Traffic will be brought to a virtual standstill in Melbourne's inner south-east this weekend when one of the city's busiest roads is closed off for tram works.

Drivers around Armadale, Caulfield North, Malvern and Toorak have been warned to expect delays of about an hour as Dandenong Road is reduced from four lanes to one outbound. Part of Wattletree Road in Armadale will also be closed for the weekend.

The lanes will be closed from 8pm Friday until late Sunday.

VicRoads director of road operations Dean Zabrieszach said congestion would be severe on other nearby main roads as well. He said the best thing drivers could do to avoid getting stuck in traffic was stay away from the area completely.
