Dons' dream ends badly: Tigers spoil Fletch's big night

RICHMOND'S resurgence has continued in a hard-fought 13-point win over Essendon, with the Tigers spoiling Dustin Fletcher's 400-game milestone celebrations in the Dreamtime at the 'G clash on Saturday night.

After a scrappy start, the Indigenous Round's showpiece game lived up to the pre-game hype, with the Tigers (5-4) withstanding the Bombers' inspired second-half fightback to secure their third-straight win and keep hold of eighth spot on the ladder.

Despite their refusal to give in, more questions will be asked about the Dons' (4-5) finals credentials after the 10.12 (72) to 8.11 (59) defeat.

This was Essendon's third loss from the past four games, and fourth defeat to a fellow finals contender since their shock round-two triumph over Hawthorn.

James Hird's outfit has slipped to 10th on the ladder ahead of a critical clash with Geelong in round nine.

Richmond, on the other hand, should take some confidence into a Friday night clash with Fremantle at Domain Stadium before their bye.

Led by skipper Trent Cotchin (two goals), in-form midfielder Shane Edwards, Brandon Ellis and the impressive Shaun Grigg (two), the Tigers were able to respond to the Dons' spirited second-half challenge.

Richmond opened a 23-point lead late in the second term, before the Dons fought back gallantly in a bid to mark Fletcher's milestone with a win.

Sparked by livewire Travis Colyer's (two goals) electric third term, the Dons got within a point at the 19-minute mark but the Tigers did enough with four of the next five goals.

Brendon Goddard, Dyson Heppell and Brent Stanton tried hard for the Dons, while there was no room for sentiment for Fletcher.

The 40-year-old was subbed out early in the final term after gathering 10 touches, on the occasion when he joined Tigers great Kevin Bartlett (403) and Hawthorn's seven-time premiership player Michael Tuck (426) in the illustrious 400 club.

Like his side, Fletcher started quietly but worked his way into the match and the Dons were left lamenting their inaccurate 3.7 opening half, with Jake Carlisle the chief offender.

Carlisle, who came into the match battling flu, looked the most likely avenue to goal all night but his wayward kicking didn't match his vice-like marking.

The big man pulled down nine marks for the match – five contested – but finished with 1.3 and one shot out on the full in front of a massive 83,504 crowd at the MCG.

2015 AFL: Richmond defeats Essendon by 13 points at MCG in Round 9

THIS game had a face only a Richmond fan could love.

To be honest, as far as spectacles go, Dreamtime at the ‘G was more like Nightmare at the ‘G. But by the final siren beauty was in the eye of the beholder — and the Tigers were left holding the four points.

Richmond’s third straight win came by 13 points in front of 83,804 fans, who were engrossed by a four-quarter slog Essendon didn’t surrender until the bitter end.

Two sides who’ve become so good at teasing, did exactly that. There were posters, fluffed entries and mishandling, but it was the Bombers who will rue failed opportunities.

Richmond worked so very hard for this win, but they got a nice little helping hand from its arch enemy.

The Bombers had 1.4 at quarter-time and 3.7 at half-time as players took turns frustrating a restless James Hird on the interchange bench.

Jake Carlisle, who battled gastro in the build-up to this game, finished with 1.3. His poking miss from 20m directly in front half way through the last quarter with the Dons down by 19 summed up Essendon’s night.

Dustin Fletcher, playing a remarkable 400th game, was subbed off early in the last quarter. It just didn’t go to script for the Bombers.

But last night was about Richmond. While Essendon kept missing, the Tigers kept surging. When the Tigers run cold they’re atrocious, but when they run hot, they can be scintillating.

After looking down the barrel after Round 6, the Tigers are playing direct, exciting football based on care and share. The icing on the cake is razor-sharp ball use, which is something we haven’t always been able to say about Damien Hardwick’s side.

They are a momentum side and a confidence side and they’ve got both at the moment. They led by 10 at the first change, 11 at half-time and eight at three quarter-time before keeping Essendon at bay in the last half-hour.

Disposals were even, contested ball was edged by Richmond, tackles were even, clearances were even and only three scoring shots separated the two. It was a remarkably close game split by efficiency in front of goal.

Brandon Ellis ran himself to oblivion in a best on ground performance, collecting 33 possessions. Brett Deledio’s class was critical and Shane Edwards and Dustin Martin split the game open. Trent Cotchin, tagged by Jake Melksham, delivered big plays at big moments.

Suddenly, the Tiger midfield bats deep again. But while the ball movement was electric, the defence was again resolute in the face of enormous pressure.

Alex Rance was impassable at times opposed to Carlisle, Dylan Grimes did nothing wrong and Troy Chaplin brought Joe Daniher back to earth after his heroics a week earlier.

Liam McBean had a presence before being withdrawn and Ben Griffiths contested marking is becoming a permanent feature. It all complements Jack Riewoldt, who went from goalkicker last week to supplier last night, sending the ball inside 50m six times in a selfless performance.

Low on the stats sheets, but not low on effort; Steve Morris’ intensity without the ball was extreme. He forced numerous Essendon mistakes with his pressure and simply chased everything.

His desperation prompted Campbell Brown to sing his praises on Triple M during the third quarter.

“It could be the best three possession game I’ve ever seen,” Brown said.

Essendon are in no man’s land. Last week’s offensive assault against the Brisbane Lions appears a one-off instead of the turning point.

Strangely they lacked spark for much of this game. Jobe Watson and Dyson Heppell weren’t assigned hard tags but struggled to make incisive contributions. Travis Colyer’s run and two goals injected enthusiasm, but the momentum he created couldn’t be maintained.

He kicked a superb running major to the city end among three consecutive Bomber goals to get them within a point in the third quarter.

But their wastefulness got them in the end.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hidden underneath the joint celebrations of Dustin Fletcher's 400th game and the Indigenous contribution to football was a critical game between sides which seemed almost deadlocked in the competition.

Richmond and Essendon stood at 4-4, eighth and ninth on the ladder respectively. The winner would be 5-4 and filled with optimism. The loser would be falling into a difficult spot.

In a game mainly controlled by defence, it was Richmond's greater fluency and edge in forward potency that proved decisive – if an ultimate margin of 13 points can be considered so.

The pattern throughout was one of the Tigers opening up leads and the tenacious Dons clawing back. This happened on three occasions – in the first half, when the Tigers led by nearly four goals, in the third term (17 points) and again in the last quarter, when the Tigers booted two very quick goals, the first within 25 seconds to Shaun Grigg, the next to substitute Corey Ellis.

The Dons closed to within two kicks for the final time, but couldn't find that passage to goal for the next major. Conversion was problematic for the red and blacks in key moments.

The Tigers defended stoutly in the final 10 minutes, when Essendon had Fletcher sitting on the bench with an ice pack and wearing the red vest.

But one had sensed since relatively early that the Tigers were more likely to score and therefore to prevail. Ten goals will not win most games in pristine conditions at the MCG, but it was sufficient here.

For the Tigers, the hard-running and proficient Brandon Ellis was probably the most effective player afield and was recognised as such, though Shane Edwards was nearby and Trent  Cotchin, Dustin Martin  and Brett Deledio made telling contributions, as did key defender Alex Rance. The Dons were well-served, as ever, by Dyson Heppell, Brendan Goddard and the whippet-like speed of Travis Colyer.

But they had slightly less zip and class around the ball, and were more apt to squander in attack.

The Bombers fought back from a deficit of nearly four goals late in the second quarter and again from 17 points in the third term, when they lacked spark and the Tigers seemed very much in command.

The momentum then shifted abruptly, after Tiger cub Conor Menadue hit the post. The Bombers would rebound from the kick-in, enabling Jobe Watson to take a magnificent mark and convert.

Watson, hitherto quiet, became an important influence, as Essendon nailed three consecutive goals and broke their pattern of forward line constipation. The Dons had discovered some run and carry, and were chancing their arm in the corridor.

When Joe Daniher rose to grab a commanding mark and converted, the Dons had whittled the deficit to a point. The Tigers would respond with what was perhaps the most critical goal of the game –  a snap from a stoppage to Kamden McIntosh with little more than a minute left in third quarter.

The Tigers' 23-point advantage late in the second quarter was built on superior ball usage – particularly a willingness to lower their eyes and find targets.

After a period of stasisMartin burst powerfully from a scrimmage to convert from outside 50m – the first goal of the second term having taken nearly 20 minutes. Then Ben Griffiths – Fletcher's initial opponent (he moved on to Liam McBean) – capped off a handball chain that flowed from a superb Steve Morris tackle.

The Bombers, though, responded in timely fashion, as a Bachar Houli fumble allowed Jackson Merrett to burst into the clear and run into an open goal. Right on the siren, Joe Daniher took one of those pack marks that few players can complete. This time, he negotiated the set shot from 40m.

In those final minutes before half-time, Essendon had cut the deficit from a worrisome 23 to a very reachable 11. Richmond's advantage had largely been built on efficiency, since the forward entries were identical (21 each) and the Dons had held sway in the stoppages, where Dyson Heppell, in particular, was important.

The Tigers were both more dangerous on the counter-attack and in their scoring territory. The difference wasn't so much in the air – Carlisle and Daniher were threatening enough – but on the deck. The Tigers had ground ball players in Martin, a resting Cotchin and Edwards; the Dons were less endowed in that department.

Richmond's first-quarter lead was due to superior ball use and accuracy. Both  Costin and Jack Riewoldt converted from angles of around 45 degrees, and Cotchin, who was spending time forward, nailed his second goal from a stoppage with less than 10 seconds left in the term.

Conversely, the Bombers squandered numerous chances and failed to take advantage of the time the ball spent in their attacking half. Carlisle marked well, but was awry in his conversion, while Daniher shanked a shot out on the full.

At the end, the Tigers seemed to have more poise with the ball and, as a result, they have drawn ahead of Essendon. After Dreamtime, they can dream of finals.
