is the benchmark and once again he carved us a new one. Been a problem for years.
King & Farmer(so far) haven't shown that they are capable of this role.
Newman not quick/tight enough and better on taller forwards.
Edwards I see as more of a forward.
Would like to see Richie tried back there but not convinced he's the answer either.

A Damien Hardwick type would be nice..
